Long Island, Bahamas (1981 – aktuell)

Virgin Steele ist eine 1981 gegründete Power-Metal-Band (europäischer Prägung) aus Long Island. Sie selbst bezeichnen ihren Stil als barbarisch-romantischen Metal („barbaric romanticism“).

Die Musik von Virgin Steele ist gekennzeichnet durch ihre episch-sinfonischen Elemente sowie Anleihen aus der Klassik. Manche Veröffentlichungen der Band sind Konzeptalben und behandeln in erster Linie Themen der Mythologie im Allgemeinen sowie später auch der antiken griechischen und vorderasiatischen Mythologie im Speziellen.

Die frühen Jahre

Die Band wurde Anfang der 1980er Jahre von Jack Starr, einem Gitarristen französischer Herkunft, und Joey Ayvazian (Schlagzeug) gegründet. Zusammen suchten sie einen Sänger, bis sie über eine Zeitungsanzeige auf David DeFeis stießen, welcher auch Bassist Joe O’Reilly mit in die Band brachte.

Ihr Debüt gaben Virgin Steele 1982 mit dem Song Children Of The Storm auf der Compilation U.S. Metal Vol. II. Kurze Zeit später erschien ihr selbstbetiteltes erstes eigenes Album mit dem Titeltrack Children Of The Storm. DeFeis brachte dabei seine Vorliebe für melodische und pompöse Arrangements ein, während Starr die härtere und direktere Art bevorzugte, was zu einer gelungenen Mischung führte. 1983 folgte das Album Guardians Of The Flame. Nach der Mini LP Wait For The Night verließ Jack Starr die Band wegen Meinungsverschiedenheiten mit DeFeis über die Ausrichtung der Band.

    I fucking love love LOVE the fake ending of the song Dominion Day somewhere around the five minute mark! :D Well, actually I love many things in their music, but this time I needed to get that particular thing out of my chest. :) Could very well be the best power metal band ever, yes. At least one of the most unique. I agree with Mr. DeFeis that they are the classical music of today. A fusion. Also really sounds both barbaric and romantic. :P

    I have to say The Black Light Bacchanalia is a grower if any album ever was. I have listened to it in the car recently, and I've only gotten into some of its music, like, yesterday. At first the album seems too long and boring harp, but especially the majestic Nepenthe (I Live Tomorrow) and the overall calm atmosphere in the album like on "In a Dream of Fire" and "To Crown Them With Halos" has manifested itself to me. What first was boring and sleepy is now soothing and beautiful. Virgin Steele never seems to disappoint! Think Necropolis (He Answers Them with Death) might be my favorite song overall, although I wouldn't listen to the album any other way but straight through. Oh and the title song gets so fucking awesome towards the end I'd need to namedrop it if I talked about best parts in Virgin Steele's music (of those I know of, so far). :) Btw, I have 666 VS scrobbles at the moment. D:

    ...Black Light is just an "alright" album for me - which, while acceptable, is still bad considering I'm used to describing VS and their music with the utmost superlatives. Maybe it'll click later on. Dunno why I rambled like this, but I guess I just wanted to post something after a while. VS - still my favourite band.

    Been listening to the Atreus albums all over again lately.. It's hard to say whether I prefer the Marriage albums (that is, parts I and II - not Invictus although technically it's part of the "trilogy") or the Atreus albums.. At the moment I feel like the Atreus albums are their best, because they're so profound and versatile.. They are sort of "mood albums", though, in that they're very heavy to listen to due to the amount of different content, and thus I turn into the more "linear" Marriage albums... Invictus is definitely their most aggressive, though, kind of inbetween with the styles - lots of more doublebass and falsettos, some interludes and added epicness, while still retaining that heavy metal feel of the two previous dics. What's certain is that all the five (!) VS albums 1994-2000 are in the 93%+ or so range, and that's a streak no other band have pulled off in my opinion... Not one, five albums is just...too good. Well, VoE is still great, though.
