My newest article for MetalSucks.net. I write about the controversial genre post-black metal. I contend that the style exists and originates with the Celtic Frost album Into the Pandemonium.

  • I don't get it.

    15. Nov. 2009, 19:33 von Days_of_Prayer

Why the fuck do russians (and to a certain extent ukranians) always put a number of brackets after everything they type? I see it everywhere. For example - I like this band)) . It's been annoying me for months so will someone please tell me why. Thanks.

  • Review: Night Is The New Day

    9. Nov. 2009, 23:12 von Apollyon_

Well well, where do we begin...

The expectation. I've been waiting for this album for at least two years. I'm sure the feeling was mutual for many others. And The Great Cold Distance is by no means an easy act to follow.

The hype. The album was built up, the down-loadable single, SpielenForsaker, the mini-site, the eventual track-listing, Mikael Akerfeltd's comments....

The eventual goods? For my humble opinion, read on.

Night Is the New Day - Tracklist
    1| SpielenForsaker
    2| SpielenThe Longest Year
    3| SpielenIdle Blood
    4| SpielenOnward Into Battle
    5| SpielenLiberation
    6| SpielenThe Promise of Deceit
    7| SpielenNephilim
    8| SpielenNew Night
    9| SpielenInheritance
10| SpielenDay and Then the Shade
    11| SpielenDeparter

    Track One - Forsaker
This was the first hint of what Katatonia had created on this album. Dark, pulsating and lively, this song is like SpielenMy Twin mixed with Dave Lombardo.
As we can expect from Katatonia, it's in one word 'majestic'. Great album opener, fantastic melody, melancholy, and really, what a great song! This song is right up there with other Katatonia album openers - SpielenLeaders, SpielenFor My Demons and so on, and it shows Katatonia are again an evolving, and at this point, rather angry beast. 9.5/10

Track Two - The Longest Year
They don't let us down. The Longest Year keeps up the high standards of the opening track, and again reminds me of a mix of the TGCD style, and a more personal, metallic sound that seems constant throughout the album. The chorus and bridge here are first rate. The lyrics again are of such a high standard. One of the best songs on the album for me. Would highly recommend. 9/10

    Track Three - Idle Blood
I may as well review the Damnation album by Opeth, because this is uncanny. Jonas sounds like his friend Mikael so much here I mistook them! Still, it's a pleasingly slow, melodic song, and it cools the album down after two fast (For Katatonia) and slick sounding songs. It's nice. 8/10

Track Four - Onward Into Battle
I'll start by saying a lot of songs on this album remind me of SpielenUnfurl. This is one of them, mainly because of Jonas's vocal delivery. That slow, saddened, thoughtful almost, voice is amazing. Some quite refreshing guitar riffs are present too. Great song, could well become a favourite. 7/10

    Track Five - Liberation
Another early favourite. Starts with the urban-esque beat found in Unfurl (again) in the background, but soon emerges as one of the heavier tracks on the album. The song breaks into heavy chopping riffs, and a pick up in tempo, but again, recedes. Picks up later, with a real feel of SpielenIncrease and SpielenThe Itch, among other TGCD songs. The lyrics are delivered well, and quickly by Jonas. Solid song. 7.5/10

Track Six - The Promise of Deceit
Interesting intro to the song - Jonas sings in a removed, echo like voice, soon breaking into more melodic singing. The song builds and builds, and as Jonas sings 'When did you come to think...' the song gets heavier. A pleasing chorus follows, and the song calms down somewhat, then builds again after a pause. The lyrics here are direct, and provoking. Despite the dark subject matters, you'll sing along. 7.5/10

    Track Seven - Nephilim
Possibly another early favourite. Nice intro, spellbinding vocals. Katatonia are really in their groove by now, and this is another hopeless, bleak, but amazing song. The chorus is delivered with a slow, crushing drum beat, with Jonas's long, emotive vocals soaring above the music. Interesting guitar as the end of the song nears keeps us in touch. 8/10

    Track Eight - New Night
Very much similar to TGCD era songs here. The rhythmic beat of the drums, and sad, laid back guitar work is a welcome hail-back to songs like SpielenJuly. The song is very finished, with the flourish of a keyboard piece in the background adding to the sound. The song stops and starts, going between building and heavy. With fear of repetition of myself, great lyrics. A song to be deciphered, and that will grow on me. 7.5/10

    Track Nine - Inheritance
Jonas is incredible here. His voice fades in and out of melancholic guitar, a slow beat played in the background by Liljekvist on the drums. The vocals pause for a small symphonic bridge, and the song is slightly faster as it moves on. Another pause, then the vocals rejoin us. A nice guitar riff is to be heard near the end too. A good calming pause as we leave several heavier, dynamic songs behind. 8/10

Track Ten - Day And Then The Shade
Another single in the making. Great melody here, the drums, guitar work and of course the vocals immediately grab our attention, with the tempo change after Inheritance obvious. As the chorus starts, the lyrics of the song 'Every waking hour...' are drilled into our minds. Overall, a fast, polished, very slick sounding song. And another one with very good delivery and lyrics. Great, great song. 9/10

    Track Eleven - Departer
When I first heard it I thought - this is Unfurl part two, more so than ever before on this album. A slow, ambient intro for around 40 seconds leads to thoughtful, sad vocals, complemented nicely by pleasing keyboard work. The song gains momentum, but is all just a stage for Jonas's vocals. The tempo changes again, and as Krister Linder (guest vocals on this song) sings:

    Brother
In your eyes I was the stronger

We realise we are being given such an emotional piece, and journey from this band. A fitting, introspective end to a fascinating album. A really fitting album closer. Perfect. 10/10.

-Remember to try bonus song Ashen -

All in all, this album is similar to The Great Cold Distance, but is not as well rounded, and does not contain the huge singles (July, My Twin...) of TGCD. This is rawer, but polished, and more refined. The album is hopeless, apathetic in places, but still has that unique, uplifting feel to it that, upon inspection, every Katatonia album has. To start with, try Forsaker or Day And Then The Shade. It will grow. Watch this space. This is a potentially huge album.

    Overall, a good initial 88/100

  • Some random musings about the idiots that inhabit last.fm

    14. Okt. 2009, 15:25 von Rooster____

Just wanted to comment really on little things that people do on last,fm.

    (1) People who do any sort of 'How Varied Is My Taste?' - Why do people insist on doing this? What does it really acheive if it shows you listen to six or seven genres? The worst thing about it is that this makes people think they're somehow better then everyone else. Pretentious Indeed.

    (2) Metal Ad - Admitedlly, i myself once had a 'Metal Ad' but now when i look at them they seem so pointless. I mean, what does having the band's you likes logo's just planted there, if you really want to see them, get your CD's out or google it.

    (3) People Who Write Down What They Like - The whole point of last.fm is to show people what you like you morons!!! When you write. 'Bands i love' then give us a long list, does it not occur to you that if i drift my eyes left i can see the fecking bands you like!

    (4) People Who Write 'This Is My Real Top 50' - Your real top 50? You mean to tell me some people tacticlly plan their top 50? It's supposed to be a representation of what you've been listening to, we can check 'last 7 days' or 'last 3 months' if we're really that interested in how your tastes have change

    (5) People Who Write On A Page In Their Own Langauge - What is the point!? If you're from Indonesia, no one can fucking tell what you're saying apart from the 4 other users from Indonesia! You may have a valid point but we can't tell!

    (6) Morons Who Attempt English - Even worse then the person who writes in his own langauge, is the tit who attempts it and looks like nothing but an incoherent ass. For example, the nonsensical fellow TORERO89 wrote this in my shoutbox.

'oh my God !And that do you want to say that it was glem-metal by WASP?ìîãó to take to your taking that did WASP simply get dressed so they thought it is steep but when were they asked by you what under motli Crue mow?hes answered and go you in ass it popsa and we khevi threw!!è text at whiners whining .An on helloween not drive it founders of style!è musicians there such that did not dream no Niki Siksu so to play!! '

    Ahem, What?

    (7) The Boring Fools Who Insist On Dredging Up Old Arguments - Is there anything more dull then when some boring cretin, usually new to last.fm, comes on to a page and makes a comment that people have been arguing about since last.fm's early days. Examples being

    "Megadeth own Metallica

    or

'Bon Scott is much better then Brian Johnson'

BORING. We've heard it all before.

    (8) People Who Get Hyped About Tags and Pictures - Who cares? If you think Job For A Cowboy are Death Metal, what does it matter if other people think it's Deathcore!? All it shows is you're insecure about what genres you like, what you think will perceive you as. And the photo? Does it really affect you that much? Infact, i think there's even a group dedicated to it, sad stuff.

    (9) Random Friend Requests - "Wow we have the same music taste!!! WE MUST GET ALONG! " Er, No. Most of my friends aren't heavy metal fans. I don't care if we have the same artists, i don't wanna converse with some sweaty sad act from some boil on the arse of the world.

    (10) Radiohead Fans - For obvious reasons

    29. Sep. 2009, 14:24 von Mak-Grad

    "There are no unlockable doors
    There are no unwinnable wars
    There are no unrightable wrongs
    Or unsingable songs

    There are no unbeatable odds
    There are no believable gods
    There are no unnameable names,
Shall I say it again, yeah

    There are no impossible dreams
    There are no invisible seams
Each night when day is through
    I don't ask much
    I just want you..."

Venom, Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer...

"The gates slam in your face
    Chill creeps down your spine
No one will let you in
    Your guilty of the crimes
    The judge and jury shout
    Redemption denied - yeah!
    You're going straight to hell

    You hear them calling
    Dark figures start the game
    Then you start falling
    They're calling out your name
    No place in purgatory
You're heading for the flames - hell

    You scream repentance
    Dressed in sackcloth and ash
    But they won't save you
    You're sentenced for the lash
    No time to make amends
Satan starts to laugh - yeah"

    Venom - SpielenStraight To Hell

    "Surgery, with no anesthesia
Fell the knife pierce you intensely
    Inferior, no use to mankind
Strapped down screaming out to die
    Angel of death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead
    Infamous butcher,
    Angel of death"

    Slayer - SpielenAngel of Death

"There's a flame, flame in my heart..."

    "Time, it needs time
To win back your love again..."

Metallica - Wherever I May Roam, Yeah! It's fuckin' great, baby!

  • 101 rules of NWOBHM

    28. Sep. 2009, 19:32 von settlehead

    Found this here:
    http://www.metalstorm.ee/pub/fun_comments.php?fun_id=58

101 rules of NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal)

    1. The more obscure the better
    2. Hearing Metallica's cover of "Am I Evil?" does not make you a NWOBHM fan
    3. Without Diamond Head, there would be no Metallica
    4. Without NWOBHM, there would be no Thrash
    5. Constantly complain that Thrash "killed off" NWOBHM; while secretly liking Thrash
    6. When someone asks you what NWOBHM stands for, tell them something like "the best genre of music, ever." Make sure they still don't understand what it means.
    7. Iron Maiden after "Killers" is not NWOBHM
    8. Complain that Iron Maiden "stole" Bruce Dickinson from Samson, while praising him for his work in IM
    9. Dress like you're from the 80s, this includes long unkempt hair, ripped jeans, ripped denim jackets with obscure band patches and an even more obscure band t-shirt
    10. Pagan Altar are gods amongst men, this is unarguable
11.Def Leppard really really suck! (Apart from their debut)
    12. When forming your own NWOBHM "tribute" band, record your album in the key of A
    13. In fact, record your whole career in A
    14. Make sure at least one song has the main riff lifted from "Spielen2 Minutes to Midnight"
    15. Which was CLEARLY a rip-off from "SpielenWelcome To Hell" by Venom anyway
    16. Ballads must have a clean picked intro, a crushing middle section, followed by a fast outro
    17. Only write songs about sex, drugs and rock n roll...
    18. And the Devil
    19. Never down tune your guitars, ever (unless you're Venom)
    20. You're not Venom and never will be
    21. Bad production values are a MUST, if it's highly produced, it's not NWOBHM
    22. Spend exactly £5.35 on producing your album
    23. Did I mention the more obscure, the better?
    24. Constantly complain that band X "should've made it big"
    25. Complain about bands making it big and going commercial
    26. Kevin Heyborne is a living legend, even if he can't keep a stable Angel Witch line-up for more than 5 seconds
    27. Two words: Witchfinder General
    28. Track down every demo, EP and single of your favourite NWOBHM band; go as far as contacting a former member and conducting an interview with him.
    30. Start up a Neo-NWOBHM band...
    31. But realize your only fans will probably be in Germany and/or Sweden...
    32. And you can't afford to move there...
    33. Nor would you want to because then you wouldn't be NWOBHM
    34. Major record companies are evil; they killed off every NWOBHM act
    35. Only sign with small independent record companies...
    36. Or Neat
    37. Brian Ross is your idol
    38. Anything past 1986 isn't real metal....
    39. Unless it's a NWOBHM reunion
    40. Deliberately spell your band name wrong: substitute vowels for consonants (mainly y's) e.g. Tygers of Pan Tang, Tytan, Phyne Thanquz, etc
    41. Name your band something completely irrelevant to the subject matter you sing about, e.g. Satan
    42. Worship Diamond Head, daily, if necessary
    43. Talk to mainstream metal fans about your favorite obscure NWOBHM act and tell them they're better than anyone they say (which is right, right?)
    44. NWOBHM is the only genre that bad songwriting is acceptable
    45. When recording your "live" album (keep in mind rule 21 and 22), dub in a few of your mates drunkenly shouting after every song has finished
    46. Constantly remind people that Garage Inc. is far inferior to the original songs (especially the Diamond Head and Blitzkrieg covers)
    47. Release your demo as a sleeveless 7" only make 500 copies; that way it'll be obscure enough to be classified as NWOBHM
    48. Go to every NWOBHM reunion concert ever, even if they are held only in Germany and/or Sweden
    49. High pitched vocals are a must. This is non-negotiable, unless you're Venom(see rule 20)
    50. Keyboards are optional, keyboard solos however, are not
    51. Never keep the same line-up for more than one single/demo/EP. Fire someone if you have to...
    52. It'll probably be the drummer anyway
    53. Motörhead and Judas Priestare not NWOBHM...
    54. But they're pretty kickass nonetheless
    55. To put your band in good light, tell people you used to perform at the Soundhouse, even if you weren't born in the 60s/70s...
    56. They'd probably never find out anyway
    57. NEVER under any circumstances give up on your quest for obscurity, no matter how far you dig, there will ALWAYS be a more obscure band out there (see rule 1)
    58. Scorn Metallica for stealing Diamond Head's glory...
    59. Even though they played together on at least one occasion
    60. Lars Ulrich is an ass
    61. Barry "Thuderstick" Graham isn't
    62. Track down all of Bruce Dickinson's early recordings with Speed, Xero etc...
    63. Even though they are pretty average at best
    64. In NWOBHM, women are acceptable band members unlike that homo-erotic Thrash malarkey....
    65. Keeping in mind rule 12, record a really heavy and fast song in the key of E...
    66. Make it a B-side of a lightweight melodic rock song recorded in A...
    67. The A-side is intended to get "recognized"
    68. Getting recognized and becoming mainstream is not NWOBHM
    69. Urchin are not NWOBHM but Dave Murray and Adrian Smith played in them so it's okay
    70. There's much more to Holocaust than just "The Small Hours" but their version was better than Metallica's
    71. Their version of "Master of Puppets" is also better than Metallica's
    72. Bass MUST be audible, but keep in mind rules 21 and 22
    73. Twin guitars are a must, this is essential...
    74. Unless you're Venom (see rule 20)
    75. Record a load of demos, stuff them in a box, break the band up and wait 20 years until "finding" them again, release them as "The Complete Anthology"
    76. Instead of recommending the more known NWOBHM bands to interested friends, show them your collection of obscure 7" singles and demo tapes, tell them "you can look but not touch"...
    77. No, you haven't listened to them either.
    78. The NWOBHM Encyclopaedia by Malc McMillan is your bible...
    79. You have it by your bedside table and read it every night
    80. Owning a few Iron Maiden albums does not make you NWOBHM...
    81. Even if they are Iron Maiden and Killers
    82. Track down your favorite NWOBHM bands elusive out of print "second album"
    83. Realize it's crap, but keep in anyway because you just shelled out 100quid for it on eBay
    84. Following rule 83, debut albums are ALWAYS a NWOBHM band's best work, this is unarguable
    85. You thought I was going to say "unless you're Venom" didn't you?
    86. Venom's debut IS their best work, period
    87. And possibly the worst produced album, ever
    88. Re-release all your albums "remastered" with all your demos and EPs tacked on the end
    89. Your debut album must be raw and frantic; your sophomore album must be either hair metal or AOR
    90. Your album and/or single cover must be a black and white sketch done by your mate who does art in college (part time, of course) of either your band, the Grim Reaper, skulls, or some valiant warrior on horseback
    91. Don't sing about the Grim Reaper, skulls, or some valiant warrior on horseback
    92. Following rules 65 and 66, record a cheesy ballad with synthesizers, make it 9 minutes long and release the lot as an EP
    93. Paul Di'Anno is still cool even if he was fired from Iron Maiden and done precisely nothing since then
    94. To preserve your legacy, DON'T record an album, just singles, demos and EP's, this will ensure your place in the NWOBHM hall of fame...
    95. After that see rule 75
    96. Record all your material in your front room or garage
    97. Paradoxically, foreign members are allowed in NWOBHM bands, hell, even full foreign bands can be classified as NWOBHM as long as they played at least one gig in London during the 80s
    98. Progressive elements ARE allowed in NWOBHM, unlike that boring Thrash malarkey...
    99. Thrash is actually really really cool, even if it is American
    100. Remember kids, the more obscure the band, the better they are!
    101. Don't take this list too seriously
