One of VdGG's finest moments! According to PH, Bob Calvert told him that Killer was THE track that made him really want to write songs (not just poems, stories etc.). This track, and most of H to He, strike me as being the first really mature VdGG work. I love White Hammer,Darkness, etc.--but the band really fires on all cylanders on this album. The lyrics also mark a change from Hammill’s earlier preoccupation with magic, Nordic mythology, and the paranormal (e.g.Necromancer, Boat of a Million Years, White Hammer and some early songs that made it on to Fools Mate in '71). On H to He, Hammill starts to address issues like morality and human nature (Killer), warfare and politics (The Emperor), alienation (House), science and technology (Pioneers) in a secular, sci-fi tinged context. Potter, for better or worse, leaves during recording, and the "classic line-up" is first heard on Pioneers. Back to this track: Killer is one of the most powerful and affecting songs in rock music, imo.

Bob, I wouldn't say it was for the whole of the '70; I remember a few times when the encore shouts for killer would precede the encore and then start again afterwards until the house lights went on - but that was '74/'75. I don't remember it being anything like as prevalent by '78.

Progressive rock classic, for a good reason.

I wonder why it is that every time I saw Vand der Graaf back in the 70's there were always European studenty-types who would continually shout for "Keeler" even though they hadn't played it for ages and they clearly weren't going to. Great track and all that, but you have to let a band move on

There is more to this song than 20 years of pop music. 9 Minutes of excellence

Went to the opening of what billed itself as a rock bar across the road from me, only to find that only half of the jukebox could even remotely be described as rock, the rest was pop/soul, the place was full of trendies and the owner had put a bunch of songs on the jukebox so my selections were taking an age to get played. However, one of the few truly interesting songs that had managed to sneak onto the jukebox in a compilation was this one - so I put it on as many times as I could afford with the small change I had in my wallet. After that, I cleared off, because I knew I would have to stay for hours in order to hear it, but I would've loved to see the faces of the staff and the trendies when they realised what was going on ...

great track, although I think they got tired of playing it at one point. Many memories of hearing shouts of 'Keee-laah' at various dates on the Godbluff/Still life era tours, which if it drew any response at all from Peter it was usually disdain.
