There's a certain quality of the The Jesus and Mary Chain sound (especially Taste the Floor) that I find hypnotically beautiful. It's like when you have a cold and a little bit of fever. When you are not totally uncomfortably ill, but just enough to stay in bed and have weird dreams. Feeling drowsy and groggy with your head being pleasantly heavy and pulsating. Nice, but slightly disturbing feeling.

Taste the Floor is the perfect example for that. The song that started it all, actually.
The wall of noise combined with a surge of energy of the right measure, and all wrapped in a melody. The feeling of being slightly ill is produced by the super pleasant vibrating pressure on my eardrums. Including the perfect combination of buzz and fuzz, with a little bit of feedback, modulated voice and all melted in a solid and slightly fluid and vibrating wall coming at me. And when it gets to me it turns into thick vibrating membrane that encloses me like placenta.

Since Psychocandy I've been looking for that quality.

For those who don’t know, Craig Murphy is a British composer of ambient electronica and IDM, as well as the founder of Herb Recordings and Ambidextrous Records. He records under two different projects, Weird Fields and Solipsism, and is also a member of the experimental folk band Shoosh. While preparing to release his next album, Craig was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to fill us in on his roles as a composer and record label operator.
