This is my favorite non-album song of hers. I'll always remember the show in Duluth, MN where she played it. The guy I was sitting next to (a complete stranger) cried through the whole thing. So did I.

I used to skip Merman on its first notes. Now I'm regreting having done this for my entire life, this song is pure beauty. It's become one my favorites. Poetry and sensibility condensed into a song.

liquiddatura is right. The song existed before the tragic death of Matthew Shepard. Tori only dedicated Merman to him later.

It's not about Matthew Shepard, but she sings it in his honor. It was written before his death.

he's a merman/eternally/doesn't need something you're not willing to give... strange thoughts passing from my mind, why he doesn't need it? mermans and mermaids has no sexual organs... so she will be safe with him. who could ever say you're not simply wonderful/who could ever harm you... a lullaby indeed.

I got it off A Piano, and I read on Wikipedia that it is either about or dedicated to Matthew Shepard. Erase hate.

She dedicated it to Matthew Shepard (Google his name, and 'The Laramie Project) during several of her tours. The song was never released on a CD.
