Biografie

The Redskins ist eine britische Polit-Soul-Band der 80er Jahre. Die Band bestand aus Chris Dean (Gesang/Gitarre), unter dem Namen X-Moore war er noch als Schreiber für den NME tätig; Nick King (Schlagzeug) und Martin Hewes (Bass/Gesang).

Alle drei Bandmitglieder waren linke Skinheads, wobei Chris Dean und Martin Hewes Mitglieder der trotzkistischen Socialist Workers Party um Tony Cliff waren. Die Vorläufer-Band der Redskins waren die No Swastikas (Keine Hakenkreuze). Gegründet wurden die Redskins 1982, ihre erste Single kam im Juli 1982 heraus und hieß Lev Bronstein (Geburtsname von Leo Trotzki). Danach folgten noch viele andere Singles, Samplerbeiträge und die LP Neither Washington Nor Moscow.

Waren die ersten Werke der Redskins noch vom Oi!-Punk gekennzeichnet, so wurde mit dem Dazukommen der Bläser-Sektion (bestehend aus Kevin Robinson (Trompete), Trevor Edwards (Posaune) und Ray Carless (Tenorsaxophon) aus den Redskins eine der besten britischen Northern Soul-Combos der 80er Jahre. Ihre dritte Single Keep On Keeping On (diese war die erste für das DECCA-Label) war eine Unterstützersingle für die streikenden Bergarbeiter.

Neben der Unterstützung für die streikenden Bergarbeiter waren sie noch aktiv in der Anti-Apartheid-Bewegung und in der Red Wedge-Bewegung, die den Sturz Maggie Thatchers zum Ziel hatte.

    @ashdinosaur - Anti-fascist skinheads have existed for years (in fact since the beginning of the skins subculture). Also, the term 'red' refers to a socialist, left wing political ideology.

    I saw them as a teenager, when they were playing a GLC/Victoria Gardens(?) event. I remember the crowd parting and a phalanx of right-wing skinheads came through the crowd, got on stage and proceeded to fight with the band. My main memory however is that as the crowd parted, my sister stood still because she had the coats of at least ten people (who were moshing at the front) with her, so they had to march round her, as she wasn't going to move!

    I also think I have a better understanding now of the political climate that helped create the skinhead movement. And why so many Boneheads became Redskins and why certain socialists defected to Nationalism. Fascists, Socialists and Anarchists constantly walk a line of political extremes that political moderates don't. And it's easy to fall off of one wall to the other especially when one is constantly open minded and facing alienation.

    That being said, I'm glad I released my Christian Leftism stance years ago. And became the Pagan I always wanted to be. That which I was always so in my heart. And opened my mind to Traditionalist, Tribalist, and Folk Pagan culture and Green Anarcho Heathenry and more AntiChristian viewpoints. Clearly I see the problems of Political Correctness plaguing the left. That being said, before I experimented with all this and opened my mind, I would have surely been more accepted within the Socialist Communities outside of last.fm, because now all I look like to them is a some kind of "fascist", racist Primmie, when I'm a Libertarian Left and that is clearly not the case. And I've grown a great appreciation for the Leftist Green Community here on last.fm who listens to Neofolk and Black Metal and it's afraid to offend people. I look back upon who I was years ago, and I see foolishness.
