Haunting and, ultimately, inspiring. This is a sort of radio play in which the Mekons stand defend their homeland against American invaders. But the battle here goes beyond the geopolitical to the aesthetic: it's as if we Americans have come to reclaim country music from English dabblers who foolishly believe they can have its rustic authenticity without its reactionary politics. (And we Americans drive this point home in our characteristic way--by dropping some bombs.) The Mekons describe hopeless battles and existence in a bombed-out wasteland; an American hayseed blathers in euphemistic military jargon. The music fills in the images: thumping drums are bombs exploding, female backing vocals are cries of grief, occasional electric guitar is a bomber overhead, etc. It seems as hopeless as any other situation on this album--and yet it ends with a call to overthrow despots and reclaim freedom. No one's gonna stop them from appropriating Americana if they damn well feel like it.
