From the opener of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots: "I don't know where the sunbeams end and the starlights begin, it's all a mystery; and I don't know how a man decides what's right for his own life, it's all a mystery..." From the opener of this: "YEAHYEAHYEAHYEAHYEAHYEAHYEAHYEAHYEAH"

TLDR; listen to this entire album while smoking weed

it's like anything before this album never happened, or at least existed in an alternate form. a completely new and fresh take on an already fantastic group. some of it reminds me of the meandering complexity of soft bulletin yet in a more concentrated way, almost polar is a sense. The thick, full parts engage you in full force and are offset in just the right way by the more reserved songs, changing between the two at just the right time and occasionally within he same song; its certainly an album meant to be heard in it's entirety. anyway, fuck shit up and get laid.

it's sad, cause the good songs on here are really good, but the bad songs are so bad. even including the first 3 albums, this is their worst release

it master-slaves me.... the genius is incomprehensible: one day people will set this album beside bitches brew, sticky fingers, wish you were here, and revolver, is a truly great masterpiece

I'm not acting like they don't exist. I just don't think it would be fair for me to pass judgement on those albums, as I haven't listened to them very much (yet). The point is, the Flaming Lips have been an extremely consistent band since Priest, imo, and this is the only seriously flawed album they've released since then. And there's plenty of justification out there. v Chumsicles just summed it up nicely. By the way, you're not giving much justification as to why it's NOT the worst. (Don't get me wrong, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.)

  • Chumsicles

well it has some really great songs on it, but it's very patchy with half of the album consisting of either really bad songs (It Overtakes Me, Free Radicals) or songs that could've been good ruined by stupid arrangements (Yeah Yeah Yeah Song, The Wizard Turns On)

    Mai 2013
  • naotas_forehead

Everything they have made starting with In a Priest Driven Ambulance is pure gold. So yeah, this is easily the worst of the bunch, in my opinion. To be fair, it's ruined by only a few mediocre songs and one REALLY bad song. The rest is excellent.

It's really weird how the worst Lips album (this one) has the best cover art, and the best Lips album (Clouds) has the worst cover art.

I wonder what Wayne thinks of this album in the wake of everything that's come after....

Everyone hates Yeah Yeah Yeah Song? Jesus, that's the only thing besides Cosmic Autumn Rebellion that I find memorable about this record. It's hard for me to get into it too much and although songs like Pompeii and the W.A.N.D. sound pretty good live, I never find myself ever wanting to listen to this one too much. Especially considering what's come before and after it, At War With the Mystics is an easily forgettable record.

It's like they just lost all of what makes them so special during the writing of this album. It's not a bad album by any means but it's so boringly and un-exceedingly average that I just really don't want to listen to it all that much.

I liked a lot of these songs, but I thought that the "Yeah Yeah Yeah song" was annoying. The Sound of Failure, My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion, and Vein of Stars were the best ones I thought. I like Haven't Got a Clue, as well. I still haven't listened to all of their albums, I have so much catching up to do.

Goin On would be a nice relaxed b-side but it makes Mystics go out with a whimper. look at Transmissions or Clouds or Embryonic for how Pompeii would be a great closer. maybe let it fade out for 30 seconds if it's too abrupt.

Maybe they shouldn't have put the most ridiculously annoying song first. I almost had to stop the album right there, but I'm glad I didn't.

Dunno......sort of reminds me of Abbey Road-era Beatles - very melodic, soaring dream-pop song with a touch of psychedelia. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Goin' On just does not fit on the end. One of the weakest tracks on here, straight after one of the best and most epic... Pompeii would be a perfect closer.

  • surfingelectrod

How can people say that this is underrated when it's one of their most popular and commercially successful albums? I think it's a mess. The b-sides are better than some of the album tracks and everything is just too overproduced... there's too much shit crammed into every song, and the dumb pop songs are some of the Lips' worst. The spacey prog stuff is good, though.
