Onverwacht ging ik dit jaar toch weer naar Summer Darkness. Met zo'n facilitair betekent dit festival in de Utrechtse altijd: ergens in de stad eten vinden, heel veel op en neer fietsen (of erger: wandelen) tussen de verschillende podia en zorgen dat je een slaapplek hebt in de buurt of met de laatste of eerste trein terug komen.

Op vrijdag koos ik voor de eerste trein naar Rotterdam, zo'n keuze waar geen weg bij terug is. De sfeer zat er gewoon nog niet in bij mij en kwam ook niet op gang toen het met de gastenlijst dit jaar wéér niet goed ging. Het optreden van The Crüxshadows was appetijtelijk, dat van Covenant haalde het niet bij de (/mijn) vorige keer op Amphi Festival in 2008 omdat het podium toch te klein was. Het licht daarentegen was een stuk beter. Eerlijk gezegd heb ik vooral tijd besteed aan het kletsen met mensen, vooral zij die het geluid een rommeltje vonden. Ik kon ze geen ongelijk geven en ongemerkt heb ik de volgende twee dagen mee gedaan aan het oud kritisch mannetje spelen. Nadat de laatste trein ongemerkt was vertrokken, verlieten ook bijna alle gezellige mensen het feest. Wat bleef waren vooral studenten en twee mensen die ik sowieso niet hoefde te zien.

Zaterdag heb ik bijna de hele dag opgetrokken met mijn vriend de lichtman, af en toe het licht aan een kritisch oog onderworpen maar vooral lol gehad. Dat begon met de gewoon sterke optredens van KLOQ en Absolute Body Control. "Nothing fancy", gewoon echte synthpop-artiesten met echte gitaren en goede zang.

Het optreden van Brighter Death Now had de dynamiek op het podium van een kweekproefje terwijl de backing af en toe haperde. Het zaklampje dat de heren hadden om de kabels te controleren mocht niet baten. Hoe anders was het optreden van Eisbrecher, een Rammstein zonder schmink en iets meer gitaren. Het licht was goed, de zanger (tevens een Duitse tv-host, vertelde een erg leuke Duitse fan) een geweldige performer en een gitarist kwam bijna overtuigend over toen hij ging doen alsof hij de synth speelde. Rotersand was prachtig om even te zien: hoewel de zanger een beetje houterig over komt, was hij geweldig energiek. Hij sleepte de zaal mee in het gestamp tot hij zelf het publiek in sprong en daar een flinke tijd zijn act doorzette. Tussendoor was Sieben net als vorig jaar een leuke eenmansshow op het Domplein: erg jammer dat ik hem niet in de kerk heb zien optreden.

Hoewel: het zondagse optreden van Floor Jansen & the Red limo string quartet in de kerkzaal van het Nationaal Museum van Speeldoos tot Pirement was teleurstellend. Niet om haar prachtige stem en goed spelende drie violisten en een chellist maar om de akoestiek. Ik had gewaarschuwd dat ik daar over zou klagen, toch? Nou, de chello drong via de versterking en de reflectie van de prachtige zaal terug de microfoon in, een galm die oordopjes nodig maakte en de stem van Floor Jansen geen recht deed. Nou zou ik zelfs kunnen zeuren dat, anders dan bij de metal van After Forever, hier de plofjes in de microfoon toch best hard waren. Het nummer dat ze opdroeg aan, en voor het laatst zong op de begrafenis van, haar opa was ontroerend maar het ensemble kwam het best tot zijn recht in de versie van Heart's Alone.

Waar ik zondag echt van genoot was het optreden van Modulate. Hun bekende nummers (Bass Alert, Skullfuck en Hard and Dirty) mogen dan wel vrij normale harde EBM zijn: de rest van de show was vernieuwend genoeg, zoals met hun cover van The Prodigy of hun remix van Faderhead! Bij Noisuf-X gingen de voeten van alle cybers keurig als het hoort tegelijk van de vloer, Modulate was toch misschien zo vernieuwend dat niet iedereen wist welke dansstijl aan te houden. Ik sprong in ieder geval bij sommige nummers om het hardst, tot ik drijfnat na een uur de zaal verliet. Op deze plek wil ik Adidas graag bedanken voor de Action 3 pro level deo waardoor ik niet eens stonk. Terug naar de lof voor Modulate: de drie heren wisten mij wijs te maken dat het live was en dat ze genoten van het uit hun bol gaan. Vanachter hun instrumenten wisten zij genoeg contact te maken met het publiek en waren stukken dynamischer dan Noisuf-X, waar ik het gevoel kreeg dat ze het zelf ook niet meer leuk vonden om te doen alsof ze aan knopjes draaien respectievelijk op een drumpad trommelen.

Korpiklaani was wel aardig, maar niet leuk genoeg van achterin de zaal om de hitte vol te houden. Net zo min als de muziek van Celts without Frontiers op kon tegen de geschreeuwde danspasinstructies. Dat was niet aan mij besteed: ik wou begeisterung zoals vorig jaar met Faun unplugged. Aan Front 242 en Suicide Commando heb ik niets meer op te merken, of het moet het knappe videobandje zijn dat Suicide Commando afspeelde.

Het leek dit jaar wat rustig te zijn op Summer Darkness, toch vond ik er nog genoeg te zien en te praten. zo veel zelfs, dat ik een boel bands heb gemist, in aflopende volgorde:
