mccartney's "blackbird," "rocky raccoon," and "i will" vs. lennon's "julia" and "dear prudence"...it's close, but paul takes it

You think this one's the most fun? Interesting. I've always thought it was one of the few Beatles releases to really flirt with darkness. I may be allowing the Manson stuff to affect my perception of the album, but I think either Please Please Me or A Hard Day's Night is far and away the most fun Beatles material.

Are we neglecting to mention that the song "Helter Skelter" in and of itself was supposed to be one of the 'fun' songs? Before Manson came up with his own twisted, drug-addled vision, Paul had written it about a water slide. Talk about double meanings there.

True, yes, that was the way it was written. It's undeniable that Manson's co-opting of the record and his reading into it the basis for his race war ("Helter Skelter") has colored the perception of it in the decades since the activities of his Family. I think there's an inherent darkness to some of the songs here, though-- more so than most other Beatles records. "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and "Glass Onion" have a degree of cynicism and darkness that is fairly unusual for Beatles songs, for example, and "Revolution," "Yer Blues" (this one may be seen as a pastiche/parody of Blues cliches-- up for debate) and a few other songs have darker aspects to them as well. I guess the takeaway is that even with a group like The Beatles that espoused beliefs like "all you need is love," nothing is ever 100% happy/cheerful. But I would pick this one as one of their darker sounding efforts, even removed from the Manson element, or at least trying to remove it.

Plus there's the fact that the antipathy and personal struggles that were engulfing the band at the time have cast something of a shadow over the record, too. It's hard to separate the extra-musical factors from the music itself when so much of the extra-musical stuff has so thoroughly pervaded pop culture.

Such an amazing album. Not my favorite Beatles album (that would be Revolver) or their best (a lot of debate there, but I would give Abbey Road that title), but definitely an enjoyable listen from start to finish. It is so eclectic, so diverse, it must have really blown some minds in 1968. As far as double albums go, I don't know if it's the greatest of all-time, but it's definitely in the top five, maybe top three.

Confusing and astonishing. Beauty through chaos. It is indeed a flawed record, but its flaws make it a very concise, entertaining and intriguing listen. Best Beatles record. [2]

If you like every song on an album to sound the same, then this album is not for you. If you like every song on an album to stand alone, without referring to other songs ("we all know Honey Pie"), then this album is not for you. For me, the three greatest parts of this album are (1) the second line of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (I look at the floor...) - this was BEFORE Python; (2) the dialog after the unlisted song "Can You Take Me Back Where I Came From," and (3) the transition from the futuristic/bizarre "You become naked / Hold that line / Block that kick" to the second most traditional song on the album, "Good Night" (muffed verse and all).

Perfect for a desert island, since it's six disks in one (Beatle Paul, Weird Paul, Beatle John, Really Weird John, George Outstanding, and Ringo).

I refuse to put this anywhere a "best album of all time" spot for Revolution 9 alone. But it's a pretty great contender nonetheless.

I'm not a Beatles fan at all, but this album might be a masterpiece. I've been enjoying it quite a lot lately.

My dad is a Beatles-fan so I grew up with their music, but when I started to explore their music for myself this was new to me. My dad never played this album....I don't know/understand why. This is one of my favorite Beatles albums.

My favourite Beatles album, because it has While My Guitar..., Blackbird, and, above all, Rocky Raccoon, on it.
