The Smashing Pumpkins ist eine seit den 90er Jahren einflussreiche Alternative-Rock-Band aus Chicago.
Geführt von Sänger und Hauptsongwriter Billy Corgan (Gitarre, Gesang), brachten sie während ihrer ersten Schaffensperiode von 1987 bis 2000 sechs Alben und zwei B-Seiten-Sammlungen und seit ihrer Reunion 2006 ein weiteres Album auf den Markt. Das Line-Up entspricht dem einer typischen Rockband: zwei Gitarren (Billy Corgan, James Iha, ab 2006 Jeff Schroeder), Bass (D’Arcy Wretzky, ab 1999 Melissa Auf Der Maur, ab 2006 Ginger Reyes) und Schlagzeug (Jimmy Chamberlin). Die Smashing Pumpkins haben weltweit über 30 Millionen Alben verkauft.
Stil
1987 wurde die Band von Billy Corgan und James Iha gegründet. Zunächst spielten sie ohne Bass in Begleitung einer Drummachine, bei einigen Songs anfangs mit der Unterstützung des Schlagzeugers von Billys vorheriger Band „the marked“, Ron Roesing. Nach einem Konzert lernte Corgan bei einem Streitgespräch D’Arcy Wretzky kennen, kurz darauf war sie festes Mitglied der Band. Wenig später folgte der Schlagzeuger Jimmy Chamberlin.
Die Klangfarbe der Smashing Pumpkins ist geprägt von einer melancholischen, hochmelodiösen Mischung aus stürmischem massiven Gitarrenrock und psychedelischen, leichten, transzendenten Klängen, sowie Billy Corgans außergewöhnlichen, nasalen Stimme. Grundsätzlich steht bei den Smashing Pumpkins nicht nur die technische Fähigkeit am Instrument im Vordergrund, sondern vor allem der Song als Ganzes. Typisch dafür sind epische Lieder der Band wie etwa „Silverfuck“, „Porcelina of the Vast Oceans“, „Window Paine“, „Starla“, „Glass and the Ghost Children“ und „Thru the Eyes of Ruby“.

To me, Siamese Dream is not only their best album, but it's probably my favorite album of all time. Bought it in 5th grade and it's still listened to regularly. Every song is a 10.

Zeitgeist is a perfectly solid and acceptable hard rock/alternative album, albeit one that's a little one-dimensional. Machina is a great overblown semi-concept album to which people never gave enough of a chance on release, and its reputation continues to suffer, unfairly. IMO the worst Pumpkins album is Teargarden. It often sounds uninspired, and Billy kind of admitted to as much in a recent interview (he also said Oceania is getting universally positive reception to people who have heard it). It's still not bad or anything though, and there are some great songs like Freak and A Stitch in Time.

I like no matter what the Pumpkins do. IMO Billy's making the new SP sound completely different from the old one. That's a good thing, since the same sound over a long period of time is really boring.
