Sun City Girls

The Sun City Girls were a United States experimental rock band formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1982. The members were Alan Bishop (bass guitar, vocals), his brother Richard Bishop (guitar, piano), and the late Charles Gocher (drums). Their name was inspired by Sun City, Arizona, an Arizona retirement community.

They found little mainstream success (and never really sought any), but they continue to inspire a devoted cult following and have recorded numerous critically acclaimed albums, released in small editions by labels like Placebo, Majora, Eclipse Records, Amarillo Records, and their own Abduction imprint. Critic Steve Leggett writes, „Throughout its history SCG has remained a challenging, unpredictable, and eclectic musical unit, operating outside the commercially driven aspirations of the mainstream recording industry, and the group has become somewhat of a beacon to independent musicians and artists everywhere.“[1] Writing in the Village Voice, Ted Hendrickson argues, „They’ve never made any sense, conventionally speaking, and that’s what makes them fun.“[2]

Originating from the Arizona punk rock scene which included Meat Puppets, JFA and the The Feederz, Sun City Girls quickly began to incorporate lengthy improvisations, beat poetry, surf music, jazz, tape music, and elements of South Asian, South American, Middle Eastern and African musics. SCG performances were often wildly unpredictable, sometimes verging on performance art, with elaborate costumes, kabuki-inspired makeup, and the creation of a festive, ritualistic atmospshere with audience participation. The group’s interest in mysticism, paranormal topics (especially UFOs), religious cults and other esoterica is often manifested in their song titles, lyrics and album art.

as Mark Prindle says about them "for some reason they feel that every single note that they've ever played deserves to be released - which makes for some incredibly annoying lo-fi live recordings of the band just dicking around on stage." but when they're on , their music is otherworldly & wonderful

Listen to Horse Cock Phepner and then Torch of the Mystics and then Funeral Mariachi and you will change your mind. If you only had to listen to one more song, though, make it Radar 1941. It was like they made that song to say to people, "Hey look! We DO know how to play our instruments amazingly well. We just don't want to, so fuck off if you don't like it."

i've only listened to crossdressers and the only song that was actually really good on it (i'd have to listen to it again to remember what the track is). tbh they are talented for what they do, i just don't like experimental rock all that much outside of Chrome. my comment wus probably outta line but i was in a bad mood that day lel

Chamakay, I understand you not liking their improv and highly experimental pieces, but if you listen to tracks like 'Different Kind Of Whore', 'Radio Morocco', Rookoobay', 'Cruel & Thin', 'Blue Mambo', Kickin' The Dragon and 'Nites Of Malta' etc. you might realize that the girls were genuinely talented and didn't always create the highly experimental and hard to listen to pieces you may have been exposed to.

The Bishops really need to reissue this stuff. I'd love to have physical copies of SSG albums without having to pay $85 and up for one album. I get they don't want to live in the past and all, but their past was brilliant.
