I cut off my testicles to get spiritually closer to Steven Wilson. Following advice from Mr. Geffen (the singing goat from blackfield).

The new Steven Wilson album is quite cool! I think it's a step up from the Raven, which was more of a retro 70s album with a strong Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull and King Crimson vibe. This one has a lot more of the poppier era Porcupine Tree channeled into the music, which is something that I really enjoyed in the previous eras. Of course, nothing will compare to the giants of the 1970s..., but here we have a very enjoyable album!

Yeah Dowsing is their most progressive album (but really tough to get into) and Hubardo is also one of their best albums (but again more on the black metal side of things, with very notable exceptions). Choirs is imo the best introduction album. But anyway I will shut up about KD, after all we should all be talking about HCE lol.

Happy Returns is sooo good... it hit me hard on the first listen. Heard it before on Steven Wilson's 2013 tour and it was the best song on the setlist, waited so long for a studio version... Routine is a hell of a track too, my second favourite and Steven's pinnacle achievement. Ancestral is meh (though everyone else seems to like it), Home Invasion/Regret #9 is a killer track, but nothing groundbreaking, 3 Years Older is really good, sounds like something off Raven That Refused To Sing, but more refined. Shorter tracks are all really good, but the overall flow of the album could be better. Steven is at his best right now IMO.

@Kitten-of-love this is the worst track off that album, but it's still quite good. Those drum patterns definitely aren't random, and truck horns are shitty because this album was recorded live due to low budget. However their next album, Hubardo, recorded without budget limitations, sounds perfectly clear and crisp. And I believe that right now Hubardo (2013) is said to be their best album, though it's less innovational and more conventional than CotE, and their most original album would be Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tounge (just bought that beauty on CD <3). And about HCE - when I first heard it I believed that it was Steven's biggest masterpiece to date, but after just few days I'm getting tired of it... anyway, it will sound awesome live, I can feel it

I wasn't expecting to turn this into a Kayo Dot shoutbox but whatever I will go with that. The song below is more avent-black metal. I was more having the Choirs of the Eye album (particularly The Manifold Curiosity) in mind when I talked about very progressive rock/metal, which is widely seen as their best album.

vv If your definition of 'pushing the boundaries of music' is putting shitty truck horn sounds and didgeridoos over random out-of-time drum patterns and a washing machine, then I agree with you.

But Anthony Fantano doesn't really like Kayo Dot. And they're not weird in any way, wtf. motW was really progressive at their times, Kayo Dot right now are pushing boundaries too, especially with their less appreciated and known stuff, like Coyote or Gamma Knife. +OPN is now making completely new, unheard stuff.

"Kayo Dot (or anything from Toby Driver) is a great example of a band that pushes the boundaries of music with almost every album they release" Gayo Dot is just weird for the sake of being weird, that's why all the hipster faggots (like Anthony Fagtano) love it. Plus, it's a scientific fact that music stopped evolving a long time ago, deal with it.

You know the ironic thing is that Wilson pretty much hated (and probably still does...) that PT was called 'The New Pink Floyd", probably because he doesn't see his music as mind blowing as DSOTM. I love Wilson's work and enjoy his albums, that includes the debated Raven (to be fair, I enjoy only Luminol, Drive Home, The Pin Drop, and the title track), but calling HCE better than DSOTM...Come on. That's a bit of a stretch.

Obviously not Dark Side of the Moon quality, it's certainly an entertaining hour of music. I don't feel cheated and feel it was worth the wait. It will fit nicely in with some of the better albums of his discography but it doesn't top it or anything. I think a lot of people judge albums too quickly. Some that love it now may think otherwise in a few months because we're still in the honeymoon phase. It can easily grow or sour still, I haven't had enough time to digest it yet

Don't confuse prog with being vanguardist. Are not copulative. Prog rock is a genre (more or less defined, but you are always within the limits of rock -in general-), is not the pretension to push the limits of music itself, i.e., atonalism, avante-gard, etc. (I will check both artists you mention)

    Montag Abend
  • LakeGlade12

If you want to hear genuine Progressive music that is still in the realms of Prog Rock then you have to go elsewhere. Kayo Dot (or anything from Toby Driver) is a great example of a band that pushes the boundaries of music with almost every album they release.

This was clarified in the recent All About Jazz interview when he was talking about Home Invasion and Regret #9. He talked how he wrote the song and how each idea follows the next. But in reality all he did was take well established Djet Metal, Jazz Fusion and 70s Prog and mix them together. He tried to be progressive here but he admitted he did not succeed. He thought he was being progressive but it was only later he found he had taken the ideas from other artists. However that does not take anything from the song itself or the creativity of mixing his genres together.

  • LakeGlade12

The way I see it is that SW does try to be progressive, sometimes very hard when it comes to albums like Insurgentes, Voyage 34 or Storm Corrosion. But as much as I love SW I know that writing truly progressive music is not is strength. His strengths come from taking various genres (usually Prog Rock but other genres as well), mixing them together well enough to not sound like a copycat and then adding his PT/Solo style to it. I also think SW is one of the best and most consistent Prog songwriters to have ever existed, which is why he has build such a huge fan-base and gets 5/5 from all the critics. You only have to look at his discovery to show he does not compromise musically and he always does his best. But he has never been a progressive artist and he never will be.
