Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40 years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
DIVIDED BY
Album's Total Running Time

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

(*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.

Il titolo dice tutto, ma vi prego, non fermatevi qui, io devo assolutamente denunciare la deficienza di quelle persone che più in là del proprio molo, non vanno.
Ma io dico, cazzo stai a fare sul molo se poi non pigli la tua barca?
Arriverò al punto, senza girarci troppo attorno:
L'altra mattina, con mia spiacevole sorpresa, stavo vagando su Facebook alla ricerca di qualche bel video divertente condiviso dai miei amici.
Il brutto di Facebook è che non puoi far a meno di venire a sapere cose più o meno personali di ex compagni di classe di cui non te ne fotte un cazzo, ma lo tieni lì, nella lista amici, perché ti dispiace toglierli, sopratutto se sei stato tu, da bravo coglione, ad aggiungerli.
Ebbene, io sapevo già che questa ragazza fosse innamorata persa dei Lost, Finley e tutti gli altri cazzoni che oltre a farsi il ciuffo emo, cosa rispettabilissima, ma, fino ad un certo punto, che fanno musica che io personalmente non riesco ad ascoltare.
Ci ho provato, eh. Io ci provo sempre. Ho provato ad ascoltarli, i Lost. Fanno testi penosi e il sound è pessimo. Ho provato a sentire anche i Tokio Hotel e vi dirò... sì il batterista le sa usare le bacchette, il gemellino coi rasta non mi dispiace neppure fisicamente... ma le canzoni hanno una struttura banalissima, non sono dinamiche, sono ripetitive e sono melodicamente ritrite e ritrite.
Non parto prevenuta, per niente, anzi, sono fra le poche persone che ha provato ad ascoltare queste band. Ma giuro, non mi piacciono e questa è solo la mia opinione.
Però devo accusare tutti gli individui di deficienza per un motivo:
La ragazza che ho citato prima, aveva condiviso un bel video, a mio avviso sconcertante, che si intitola così:
*Sfida tra chitarristi (Roby vs Ka vs Tom vs Sonohra)*

Vi prego stringete i denti e non moritemi di infarto proprio adesso.

Ma possibile che non avete mai sentito gente come Allen Collins(Lynyrd Skynyrd), David Gilmour(Pink Floyd), Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page(Led Zeppelin), Steve Vai, Van Halen, Angus Young(AC/DC), Santana, Joe Satriani....
E cito questi solo per essere banale, perché sono solo gli autori degli assoli più famosi nella storia della musica!
Per tutti gli amanti di Kirk Hammett(Metallica), Slash(Guns N' Roses), Zakk Wylde e altri, non offendetevi, volevo solo evitare di fare una lista troppo lunga.
Ragazzi, vi prego aprite gli occhi. Davanti a voi non c'è solo una piccola spiaggia bagnata da un pò d'acqua, c'è un intero oceano da scoprire, fino in fondo, negli abissi.
C'è musica che merita davvero di essere ascoltata, non limitatevi, VI PREGO!
E fate un pò il confronto... non vorrete mica dirmi che sono meglio i Lost degli AC/DC?! Oppure i Tokio Hotel migliori dei Led Zeppelin?
E parlo sia tecnicamente che musicalmente.

How could I have known how much I would love Mew when I first found them. I hadn't the slightest clue the enormity of the impact this band would have on my life while looking over their biography here on Last.fm. It's not common for me to listen to just one band for months on end, like I once did Oceansize. I'm just absolutely amazed by these brilliant Danish musicians. They have actually joined the ranks alongside Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend, and maudlin of the Well as one of the most important, influential bands I've ever listened to. It really shows too, as Mew is actually closing in on outplaying Strapping Young Lad and has even already passed up Steve Vai & Oceansize on my charts!

Thank god for Mew. If not for bands like these, I'd lose all faith in everything.

Alright, listen up fuckos.
So, you like music? Wrong. You hate music. Music is the bane of your existence, until introduced to the almighty musical raptor god, Devin Townsend.
Heard of him? Possibly. Heard of Strapping Young Lad? Probably. Devin Townsend had the role of vocals, guitars and keyboards in Strapping Young Lad. Heard of Steve Vai? Yeah, terrible music, besides the Sex & Religion album where Devin premiered.

Anything Devin Townsend, or HevyDevy, touches turns to gold. Got a fucking shitty guitar that doesn't make the whammy sound you want it to? Hand it to Devin and listen to it now. It's a shame you won't be able to play the sound like Devin, but hey, at least you know your shitty piece of shit guitar is working. Does your voice suck? Yes. Yes it does, nothing we can do about that unless Devin licks the inside of your throat, but let's face it he doesn't have the time for you and your problems.

So here is what we are going to do since you don't have the mind to play good music like Devin Townsend. The beauty of it all is you only have to listen, not play it. You can sing it if you want, in fact, I encourage it. Devin's lyrics are also gold, and as long as you can pronounce the words worth a shit you are quite welcome to scream the wax out of my ear. So, we are going to get you into Devin Townsend, it's easy work, but you are most likely to lazy to find a pot of gold at the end of the metal rainbow.

I had Devin Townsend in my library for some time before I actually began to have orgasms to his music. I had Accelerated Evolution and Synchestra at first, both two amazing albums, as is all of his work. The majority of this time I was deep into doom metal, and a lot of gothic metal. I could not stop scrobbling some of this music to listen to some guy with a skullet producing the most influential music known to man. I remember, it was during March of 2009 I decided to take a break from my "Moonspell", "Tiamat", and "The Project Hate MCMXCIX" and put my library of 9,500 songs on shuffle. I didn't much care about changing tracks if they sucked, I was playing World of Warcraft, and fuck, any music was acceptable. Except hip hop. And country. And well, most music that was never really in my library.

After scrobbling through some crap, crap, and more crap, the song "Notes From Africa" came on. The intro was quite long, but also very exciting. Then the vocals came into play. Stunning, those HevyDevy vocals. I was literally speechless, and was quick to explore the rest of his music. What I got, was every track brilliant and unique. A well needed change to my ears, and I grew even more obsessed when I learned about his character. A whacky fellow, as Devin calls himself "A froot loop." But he had a hippy side to him... the drugs, the laid back style, a philosophy of higher intelligence. Not that far from me! Or, rather, what I wanted to be! I became more like him as I drowned in his music. I became the laid back, uncaring guy I wanted to be. Anyway, I began to watch some of his videos. Vampira was probably the second song I listened to by him, besides Ayreon's "Day Sixteen: Loser" where he had a role. Vampira's music video was odd and humorous, to say the least. Taking place in a comic book, and the motions Devin made reminded me of Moonspell's "Scorpion Flower" video.

Progressing further...
I explored the intarwebz further for information of this canadian metal god. After reading many articles of interest, I found myself buying his merchandise. I remember the day I heard "Terria" and "Ocean Machine" ... Man, I was in a trance. Playing back the songs 10 times, taking them in.

So here's what I'm going to tell you to do.

Like really heavy music?
Start out with albums like "Physicist" and "Ziltoid the Omniscient"
Two amazing, very heavy albums. Also all of Strapping Young Lad's work. Well, maybe not Satan's Ice Cream Truck.

Sort of the soft, pussy side of music?
I assure you, nothing is pussy about Devin's softer work. Though all the soft music you have is pussy shit. Anyway, songs on Terria and Ocean Machine are pretty good for this starting point. Songs like "Nobody's Here", "Stagnant", and "Life". Also, Devin Townsends most recent release "Ki" is a very chill album

Let's say you like the sounds of nature. You have no taste in music, so you listen to CD's with the sounds of the ocean, and birds, and lamo stuff like that. Devin has music for that to. Two notable ambient albums: Hummer, and Devlab. These albums are fantastic for quiet moments, or when you need to get some sleep.

Okay, so you are into a more upbeat poppish side of music? Well guess what: Christeen. Yeah, allusions to The Phantom of the Opera. Infinity is the album for you. Do me a favor, actually. When you listen to this CD, listen to the song "Ants" first. Also, from the album "Synchestra" is Sunshine and Happiness! Also check out Slow Me Down from "Accelerated Evolution".

Into funny music? First of all, fuck you. Second, he does that to. Take a listen to "Roadkill" from his Ass Sordid Demos.

Punk? Yeah, I said it. Punk music. Devin Townsend is truly a genius, making the best punk music in the known universe. "Cooked on Phonics" from Devin's punk project "Punky Brüster" is a genius album, playing hysterical punk music making fun of punk music. The album is a concept, so listen to it in order so you understand it.
