trtb it's cool that last.fm uses the original cover with the richard avedon photo instead of the blacked out version that you see more often

naotas_forehead Yeah, people. I don't know why there are so many long-winded arguments in this shoutbox. Show some respect for this masterpiece.
September 2012 -
Argamocrypt Sunheadbowed, just stop, you're fucking clueless.
August 2012 -
sunheadbowed Go back and read my statement: "Alt. rock certainly did exist, in label if not in ideology. Perhaps you missed the 1990's." and then read what you typed in reply to me. It's amusing! Alt. rock did exist, because it was an umbrella term the media gave to many different areas of rawk that emerged after the Nirvana break-through; basically every band that a major experimented with. That you think it existed in the 80's before the boom happened was the comical fictional genre issue -- of course it did not, and that wikipedia article you read was giving background on where the 'genre' emerged from. Genres are propagated by the next wave of bands who attempt to emulate, so it certainly matters if the bands deny the term. PS. You are a bit of a dumb teenager, really, aren't you? -- "crusade against "the man""! cringe.
April 2012 -
NoahIsCool "fictional genre of music the media created from post-hardcore" lmao, oh god. just because the bands deny the term doesn't mean it doesn't exist. keep continuing your crusade against "the man" and the pidgeon-holing tendencies of the evil "mass media" corporations, it looks cool
April 2012 -
sunheadbowed Noah, I have no words for how stupid your statement was, but thanks for telling me the background on a fictional genre of music the media created from post-hardcore, despite your age being 19. Go read some more wikipedia. By the way, "college rock" was another idiotic term the bands hated and the media pushed. "They".
April 2012 -

cjkisaragi Thanks for the history lesson
April 2012 -
NoahIsCool alt rock did exist in the late 80s, including 87. it just wasn't mainstream. sonic youth were alt rock pioneers along with dinosaur jr. and pixies. tho surfer rosa wasnt till 88. or maybe you just meant the term "alt rock" wasn't applied to anything back then, in that case you're right. they just called it college rock in the beginning
April 2012 -
Kubstofferson I like how in the album version of Schizophrenia the bass and Lee's guitar parts are quite back in the mix in the opening riff. It means that you hear the intro as being in a major key. In live versions you can hear it's actually in the relative minor.
Februar 2012 -
naotas_forehead I think I have just fallen in love with this album <3

andover Alt rock never existed at any time.
Oktober 2011 -
sunheadbowed "But I guess I went in with the wrong mindset considering this is obviously alt. rock." You did indeed, since there was no such thing as 'alt rock' in 1987.

Polistaman great album. everytime i listened to it is like it was the first time.

mk741 A good record, great at times (Master-Dik and Kotton Krown being the highlights), but I just wished it was noisier the entire time. But I guess I went in with the wrong mindset considering this is obviously alt. rock.

wi-lll Fucking great record.

farpin You shouldn't be surprised though that your vinyl-version-trumps-all policy is going to rub some people the wrong way, and your claim that every copy of the album that uses the better-known cover is a reissue is a bit disingenuous. But either way I enjoyed the conversation with you. This isn't the first OCD-inspired debate on last.fm and it won't be the last!
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich You've asked me, why am I making such a big deal of it. Well, I can ask you the same question. I think, Last.fm is about exploring. People will get know, that there is such a cover even exist :-) Be more tolerant.
April 2011 -
farpin I'm not saying "popular = original," I'm saying it makes more sense for the more popular/ubiquitous cover to be the official cover. The 1987 CD cover is as much of an original as the 1987 LP cover that apparently existed (see? you taught me something). Like the red vs. black-and-white covers of Rather Ripped, I think it makes more sense for the more recognized cover to be displayed. We can enjoy our limited edition alternate vinyl covers in the privacy of our own homes.
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich I don't think "popular = original" is the right statement. And yeah, since LP is the main format Sonic Youth use (some releases are only on vinyl) and since Stevie confirmed it's an original cover, I think, it makes sense this artwork to be here.
April 2011 -
farpin But I own an original 1987 SST copy of Sister on CD that I bought way back in the day that uses the more popular cover. It isn't a reissue. So it seems like you just believe that whatever artwork the LP version uses is the "real" version, every other format, copy, and discussion be damned.
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich No, reissues are reissues. Now, lets upload B/W cover to "Rather Ripped".
April 2011 -
farpin So, if we suppose that "your" image was on a 1987 vinyl edition, but every other subsequent release (barring the 2010 vinyl-only reissue) uses the other side's collage as the cover, doesn't there come a point when the "original" image stops being the official cover, especially when everywhere you see the album discussed, the image that's on 99% of available copies is what is used?
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich *facepalm.jpg* There were like 100 releases of "Sister" and 99% of it was "your" cover, it's well-known, but it doesn't make it original. Man, you were telling me there is no such cover at all at first :-) ps: the only web-site for cover history http://www.discogs.com/Sonic-Youth-Sister/release/1056093 ps2: you can upload any shit to wikipedia
April 2011 -
farpin Well you have a lot of work on your hands informing the rest of the world that what they thought was the album cover is the wrong image. Here are some links to get you started. 1 down, hundreds to go - good luck! http://allmusic.com/album/sister-r18427 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_(Sonic_Youth_album) http://itunes.apple.com/no/album/sister/id17009758 http://www.rollingstone.com/music/artists/sonic-youth
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich Are you fucking trolling me or what? Cover is cover, not the backside. At first, I was sure you haven't seen first pressing. But when you said, that THAT LP was a new reissue (which, by the way, has censored cover and purple vinyl) I doubt you have seen any "Sister" covers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samandjo/5514850270/ And yeah, why would people selling SST records on ebay post "flipsides" instead of front cover? Man, get over it.
April 2011 -
farpin You didn't ask him the entire question. If he says that's the original cover *and not the flipside* then I'll believe it.
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich Now it's end of debate http://s010.radikal.ru/i312/1104/d9/1eb492b979cb.png
April 2011 -
farpin That's the vinyl-only REISSUE that came out last year. EVERY OTHER release since the record came out in 1987 has used the other image as the front cover. Look anywhere else about information on Sister and the consensus on the album's cover is so clear that I don't know why you're making such a big deal out of it. And yes the site I linked to was made by Chris Lawrence, whose effort in documenting the band's discography was done so thoroughly that the band uses it on their own website.
April 2011 -
zhelnerovich Just because you said so? I know this web-site, It's run by 1 fan. Some songs there doesn't even have a proper names. http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/4/2/9/7/2/5/webimg/457656564_o.jpg Sleeve opens from the right side.
