Good that you mention Sade, because the text was written by him, not Boyd Rice. If it lacks nuance, that is because Sade was not nuanced. He was an unapologetic rapist pervert. I'm interested in learning what the recording industry is "doing to music", and why Boyd Rice would object to it. Mute Records is part of the recording industry. Is Daniel Miller damaging music by distributing Boyd Rice's albums? Does Boyd Rice not appreciate the financial rewards he gets from this commercial process? He has made a good living from the music industry, established a decent reputation as a niche outsider artist, and had a lot of fun provoking idiotic Trotskyists in the process. Commercialism has benefited him. I don't see how this contradicts the principles elucidated in that song. If you listen to Paradise of Perfection and read the book from which it is extracted, it will be easy to tell that Boyd Rice is a "man in time". He more or less confirms this in one of the Iconoclast interviews.

I agree with you, TripleSol, but I wouldn't characterize ol' Boyd as naive, I would characterize him as willfully set in his conception. Like most power-seekers, his search for power in line with the "natural order", and the attitude this causes him to adopt (and the "shocking" stunts it puts him into), are products of resentment towards his own powerlessness in the capitalist industrial order which neutralizes his individuality. Yet he cannot accept that the solution to this problem lies in the radical isonomist project because he has absorbed the bourgeois belief that collective liberation as a threat to his personal liberation. Thus, we have the pseudo-Nietzchean valorization of dominant identity, of power and dominance which erases the other, much like we see in deSade (but in Rice's case rather less nuanced and seemingly without recognizing his own contradictions). Or maybe the whole thing is a big fucking piss-take and Rice is chuckling into his flaming tiki drink at us.

On the other hand, preserve thy loneliness has some of the most beautiful lyrics I've heard in my life.

I haven't listened to this in a while... now that i'm listening to love love love i think this is a romantic and a bit naive way of seeing power, i'm sure Mr. Rice does not appreciate what the record industry is doing to music, or what the film industry is doing to cinema, and those two examples are manifestations of power in this case capitalist power. "Natural order" thinking tends to romanticize power and at the same time hate capitalism.

Hardly a fan of the artists involved, more like an occasional observer. But still, this collaboration is tragically underrated and incredible.
