Alben
Rushs Musikstil änderte sich sehr stark über die Jahre. Die Alben vor 1980 sind eine Mischung aus Heavy Metal und Progressive Rock, ähnlich Yes oder Genesis. Hier zeigt sich optisch die Verwandtschaft zu anderen Glam Rock-Bands aus der Gründungszeit, wie Iggy Pop oder T. Rex durch glitzernde Kostüme und Bühnenshows. Die Liedtexte dieser Zeit waren stark von Science Fiction und zum Teil philosophischen Einflüssen von Ayn Rand geprägt, was auf den Alben 2112 (1976) und Hemispheres (1978) deutlich wird.
Permanent Waves änderte alles dramatisch. Obwohl die Musik weiterhin auf Heavy Metal basierte, wurden zunehmend Keyboards eingebaut. Die Songs gerieten kürzer und kamen schneller auf den Punkt. Zwar fiel Rushs Songwriting, d.h. Musik und Text, nun etwas konventioneller und somit zugänglicher aus, der Stil des Trios blieb jedoch weiterhin progressiv, wohl aber mit einer Portion Alternative Rock versehen. Speziell ein Song,
The Spirit of Radio, benannt nach der wegweisenden, lokalen Radiostation CFNY aus Toronto, wurde ein großer Hit in der alternativen Szene.

The fact is that the vinyl rip I got has much more dynamic range than the CD version. And I don't hear much clipping on it either. Of course there will never be a perfect sounding VT because even in the recording process there was digital distortion afaik. Retrospective 3 tracks sound better than album versions, but have poor dynamic range just like anything they released since VT.

v VT for vinyl might help a little because too much loudness on vinyl causes the needle to jump out of the groove. Regardless most of the differences people think they hear on vinyl are usually psychosomatic anyway. However the difference between the original Rush CD pressings and the 97 remasters are quite apparent to me. Some of the albums sound worse, lime Power Windows (shitty album anyway...), but others much better like Show of Hands, Hemispheres, Kings, to name a few. I keep reading on Amazon how the Sector 1 set sounds better than the 97 remasters but I seriously doubt it (again, probably psychosomatic).

@KeIemvor I doubt a needledrop can help, it's been said that the sound was distorted digitally during mixing. @_guyraddudeman When I read it was from Rhinos I was already expecting crap. I only have 2112 from the Rush Remasters which is quite good, though I still prefer the 1st press.

Although not complete, the VT songs on Retrospective 3 sound somewhat better than VT proper. ¶ Yeah I downloaded the hi-res rip of Yes' "Fragile" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" and both were absolutely awful. Typically if the modern remaster is garbage (most of the time it is), I go with the MFSL masters, if available. Although there are good remaster projects out there, like the first Led Zeppelin ones from the early 1990s, Rush from the mid 1990s, Dire Straits from mid 1990s, and the mid-90s Castle Records Iron Maiden sets.

If you really like Vapor Trails, you're better off with a proper vinyl-rip. @iglassinreverse: No, I'm not seeing them this year, but not because of CA, it just doesn't work out this time, unfortunately.

Well, Vapor Trails has slightly better DR so maybe if you really really like that album it would be worth it. Otherwise even the Rush Remasters seem to be better than the HDtracks. I really hate how I can only trust HDtracks to buy classical and jazz.

Hemispheres is one of their best for sure. @Kelemvor Are you going to see Rush in June? Or are you staying away fro CA completely? It's a great show for Rush fans but not as much for casual ones.
