Dies Irae – Sculpture of Stone

Dies Irae from Poland. Not the most well known band from that scene. Half surprising considering its line up consisting of (now) former Vader, Decapitated and various members who are known for their other bands/projects. The reason seems to be because this band has been sort of treated as a side project by Mauser, the last remaining founding member, and absolutely not because of the musical quality as i will explain later on.

The evolution of this band has been fairly standard with their debut album being the most straightforward albeit very competent typically yet unique Polish styled band to an band which evolved their own sound and just became better and different. Allot of comparisons are being made with Vader for this band. Saying that there are no resemblances would be a lie. The band has allot of similar sounding elements but i think that doesn't lie in the fact that they are copying stuff from Vader but because there were 2 now former Vader members(Mauser and Doc) in the band but the 2nd guitarist is mostly known for his work with Sceptic and definitely ads his own touch especially soloing wise.

Of course an album is made by its instrumentation and not by the art and lyrical theme and usually are just extra's which rarely enhance the rest but i think its still important mentioning them in a review especially if you are interested in buying the album. If you do not care about these however you can skip the following 2 paragraphs.

The art of the album is fairly standard non gore based death metal album art. The front has some CGI art of 3 sculptures in stone. The back has a picture of the entire band. In the booklet itself there are shots of every band member. There are also some skulls, gargoyles, a roman/Greek statue head and some Latin in the booklet. All art is pretty much gray. Really nothing exceptional thus art wise.

The lyrics are fairly good despite some engrish. The lyrical themes vary from what seems to be in order for the songs: Lovecraftian, werewolves, death, birth and rebirth of the universe with a anti christian/religious touch, misanthropy, anti-life, death again, about the beginning of sin and finally about the passage of time. The lyrics are thus fairly varied. Novy the bassist/vocalist doesn't pronounce them very clearly and the lyrics are thus not very understandable but if you can still understand them well, they are easily good enough to not cause any annoyance.

Guitarmanship wise this album is very solid but not exceptional. The riffs have allot of palm muting and are somewhat technical. Id say the riffing is a mix between Decapitated and thrashless Vader and are quite excellent. There is some lead work in here but usually there are solos instead of having any lead guitars. The solos are well done and add to the overall experience. The guitar tone is quite clean but not sterile and fits well with the other musical elements and is fairly powerful.

The bass is in the background but is competently played and is cleaner in sound than the guitars. My preference would be that the bass would have been more in the foreground mixing wise and with a somewhat dirtier sound but as it works it works quite well none the less and certainly adds to making this album heavy.

Doc again provides very well competent drumming. Blasts when it fits double basses when it fits and the fills are all well done and again also played when they fit. The drumming other than that is fairly standard and could have been more exciting and less standard but it does work very well with the other instruments.

Vocal wise this band is maybe the most unique. Novy has a really unique sort of slowish drawn out growl and at times sounds absolutely brilliant for example on the track The Beginning of Sin. The tone of the growls are mostly in the mid-low end of the spectrum with some higher growls at some places. The vocals are maybe the best part of the album and are mixed and produced basically perfectly.

A band with excellent individual instruments can still be a bad/boring overall product and luckily Dies Irae's Sculpture of Stone does not suffer from this at all. All songs here are of good quality with everything working well together to create good somewhat technical Polish death metal. There are a couple of standout tracks, namely Beyond all Dimensions, The Art of an Endless Creation, The Beginning of Sin and Sculpture of Stone. With The Beginning of Sin being my overall favorite track. The other songs although also well done don't strike me as much as those 4 tracks i just mentioned.

In the end id say this album is very well made were the individual parts except the vocals are not very amazing but make each other better. The vocals are excellent regardless of the rest of the album. This album's biggest downside is that it isn't really anything new, if this album was released when the Polish death metal scene just came into being it would have been hailed as a classic now. For me it is a classic, this is the album that got me into full fledged death metal. I'm very glad i found this album instead of the Mexican melodic death band of the same name and with almost the same album name and as i look at it with the eyes from a new death metal fan i can look at this album for what it is individually and not as a release from a genre that when this album was released was already over 15 years old.

In the end I'm giving it a score of 85%. It doesn't get the full 100% because it is nothing really innovating. However it is a release that every death metal fan should have in at least some form.

  • best of decade part second (2000-2002)

    22. Nov. 2009, 18:55 von rbsnb

I finally whittled my top 94 down to 33 all time greats. Incredibly nothing from 2008 made it but there you go. In no particular order except by year here are my favourite albums of the last nine years, starting with the first third.

    2000
    Radiohead - Kid A

Just as OK Computer seemed to start tying up the loose ends of the 1990s, Kid A and its twin brother Amnesiac set the tone for the rest of the 00s. Glacial synthesizers, eerie looped vocals, epic choruses, soft ballads, body shaking bass-lines. What more could you want? Well, OK, it is a bit depressing, but the rest of the decade MORE than makes up for that.

    2001
A Silver Mt. Zion - Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward

Godspeed You! Black Emperor died in 2000 and were reborn as this former side-project. Epic strings, singing, monologues, dramatic experiments and generally noisy hammer hitting.

Avalanches - Since I Left You

A perfect pop album filled with fun samples, inspiring the later adventures and proving that hippop wasn't dead.

    Daft Punk - Discovery

    French disko

The Strokes - Is This It?

Throwback post-punk-rock darlings, undeniably accessible, undeniably influential on the rest of the decade. Compressed slices of New York recalling their own influences but never knowingly undersold. Overhyped at the start, ignored and scorned in the middle, welcomed back slowly towards the end - certainly not the best album of the entire decade but deserving of a place up there.

    2002
    mclusky - mclusky Do Dallas

I'm tired of explaining that it wasn't supposed to be allowed, I'd buy it but it wasn't supposed to be like this, you can't touch me, I'm never old, your heart's gone the colour of a dust bin.

The Streets - Original Pirate Material

UK garage warrior makes good with this chilled out and lyrically talented melange.
  • If my life was a movie, what soundtrack would it have?

    22. Nov. 2009, 17:45 von Harry_01

    Opening Credits
Ennio Morricone - The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
    HELL YEAH!!! This is EPIC!

    Waking Up
    Pink Floyd - High Hopes
Great song for waking up and then, when David Gilmour's guitar solo kicks in... THIS must be a great day! =)

    First Day At College
Bob Dylan - 4th Time Around
Yeah the other three times I was visiting the young and attractive female professor, if you know what I mean, harrharr.

    Falling In Love
Joshua Radin - What If You
Really beautiful song. It's a break-up song though. Maybe she's falling in love with me but I'm not with her.
    Like he sings:

    "So, for tonight
    I'll stay here with you
    Yes, for tonight
    I'll lay here with you

    But when the sun
    Hits your eyes
    Through your window
There'll be nothing you can do"

    I'm such a bad guy! :D

    Losing Virginity
    Jack Johnson - Cocoon
She is losing virginity and I'm the one who breaks her cocoon. Oh what a metaphor! ;)

    Fighting
    Eddie Vedder - Long Nights
I'll not use "fight" as the common term of "combat", more like "struggle". Maybe I'm struggling with not knowing who I am, where I belong, etc.

    Breaking Up
    Blackfield - Open Mind
Is it that I'm too open minded that she breaks up with me?!

    Prom
    Robbie Williams - Feel
Wow, this is a beautiful song! I could imagine dancing with a gorgeous girl to this song.

    Life
    The xx - Fantasy
Erm, my life is just a fantasy?

    Depression
Bright Eyes - The Movement Of A Hand
Maybe I'm depressed 'cause I couldn't understand the movement of a hand.

    Driving
Death Cab for Cutie - Bixby Canyon Bridge
I'm listening to this song while driving on an early winter's day.

    Partying
    The Doors - Soul Kitchen
Not the party song that I had expected, but yeah, nice though.

    Happy Dance
    Pink Floyd - Bike
Yeah, I'd love to dance to this song! It'd be ridiculous and funny.

    You & Friends
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Red House
Me & friends making a jam session and listening to this song to get inspired by.

    Betrayal
Tenacious D - Fuck Her Gently
I'm so sorry honey! It was just that girl I've seen on the streets, you know, she was so drop-dead gorgeous and I, I just couldn't resist.

    Regretting
Jack Johnson - Times Like These
I miss times like these, where everything was so perfect and these times were only with you. So please, don't leave me!

    Long Night Alone
    Jack Johnson - Enemy
You might think I'm your enemy, but that don't make you mine.

    Flashback
Bright Eyes - Arc of Time (Time Code)
Would fit nicely as a flashback song.

    Getting Back Together
Coldplay - Swallowed By The Sea
Cute and tearful reunion. Very moving.

    Wedding
    Bon Iver - Flume
GREAT! I love it. Memo to myself: This song should be played on my wedding.

    Honeymoon
Yann Tiersen - Comptine d'un Autre Été L'Après Midi
    Beautiful!

    Birth of Child
    Iron & Wine - Carousel
Nice song for one of the best moments that life offers: The birth of a child.

    Losing Someone Dear
Weezer - The Damage In Your Heart
    Man, it fits so perfectly.

    Final Battle
    E.S. Posthumus - Ebla
An epic battle this will be.

    Death
    Ólafur Arnalds - Fok
I didn't expect that Ólafur Arnalds would be the last thing I'd hear.
I'm sure I'll die peacefully and with a happy smile after listening to Fok.

    Funeral
Mono - Pure As Snow (Trails Of The Winter Storm)
Really beautiful. The funeral will be very moving.

    Final Credits
    Ludovico Einaudi - Yerevan II
Sad ending credits. Could imagine half of the people are crying while leaving the theatres.

I'm a bit disappointed that there was no Muse, Radiohead or Jeff Buckley.

So here's how you do it:
    - Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.)
    - Put it on shuffle
    - Press play
    - For every question, type the song that's playing
    - When you go to a new question, press the next button
    - No cheating!

I work in a nightclub/speakeasy/lounge, we have different live acts and different DJs play almost every night of the week. Often DJ's play Radiohead tracks, some you wouldn't expect to hear in a bar, Exit Music, Lucky, and Reckoner to name a few. Anyways, this "Trip-hop"/"down tempo" DJ was spinning the other night and threw down the SpielenClimbing Up The Walls (Fila Brazillia Mix) and then later on used TREEFINGERS to mix into Led Zeppelin when the owner asked for more classic rock to be played. I couldn't believe this kid played SpielenTreefingers in a club, and pulled it off!

  • Björk's top 100 songs - Happy Birthday Björk!

    21. Nov. 2009, 3:41 von Constellation66

    It's Bjork's Birthday! Party Time!

Over the course of my life, there’s been only a few artists that really have affected me personally with their powerful and timeless music. I generally enjoy diverse music, including the likes of Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, Klaxons, Goldfrapp, Coldplay, Metallica, Arcade Fire, múm, Kings of Leon and even a few of The Beatles songs. But of all the music I’ve listened to, Björk has been the most influential on my life.

Before I had ever listened to Björk’s music, I thought she was just another strange female artist you occasionally hear in the media. But then one day I heard Hyperballad and that amazing music video that went with it, and I was hooked ever since. I then took the plunge, taking a risk on an unfamiliar artist, listening to more and more of her music and getting more and more hooked with each song. I then discovered that not only is she an ageless beauty, and so unique in personality, her entire life is consumed by music. And I’ve been consumed by her music ever since!

As Bjork celebrates her birthday today, I thought it’d be appropriate to list her top 100 songs of her glorious career thus far. Happy Birthday Bjork! and here's hoping to another 20 years of musical excellence. Of course this list is just my personal opinion, and some people rank songs more than others, but nonetheless:

    18. SpielenStorm
Off her Drawing Restraint 9 soundtrack, this is probably one of the most terrifying and haunting songs you’ll hear. I think this sums it up: "Björk's lone vocal soars in the chorus like the booming siren of a blue whale who suddenly realized she was the last of her species."

    17.I Remember You
An unlikely choice, seeming as it is a Bjork cover. But this is a slow moving, touching love song that hits a nerve. “When my life is through, and the angels ask me to recall, the thrill of them all, I shall tell them… I remember you.”

    16. Wanderlust
Off her most recent album, this is definitely one of her best efforts off it. Heavy Beats with some elctronic sounds combined with Bjork’s great vocals works well.

    15. I Miss You
A slightly more hip-hop type song, but Bjork pulls it off again with a catchy tune and odd lyrics. “I miss you, but I haven’t met you yet.”

    14.SpielenIt's in Our Hands
“It’s in our hands, it always was”. Great track.

    13. SpielenHunter
A brilliant use of hard drumming beats makes this song completely, and is a slight change from her other music in tempo. “I thought that I could organise freedom, how scandinavian of me.”

    12. SpielenVenus As A Boy
With a quirky xylophone beat and lush strings, mixed with Bjork’s playful lyrics this song is one of her most catchiest and upbeat songs .

    11. SpielenHarm of Will
A soft and touching song which relies on Bjork’s magnificent vocals and nice choir in the background.

    10. SpielenPagan Poetry
A sort of Japanese sounding song with it’s intro and parts throughout the song, but mixes with some great electronic beats to make a elegant and beautiful song. “On the surface, simplicity. But the darkest part of me is Pagan Poetry."

    9. Desired Constellation
A song that you usually listen to alone, at night, or star-gazing. A moving melody background sound that was apparently made from voice loops making a bell type sound which suits the mood perfectly. It can’t be repeated, which makes this a great song along with fantastic lyrics. “With a palm full of stars - I throw them like dice, repeatedly…until the desired constellation appears...”

    8. SpielenBachelorette
A raw, powerful song featuring violins and pounding beats mixed with Bjork’s soaring vocals is a true treat to the ears.

    7. Who Is It
A song that is beat-boxed (I didn’t even know the beats in this song were non-computer until I re-listened to it) entirely with no instruments sounds bad right? Wrong. A great song, and great lyrics. Possibly one of the strangest and cute music videos ever made which accompanies this song, which shows Bjork in a bell suit (yes you heard right) dancing with bell kids.

    6. SpielenAurora
“Goddess sparkle.” A heartfelt song that showcases Bjork’s sweet vocals but also has great help from a fantastic choir, and combined is match made in heaven.

    5. SpielenUnison
Such a powerful song. An AMAZING use of Bjork’s vocals, as the song builds to it’s amazing climax along with the help of a beautiful choir.

    4. SpielenAll Is Full of Love
The top 5 are very, very hard. This song is purely amazing and touching at the same time, with it’s electronic melody and use of instruments combined with great lyrics makes it an elegant yet beautiful song.

    3. SpielenUnravel
A song that has to be heard to be believed. “My heart comes undone, slowly unravels, in a ball of yarn”.Thom Yorke says it’s the most beautiful song he’s ever heard, and I’m not one to disagree! Strange sounding organs works brilliantly, the song is just another Bjork classic.

    2. Hyperballad
A strong but twisted song about love that’s not easily explained. It’s about waking up early in the morning, being destructive, throwing small things off a mountain, and imagining what her body would feel like slamming against rocks at the bottom of the cliff, asking “And when I land will my eyes be closed or open?”, and then finally returning to her lover's arms in the morning as if nothing’s happened.

    1. SpielenJóga
Perhaps the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. It’s a gorgeous song which not only showcases Bjork’s vocals but just how good music can be in Bjork’s hands. A masterpiece.

So there you have it. My opinion on her best 100 songs from an amazing artist. Feel free to agree or disagree with me, or even add your own list of her favourite songs.

Note: I didn't use any The Sugarcubes songs. I highly recommend Birthday if you want to hear Bjork's vocals soar to unimaginable heights.
