Queensrÿche ist eine US-amerikanische Progressive-Metal-Band aus Seattle, Washington und wurde 1981 gegründet. Queensrÿche war mit die erste Band, die den Heavy-Metal-Umlaut über das y setzte. Geoff Tate hat dazu einmal bemerkt: „Wir verbrachten elf Jahre damit, zu erklären, wie man das ausspricht.“
Die Gitarristen Chris DeGarmo und Michael Wilton, die vorher in diversen Coverbands aktiv gewesen waren, rekrutierten den Sänger Geoff Tate, den Bassisten Eddie Jackson und den Schlagzeuger Scott Rockenfield.
Nachdem mit diesem Line-Up erste Demos aufgenommen wurden, brachte die Band 1983 ihre erste EP, Queen Of The Reich auf ihrem eigenen Label 206 Records heraus. Das machte EMI Records auf die Band aufmerksam. Queen Of The Reich wurde bei EMI ein zweites Mal verlegt und erreichte Platz 81 in den US-Charts. Mit ähnlichem Erfolg wurden auch die Nachfolgealben The Warning (1984) und Rage For Order (1986) von Fans und Publikum aufgenommen.
Im Jahr 1988 schließlich kam mit Operation: Mindcrime der große Durchbruch. Sowohl bei den Kritikern als auch beim Publikum fand die ungewöhnliche Idee, ein Konzeptalbum im Metal-Bereich herauszubringen, großen Anklang. Der Nachfolger, Empire (1990), war jedoch von ganz anderer Machart, wenn auch kommerziell erfolgreicher. Während Operation Mindcrime von der ersten Sekunde an durchkonstruiert ist, macht Empire einen spontaneren, verspielten Eindruck. Die Singleauskopplung Silent Lucidity schaffte es in den amerikanischen Charts bis auf Platz 9. Ein tragischer Zwischenfall ereignete sich bei einem Konzert im belgischen Ichtegem am 20.

I just love the eerie, mysterious soundscape of the debut album! I find it similarly haunting to, say, Keeper I by Helloween, Dreamspace by Stratovarius, Fire of Unknown Origin by BÖC, some Grave Digger albums, and nearly anything older from Mercyful Fate/King Diamond... I love when they get this certain darkness out of the speakers if it suits the themes of the album! That said, I don't know if any newer album has this darker sound to it. I bet it's all just impersonal loudness war now. :/

Ultimately, album choices (old, new etc.) are only a matter of taste. Every album reflects the state of mind 'Ryche members had in each era. They never wanted to repeat themselves obviously.... E.g. - EP/The Warning=power metal gems. RFO = Sci-Fi prog, O:M = prog metal milestone, Empire : commercial hard rock, Promised Land : introverted melodic prog, HINTF = alternative rock, Q2K=hard rock..always progressing & changing. True, most 00's QR LP's lack a bit of character, but inspiration is hard to find in every release, especially for 50-yr+ old dudes. Give'em a break folks.. no one forces you to dig the new DtC, you can always ditch that and wait for a new LP :S :D

V Clean and good sounds tend to make an album more generic in my opinion. See any metal album today. No personal soundscape anymore, everything's too clear, heavy, perfect, compressed. Riight... I'm not listening to Promised Land anytime soon though as I have so much to enjoy in their previous godlike works for the rest of my life!
