    • Hip Hop Is Dead (2006) & Untitled (2008) + Related unreleased tracks

      11. Mai. 2011, 19:29 von jensyao

This article was initially written for a Nas group the author created. To revert back to the group, click here

After Nas' arrival on Def Jam, he immediately proceeded with making some of his more controversial concepts such as proclaiming that hip hop is dead and addressing racism with his untitled album. On HHID, Nas claimed that in order to carry on tradition, one must follow the styles and creativity from the golden age of hip hop instead of selling out just to make a profit from singles and not full albums. Also, Nas addressed that people were making a career too much from beefing and decided to respond to 50 Cent's "piggy bank" with a verse on a mixtape track called "Don't Body Yourself" f/ The Game. He didn't want so-called beef to build record sales for him nor his opponent. Also, Nas felt he knew why 50 was mad because 50 was supposed to be featured on Jennifer Lopez's single, but Nas took the place due to popularity and J. …

    • Vibrant Unicorn Parties

      1. Jul. 2008, 6:05 von Pantone-292

I only post to represent, yo. A few weeks ago we had what was (weirdly) named, the Vibrant Unicorn Party at Stadium West in Chicago. Don’t ask. It pretty much involved dressing in bright clothing and dancing.

The V.U.P. involved at least six or seven people taking helm as the laptop DJ over the night. The focus was new cuts and 90’s favorites. I have to do a shout-out to Le Tigre’s side project for partial inspiration, but it’s about time new jack swing and 90’s pop got accepted as the Pure Dance Gold that it is.

SO. Lo and behold some other bars in Chicago have recent;y decided to do a suspiciously similar dance party, and good for them, but I can’t help but feel they were stealing our groove. The last party was May 4th/5th (so you can check my scrobbling for full track listing), but my here’s a sample set of what was played: (pics below)

    • Flash Te Hira's top FIVE rap/hip-hop songs of all time!™

      27. Jun. 2007, 10:40 von porouian

I was thinking about this while driving home from the supermarket today. As you do. One of the songs on this list was playing, and as I mentally shuffled it into a rough top list of favourite songs, the idea for this journal was born.

I grew up listening to rap music. When I first seriously got into music at the tender age of about nine or 10, I enjoyed pop and R&B mostly - typical pre-pubescent fare. A couple of years later, friends introduced me to a genre of music that would dominate my teenage years. I began listening to tapes of what was big at the time, including Naughty By Nature, Ice Cube, and Snoop Doggy Dogg. Lighter Shade Of Brown, Brotherhood Creed, and Positive K were on the radio. Kris Kross and Cypress Hill videos were on tv. I soaked it all up. As time wore on, I floated towards the West Coast style of rap that was prevalent on the scene during the mid-90's. As the millennium drew to a close, I became more infatuated with the styles of the Midwest. …
