Wasilla AK, Vereinigte Staaten (2004 – aktuell)

Portugal. The Man ist eine 2004 gegründete US-amerikanische Indie-Rock-Band aus Wasilla, Alaska. Sie mischen verschiedenste Stile: Progressiver Rock und Indie-Pop vermischen sich mit experimentellen Einflüssen.
Die Auswahl des eher ungewöhnlichen und allen Journalisten mühsam zu erklärenden Band-Namens war das Ergebnis aus der Überlegung, ein Bandname müsse persönlich sein. Ein Name könne stehen für eine Gruppe, eine Person oder eben für ein Land und man habe sich für Portugal entschieden, weil dies gut klänge. Noch keines der Bandmitglieder sei bisher in dem Land gewesen und ihre Platten könne man dort auch nicht kaufen. Die Ergänzung „The man“ deute daraufhin, dass es sich nicht um ein Land, sondern um Personen handele. Dieser Name verkörpere für sie so etwas wie ein Alter Ego. „Die Entscheidung sei, nachdem der Vorschlag vorgelegen habe, spontan entschieden worden und jetzt hätte man den Erklärungsbedarf bei jedem Interview“, so die Bandmitglieder unisono [1].

Portugal. The Man wird 2004 von John Gourley und Zach Carothers von der gerade aufgelösten Hardcore-Punk-Band Anatomy of a Ghost, Wesley Hubbard, Nick Klein und Harvey Tumbleson in Wasilla gegründet. Die Bandmitglieder beschließen, nach Portland zu gehen, um näher an der US-amerikanischen Bandszene zu sein. Dort leben sie eineinhalb Jahre lang von kleineren Jobs, die gerade genug Geld einbringen, um die Band weiter zu finanzieren. 2005 treffen sie auf Jason Sechrist, der von da an am Schlagzeug sitzt.

    I hopped on the bandwagon after Church Mouth. I also listen to multiple genres (and Daft Punk). And I thoroughly enjoy Satanic and Ghetto. In the Mountain was a bit of a slip, but that's all I'll give you.

I expect Evil Friends to be more of the same. One or two good songs, one ends up on an EA game, and the rest filler garbage that the indie kids will be creaming their pants over.     they were sooo good in london last night! though for the first time (and i've seen them nine times now haha) they barely played any pre-satanic satanist songs - only marching with six and the devil. good choices, but i've always loved that they play varied set lists. i'm hoping it's just due to the adjustment of the lineup change and they will be back to more of a variety soon!
