  • 40 Questions About Your Top 50

    3. Dez. 2009, 0:01 von NH3Maser

Disclaimer: my top 50 don't really reflect my current taste in music all that well. I'm working on changing that.

    1. How did you get into 31?
In Flames. I was looking for a good metal instrumental, and someone recommended SpielenMan Made God.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Ah, Cynic's Veil of Maya. This may be my favorite album opener of all time.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29?
"Bow to the savior of the fearful and desperate / Shepherd of deception / Prophet of infection / Behold the Xenochrist!". Awesome outro. The Faceless were the ones who convinced me that Deathcore wasn't all shit.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
No contest, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The first hip-hop album I ever liked.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Mastodon. All five of their full-lengths. I also bough the ATHF movie soundtrack just for Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Demons and Wizards. Probably Fiddler On The Green.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
I'm pretty sure that there's a Beatles song for every emotion. I'll go with Julia.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?
Tough one, because The Doors have a lot of amazing tracks, but I'll say SpielenThe Unknown Soldier.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Kalmah is another tough one. Doubtful About It All, maybe?

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, of course. Off the top of my head, SpielenAngel.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Definitely Caught Somewhere in Time. Where Iron Maiden peaked in my opinion.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Ensiferum. Has to be SpielenInto Battle. The guitar solo... rock.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
Explosions in the Sky. Too many to count, mostly involving psychedelics.

    14. What is your favorite song by 37?
Radiohead. Surprisingly, I guess it's SpielenMeeting In The Aisle, a random instrumental B-side off of some EP.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Fuck yeah Necrophagist. SpielenTo Breathe in a Casket always makes me glad that I'm not currently buried alive, I guess.

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live?
Lamb of God - just once, in LA. Not that great a show.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Nirvana. Almost certainly SpielenSmells Like Teen Spirit.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Death? The obvious answer, Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.).

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Nope, never seen Joe Satriani.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45?
Sir Mix-A-Lot? Well, this is embarrassing. The time the Pitt band played SpielenJump on It at halftime at some football game, maybe? (This is one of the artists covered in the above disclaimer, by the way.)

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Metallica. Easily The Call of Ktulu.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
Black Sabbath. Dunno, likely SpielenIron Man.

    24. What is your favorite album by 21?
Not much of a selection as far as Dethklok albums go. I liked Dethalbum II better than the first one.

    25. What is your favorite song by 18?
    Pixies. Hmm... I Bleed.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
Guns N' Roses. First I can remember is SpielenWelcome To The Jungle.

    27. What is your favorite lyric by 3?
Sigh... Children of Bodom. Who knows, it's not like the lyrics to any of their songs are distinguishable anyways. Maybe "Warheart! With no compassion or love / Warheart! Hate your fellow as yourself" from Warheart.

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
Sublime. A lot of great songs, but I'll go with SpielenBoss D.J..

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
Slayer. I think it was SpielenAngel of Death, which I still regard as their best song.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
Wow, this is a tough choice for Led Zeppelin. I have to say Nobody's Fault But Mine, but this is very very close.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
I have no idea what OutKast is doing in this position. Never.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Yep, nearly all of Tenacious D's songs will do the trick. SpielenDouble Team always cracks me up.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
    God Dethroned. Easily Bloody Blasphemy.

    34. What is the worst song by 46?
Where to start with Styx? I used to like SpielenMr. Roboto, but all it does now is raise my urge to kill.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    Elvis. Hound Dog, I guess?

    36. What is your favorite album by 42?
Immortal Technique. Revolutionary Vol. 2 is amazing.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
    Jay-Z, never.

    38. What is your favorite album by 36?
Also a pretty sparse selection for Gorillaz. Between the two, I'll say Demon Days.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
The Who. This is unusual, but the first one I can remember is SpielenChristmas.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
Queen, A Night At The Opera.

  • My favourite albums without any order

    2. Dez. 2009, 23:59 von tobi116

    David Bowie - Earthling (1997)
David Bowie is an incredibly versatile artist who reinvented himself countless times during his 40years+ long career. His album Earthling is one of his most experimental works featuring lots of industrial-like technostomping beats, heavy guitars and synthies from hell. In my opinion his creativity was never bigger than on this one.
    Play: SpielenLittle Wonder

    The Clash - Sandinista!(1981)
The Clash were a lot more open minded to other musical styles than other punkbands from their time - their best known album London Calling combines reggae, ska and the punkrock from their previous two albums. Sandinista! continues that way and is a two cd-36 track-packet full of ideas tearing down all genre boundaries. The mixture of punk, genuine reggae/dub, funk, jazz and pop makes this album a classic that probably never gets boring.
    Play: SpielenThe Magnificent Seven

    Sparks - Hello Young Lovers(2006)
When a band that has been around since the late 60s releases an album nowadays the result is usually not what one would call interesting(The Rolling Stones anyone?). If that band is called Sparks - a band starting with "glamkindofrock" (Kimono My House, Propaganda) then developing into electronica(and, by the way releasing the incedibly influencial classic album No.1 In Heaven) from that to pop(SpielenWhen Do I Get to Sing 'My Way') from pop to baroque pop using huge walls of synth-strings(Lil' Beethoven) - the result is always worth a listen.
Their 2006 released album Hello Young Lovers shows the peak of their creativity combining the pompous sound of their previous album with rock guitars(done by Dean Menta, Faith No More) and the quirky songwriting of their earlier works that influenced countless bands such as Queen who even were Sparks' supportband in their early days.. A grand opus everyone should give a listen to.
    Play: SpielenDick Around

The Doors - Waiting for the Sun (1968)
The imho best album by the legendary acid rock band from LA with Jim Morrison on vocals. The psychadelic elements that already shone through the first two albums are dominating this album. It is full of interesting ideas like spanish guitars on Spanish Caravan and poppy synthies on Hello I Love You.
Play: Not to Touch the Earth

The Living End - Roll On (2001)
The three-piece band from Australia started off as a Stray Cats coverband which clearly influenced Chris Cheneys incredible guitar style as well as the use of the upright bass which makes them different from other modern Punkrockbands. Their debut was one of the most successful australian albums for decades and their liveperformances are among the best there are. Roll On was their second album. It combined their fresh and poweful approach on music with a much improved songwriting. It is their most complicated album to date and probably their heaviest one. The versatile songwriting and structures and the raw instrumentals make this their strongest album.
    SpielenBlood on Your Hands

The Damned - The Black Album (1980)
The Damned were the first uk punkband ever to release a single, an album as well as touring the US. Their first three albums are punkrock classics with hits such as SpielenNeat Neat Neat, SpielenSmash It Up and SpielenNew Rose. Their 1980 "black" album features the Damned in their most psychadelic period before becoming a goth -band. An incredibly interesting album with 12 tracks, partly beeing connected what makes up one big work, ending in the 17 Minute epic Curtain Call. Can't dare to skip a single track on it.
Play: Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde

    Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones (1983)
Theres no real genre you could put Tom Waits in - basicly its kind of Blues / Jazz / Rock using unusual instruments like Marimbas etc and featuring his incredible raw voice. The trilogy of Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years and Swordfishtrombones are Toms best known and most appreciated albums but his output has a constant high level so it is hard to pick a single album out of it. My choice was Swordfishtrombones(followed by Bone Machine) because it has the most atmospheric feel in it and barely leaves my stereo.
    Play: Spielen16 Shells From A 30.6

Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros - Global a Go-go (2001)
Basicly the second album by The Clash former frontman Joe Strummer with his band The Mescaleros has many aspects that his old band was famous for - a wild mix of styles and genres. But this album brings this approach to the maximum: its a musical journey round the world featuring folk rock, world music(Bhindi Bagee), Reggae, oriental sounds etc etc. Opens up your mind!
    Play: Johnny Appleseed

The Beatles - The White Album (1968)
Everybody knows the Beatles - but they surely had more to show than the overplayed Let It Be, Yesterday and Yellow Submarine. With Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band they released their most psychadelic album which got voted for the best album ever by the Rolling Stone magazine. The follow-up was The White Album: a double album featuring some of the most beautiful sons The Beatles have ever written, along with classic rock'n'roll bits, along with weird and experimental stuff.
Probably their most versatile album and in my opinion their best.
Play: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967)
The first album by Pink Floyd is the only one that was mostly written by the genious of Syd Barrett before he got replaced by David Gilmour. The sound is raw and psychadelic as well as somehow childish with lots of interesting harmonies and noises. A classic.
    Play: Astronomy Domine

    further listening:

    Gorillaz - Demon Days
Hip Hop / Pop combination featuring many great guest stars by Blur mastermind Damon Albarn.

Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
The most creative Hardcorepunk -album i ever came across.

    Beck - Odelay
    Speaking of creativity...

The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious
Raw and wild garagerock from sweden. I like their works before reaching the mainstream.

    Madness - One Step Beyond
    The definitive Ska-album.

Monster - Gone Gone Gone--A Bash Dem
Soul / Punk / Indie combined to a unique record. Singer is now famous as Moneybrother If you dig the Clash, try this.

So much for the moment, happy listening

  • Tuesday Ten: Tracks of the Month (November)

    1. Dez. 2009, 12:20 von amodelofcontrol

This month's ten tracks I think you should hear.

    The Big Pink
    Crystal Visions
    A Brief History of Love

It took me a while to get into this, and somehow I'd missed Dominos for some time (I missed the hype entirely, and instead was able to come to the band on my own terms). The album is rather less immediate than the single, though, and is all the better for it. This is the opener, and a beautiful, shimmering guitar chord and a rumbling bassline form the backbone of the track that occasionally comes up for air from it's otherwise shoegaze-y feel. It's also clear why Robbie Furze has barely mentioned the link to his previous band, too - this is a few star systems away from Panic DHH, but they apparently retain a little of the extremities live...

    Imminent
    Bock
    Cask Strength

Olivier Moreau, welcome back. Ten years since the release of Nord, Imminent are back with an absolutely astounding display of rhythmic industrial noise. Really, the whole album is brilliant, with no filler whatsoever over it's hour-plus running time. Probably my favourite track so far is the pounding electronic whirlwind that is Bock, which seems to suck in noise from around it as it goes along with a core of heavy, heavy beats holding everything together. It should also be noted that for a rhythmic album such as this, it's a surprisingly listenable album, too - it ain't just for dancefloors.

    In Strict Confidence
    My Despair (Slowdive)
    My Despair CDM

Long-awaited - like, a year later than intended, it appears - but at least worth the wait, as is so often the case with this unusual and unique band. The single itself is as you'd expect from ISC nowadays - it's beautifully constructed sonic art, but the single version at least seems to be missing something. Of the five different versions on the CD (there are two other new tracks too), this "Slowdive" variant is the pick - removing the club beats and turning it into a delicate ballad makes the track work much, much better.

    I:Scintilla
    Ammunition
    Prey On You EP

It's going to be fun to guess which way I:Scintilla are going to head with their new (forthcoming) album, going on the evidence of the three new songs featured on this EP. All three are vastly different in style, and the pick for me of the three is the second one - a near speed metal beat and chugging guitar riff, and Brittany Bindrim's vocals soaring over the top (in probably her best vocal performance yet). By showing off the variety of styles they can do, they are doing an amazing job of refusing to be pigeonholed, so let's hope they can keep up the quality level for the whole of the new album too...

    Velvet Acid Christ
    Black Rainbows
    The Art of Breaking Apart

After the really quite poor Lust For Blood, it's something of a pleasant surprise to be enjoying the new VAC release so much. For half of it, it's what you'd expect - trippy dancefloor industrial of the style VAC have been releasing for years (and not to mention an impressive reworking of SpielenPhucking Phreak, although I'm not exactly sure why that was necessary) - but it's the other half of this album that is something of an almighty shock. This track was the first to break cover from the album, on Septic VIII, and it's extraordinary. It's VAC stripped down to subtle beats and an acoustic guitar (!), and Bryan's vocals stripped of all treatment, resulting in a pretty song that works very well indeed. Who'd have thunk it?

    v01d
    SpielenGods Look Down
This is Not a False Alarm Anymore

Another long-awaited, and most welcome release, I'd almost given up hope that this album was ever going to arrive. v01d first came to my attention on a couple of the Cyanotic/Glitch Mode-led compilations a few years ago, and the astonishingly intense tracks on those appeared to map out a positive future. So it's a bit of a surprise to see a much more mellow direction, in the main, followed here. This track is a case in point - pretty much blissed-out hip-hop, to all intents and purposes, with shuffling beats and distorted vocals running the show.

    Slayer
    Not Of This God
    World Painted Blood

It may not be vintage Slayer, this album as a whole, but it certainly has it's moments. And in particular the rampaging closing track, which coupled with the usual Kerry King lyrical target of organised religion, really does borrow somewhat from a few Slayer classics. As a four-minute reminder of (musically) why we love Slayer, though, it's unstoppable.

    Nile
    Kafir!
    Those Whom The Gods Detest

A new Nile album is always welcome, not least as the band are a damned sight more interesting than some of their peers. Part of that is down to their main lyrical influence, of course - the well researched lyrics and themes of Egyptology and on occasions the wider ancient world, particularly with the return of the highly-detailed and entertaining liner notes this time around, help to keep things interesting. This opening track from the album is a fascinating one, too: the title in Islam means "concealer of the truth" (or, in other words, non-believer), and the lyrics are inspired by the fight against religion for centuries by the Afghan peoples in Nuristan (what was Kafiristan previously). As is often the case with Nile, musically it's certainly not run-of-the-mill death metal - instead it builds an oppresive, black shadow over proceedings and arabic chanting also features, surprisingly seamlessly. And, needless to say, it is still crushingly heavy death metal too.

    My Dying Bride
    Failure
    Bring Me Victory EP

Two very different covers form the main reason, frankly, to purchase the new MDB EP (although the live version of SpielenVast Choirs is pretty damned good too). One of the covers is of folk standard Scarborough Fair (which works better than you might think), but the other is a near-perfect cover of a near-perfect choice of song. The original I put in my top ten tracks of the 90s only last week, and I feel no need to apologise for this appearing again. Aaron's voice doesn't need to ape Michael Gira - his deep, rich voice is easily a match for the track, and MDB have another ace up their sleeve in introducing the whole band later in the song for something of a tumultous conclusion compared to the original. Still, wow.

    Collide
    I Feel You
    These Eyes Before

I'd be lying if I said I liked all of this unexpected covers album - in particular, my intense dislike of Pink Floyd means that the two tracks of theirs covered do nothing for me at all - but there are some really, really interesting moments here. Creep is a choice that to start with seems to jar but settles into a nice groove, but it is their cover of a Depeche Mode classic where the band sound the most comfortable with the material. Indeed, they don't do a lot with the original, but then, the original track is so good they perhaps didn't need to...

  • É, eu curto...
