It’s evident enough alone, from the hordes of young girls with an unnecessary amount of navel showing, that French electro-pop rockers Phoenix have crossed over from the musician’s band of indie heroes to that hip-as-fuck pop band that Nova are probably flogging to pieces.

But first we must endure Miami Horror who provide nothing more than bland electro-pop with a four to the floor dance beat and a bunch of unmemorable melodies. ‘Don’t Be With Her’ sounds like they’ve been listening to far too many Prince records, namely ‘When Doves Cry’ while ‘Sometimes’ closes the set and is the most memorable thing by far.

The opening guitar-plunks of ‘Liztomania’ are soon heard from the darkness and deafening screams fill the room as the almost-tribal drums get virtually everyone bouncing. The six band members are instantly professional, delivering note for note, beat for beat, synth-stab for synth-stab with meticulous precision and ultimate gusto from each and every member. …

It was August 2009 Phoenix last visited our shores on the back of massively-embraced album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Of course the band has been infiltrating the international music scene now since the release of their debut record United and hit single ‘Too Young’ back in 2000 with every subsequent release attracting more and more attention of both hardcore music lovers and musicians alike. When albums Alphabetical (2004) andIt’s Never Been Like That (2006) dropped Phoenix experienced a rapidly growing crossover audience that ate up singles like ‘Everything Is Everything’, ‘Long Distance Call’ and ‘Consolation Prizes’ by the thousands. From there their profile grew, they became darlings of the biz – a musician’s band…

2009…most notable, musically, for giving me an album so perfect I am seriously considering calling it my favourite ever release, though I’m still undecided for now. Japanese music continues to enforce its way into my tastes, I’m starting to develop a hankering for it more than ever. I thought I’d rue the day I ever developed a liking for girlish J-pop but then I guess some miracles never cease to happen. So a good year for music overall then…still no 2005, but nothing ever will be. Just a footnote, any music video included is not a random choice, it’s there because I think it warrants attention, whether it’s due to artistic merit or the fact that it ties in well with the song’s themes and/or images that it creates. If it has hot Japanese chicks then that doesn’t hurt either.
