  • Dandelion Radio - February 2010 shows

    31. Jan. 2010, 19:31 von DandelionRadio

    Andrew Morrison:
The War Crimes are exclusive session guests for a second time on Andy's February show with three brand new songs. You'll also hear a classic John Peel session track by Boards of Canada from 1998, alongside new music such as Yeti Lane, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Boy Omega and Lucas Renney. The choicest unsigned cuts include The Spinoza State, FireFliers, The Horn The Hunt and A Dancing Beggar. Regular slots Scott's Funky Five Minutes and Teresa's Tasty Tips appear, as well as new feature Andy's MP3 Memory - selecting a favourite download from over a decade ago, when online music was in its infancy.

    Greg Healey:
Three hours in length, this month's show features a thumping good session by Rack and Ruin Records artist Chad Golda. This exclusive Dandelion Radio live session features re-workings of material from Chad's forthcoming Dance Sessions album. Add to this an exclusive taster from Northcape's soon to be released Captured from Static album and whole host of exciting new music from the worlds of net audio, independent music and creative commons, and you've got a show not to be missed.
From 8-bit to lo-fi, from glitchy electronica to drum and bass, with a serving of indie pop along the way, this show also features tracks from Professor Kliq, Fidelium, Angela Aux, Musetta and BitBasic to name but a handful of the artists featured. Woooo! (And I didn't lapse into metaphor once.)

    Jeff Grainger:
Three exclusive sessions make up the bulk of Jeff's two hour, February outing. the rain bonnets, their second, at last, gets to be heard along with two other absolute blinders. The much anticipated Truth about Frank and The Hausfrauen Experiment who bring us their own magnificent take on four Fall classics.
Elsewhere Dihedral gives us a dub exclusive, the excellent Owls Owls Owls Compilation 'Playing for the Owls' has its first (and certainly not last) spin of the year plus other first time outings come in the shape of Weedy Dave, Cutthroat Convention and Emma Webb amongst others.
Finally if none of the above floats your boat then a not-to-be-missed monologue from a Doctor Who obsessed three year old will definitely win you over (Cheers Son!)

    Marcelle:
Intoxicated 23 kilo heavy basses around the world

Whilst packing her record bags for her New York trip to a 'DJ Maxximus' of 23 kilo, Dutch deejay Marcelle manages to record another three hour show with lots of 'Crazy Rhythms', as one of her Look Back Bore Records (of February 1980) jangly states. She shows the different directions the dubstep scene is heading into, gets totally hysterical about a German promo 12-inch (Markus Müller!), and calms down with the wonderful dreamy folk of her New York friends Christy & Emily. Different generations of quirky electronic music get nicely played together and mixed (Cluster & Uské Orchestra) and at last a chimney sweeper gets the praise he deserves, thanks to the best reissue label of the moment, Mississippi Records. After nearly 180 minutes of cutting edginess and record sorting the important decision is made: the 'Drunken Bass' flies with Marcelle to New York.

    Mark Cunliffe:
We're into February and as we all gear up for Collop Monday* what can you expect from Cunliffe's slice of Dandelion?
Julia's got a B-Complex, what's the worst an insect can do? Beans on Toast is nutritional but he's not applying that to New Yorkers the nasty man. Parker's gone all Eddie Izzard on us and is asking, "Ou est le sange?" Chase & Status have been emerying a Magnum ... but wouldn't it melt? Blue Daisy's in need of some guitar maintenance and Kulcha Knox is trying to skank on one leg. Yellow Fever's self titled album gets a four track feature and the dust collectors have been captured in their live splendidness for a fabulous session. There you are, very far from a load of Collops ...

    *vegetarian alternatives are available

    Mark Whitby:
This month, the brilliant Spidersleg stops by with an exclusive session, while show favourites are queuing up with new material, including tracks from forthcoming albums by White Hills, Xiu Xiu, Sam Amidon and The Pocket Gods plus a remarkable one-off swept up from the cutting room floor of Marissa Nadler.

Elsewhere, we get a remarkable sonic titbit from Mr Peppermint and tasty morsels are tossed from the freshly heaving tables of Th' Parish, Butter Fingers and firm favourites' The Chasms, who test fly their new garage soul offshoot project The Wrong. All this, and Peel Back & Sniff delves back over thirty years to relive one of the most memorable Peel Session moments in history.

    Pete Jackson:
February's show has the usual mixture of the sublime (gnod, Fieldhead), the ridiculous (Shit Eagle I Fuck God) and everything in between.
Strawberry Whiplash resurrect a forgotten mode of transport, Nosferatu D2 mourn the passing of a favourite Christmas gift and there's the return of the Hardcore Holocaust with a double shot of Extra Hot Sauce. That should clear your passages!

    Rachael Neiman:
After taking a month off, 'The Rachael Neiman Experience' is back for an hour-long tour through the excellent new demos that have been piling up since November.
We have fantastic new tracks from the likes of Death to the Elephant, Pockets Filled With Matches, Peter Parker, Shrag, Hearts! Attack, Silence At Sea, Nature Set, Mascot Fight, Help Stamp Out Loneliness and many more!

    Rocker:
This month we present another packed three-hour show. There are new tracks from Standard Fare, the fallen leaves, Cinema Red And Blue, head transfusion, Midlake, David Tattersall, Best Coast, The Blanche Hudson Weekend, Gregory Webster, Connecticut Four, and Cats on Fire.
There's a whole slew of new releases from Bristol's big hitters - including Portishead, and Massive Attack; and new electronica from Larsp, Betoko, and Luke Abbott; also dubstep tracks from Shackleton vs. Invasion, Instra:mental remixed by Skream, and an amazing Joy Orbison remix of Four Tet. Meanwhile Popof takes on Depeche Mode, and The Flaming Lips and their friends Stardeath and White Dwarfs take on The Pink Floyd, with a little help from their friends Henry Rollins and Peaches.
This month's Peel's Big 45 is a soul classic from 1972, while this month's Educating Elizabeth is a Northern Soul anthem from the same era.
As well as little known acts, here's a little known fact: The first vocal heard on The Pink Floyd's best-selling 1973 LP "The Dark Side Of The Moon" says "I've been mad for fucking years".

    Yank Sizzler:
Well the snow is all ugly and dirty. It still gets dark too soon. And the Xmas bills are due, but rejoice fore The Yank Sizzler Show on Dandelion Radio is throwing a wonderful soiree that includes the best in soul, punk, electronica, shoegaze, indie, garage, high life and just some good ole rock n' roll from Abe Vigoda, Blue Daisy, The Mountain Goats, Sunset, Ty Segall, Mi & l'au, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and many other party guests. We also raise our glass to the fond memories of Vic Chestnutt and Jay Reatard. They were good gents gone too soon.

  • That 90s Show? / That 10s Show?

    30. Jan. 2010, 0:00 von idiotsdream

I'm sure this has been noticed and discussed by now. As we boldly march down this fresh, shiny new decade, it seems that we can't help repeat or regurgitate on times old.

The age of the 10s seems (or will seem) to be influenced by 90s music. 90s rave. 90s style and fashion. It's a manifestation that seems to last throughout the entire decade, and for each decade we enter, we seem to revisit an old one at the same time. It's known as a sort of 20 year revival rule.

It's happened before, of course, that's part of the reasoning for impulsively starting this journal.

In the 70s, we had the 50s, with perhaps the most obvious product placement of that being Happy Days.

In the 80s, we had Mod revival for a while, with 80s music impeaching itself on the 60s.

In the 90s, we rentered the age of boogie, especially through television. Not only did we have The Brady Bunch Movie:

    Or The Wonder Years:

    Or That 70s Show:

But we also had the more dark, gritty, 'scenic', to say, output of Boogie Nights:

As well as all this, this presented the most extreme vision of a culture clash: 90s, grunge, dank, dark, heavy, abrasive music and styles slammed into a bright, poppy, colourful, happy-go-lucky style of the 70s, with the language ("Square" or "hip", "groovy chick" or "rad") being hilarious to look at, in a not unironic way.

The 2000s were the births child of the 80s, once again. I think La Roux is maybe the most blatently obvious example of this genre, though that may be because it's still recent to their success. But there were other examples too. Left, right and centre, critics and the media were dubbing out the term 'electro', almost automatically. People were wanting their MTV, inspite of what fundamental differences there are between MTV now and in 1981.

Daft Punk are perhaps a pioneering success from this. What with the success and constant re-evalulating and analysis of Discovery in early 2001, I think, in particular, it was this album that spawned the stylish rediscovery of the 80s into the 00s. Now, you've got hundreds of acts spinning a 12" into our heads, acts like Peaches, Ladytron, The Knife, Goldfrapp, Röyksopp, Hot Chip, Cut Copy, Ladyhawke, Little Boots, Dragonette and many others, some of these acts having a certain DIY quality to their music.

A surprising source of this has actually came from hip-hop acts, be it that there was a scene they wanted to tap into in the laziest style or not. So be it. Probably the best example i can think of on top of my head would be SpielenStronger by Kanye West (and it's of no coincidence that that song samples SpielenHarder, Better, Faster, Stronger, i've noted that).

Undoubtedly, a large source of fondness for the 80s must be from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It introduced a type of culture and visual awareness to hundreds of thousands of youngsters, to a paradise of wonders that they could never have experienced, because of their age, it was a re-creation of all things that happened in America in the 80s, even if some of it wasn't exactly true, and it was slightly bent. It was a fantasy.

In some ways, certain things from the 80s refused to die.
SpielenBlue Monday never died out. Neither did the Toyota MR2. Digital clocks are more popular than ever now, though you could argue that was something from the tail end of the 70s.

On cue, I do wonder what the full extent of this 90s revivial will be like. It has begun in some ways already:

In one way, i'm looking forward to it. The 90s represented a lost decade of youth and innocence on my childhood, and all the memories i have of it are fuzzy, happy and niave. I used to sport hair that was so curly it warranted dreadlocks. And it would be fun in a party-type way if people started dressing like they did, circa 1992. Baggy clothes, big hair, noise rings, German military boots, those skirts you used to see on some hip-hop / dance albums around 1993 when they stopped halfway above your knee, and the strange, obsurdness of urban-talk, which Clueless attempted to cover about.

In another way though, it's kinda sad. Isn't it? I mean, I thought a little bit of it was. I'm one for always looking ahead to the future, never looking back, do something that's never been done by anyone before etc. And it's certainly not that that won't happen or be achieved through this decade, it's more just that it would make it more harder to give the 10s it's own individuality stamp. Each of the last 4 or 5 decade's has had enough creativity in itself to be memorable for it's own right, and if we keep repeating ourselves in time by going on an endless 20 year cycle loop, where will we find ourselves in 2030? What will the 2010s been remembered for? Will the good and the bad in this decade be recognized in references in future generations? This thought makes me very curious for the future. I'm excited and curious, but just a dash cautious as well.

I think i'll end this around about now, before i get too lost and ramble too much. I only originally started this post because of a 90s influenced picture i saw of Kelis, and it just inspired me from there. That was well over 115 minutes ago. Remarkably really.

Bring on the 10s, i say. I'll be interested to see what'll happen next.

  • Big Day Out, Melbourne 2010

    27. Jan. 2010, 9:34 von KarbonKid

Tue 26 Jan – Big Day Out 2010

Where to start? The crammed trains? Metro sucking as many balls as Connex? The long queues? The dead heat? Scrap all of that, I'll just start with the music.

The first band I managed to see was Karnivool. Honestly, I didn't care much for their first album despite all of the hype...for some reason it never clicked with me, but I'm willing to give it another chance because they put on an impressive show. You can ask me what songs they played but I can't give you any answers, I'd imagine most of the tracks came from the new album. They created a lot of energy around what appeared to be a very loyal set of fans. It's typical prog-rock, but that's by no means a bad thing...my only regret was not knowing any of the material. I'll be better prepared to judge them when I see them next time.

Mastodon followed on the Blue Stage. That's right, MASTO-FUCKING-DON! Crack The Skye was my favourite album of 2009, and in my opinion...their best record. Unfortunately, issues with Brent's vocals had a big impact on the quality of their performance. I'm not entirely sure what was wrong with him, but he was incredibly difficult to hear. On a more positive note, the instruments sounded a lot better. From what I remember, they only played songs off the new album (feel free to correct me). I had hoped for something off Leviathan but considering I'm going to their sideshow on Thursday, I'm willing to forgive them. If you're a big fan and can't make it to their solo show, then I can completely understand if you were disappointed. They didn't speak to the crowd until the very end, they didn't play any of their old material and like I mentioned earlier, Brent's voice didn't sound particularly good. I adore the new album, and I was pleasantly surprised that they decided to fit in The Last Baron for their closing song, but some more variety would have been appreciated. It was all very predictable really. The sideshow WILL be better and I would encourage any Mastodon fan to grab a ticket. Definitely not the worst festival performance I've seen, but there were better acts on the day.

I tilted my head and looked back towards the Orange Stage. Kasabian drew an impressive crowd and gave a near perfect festival performance. They've had a somewhat shaky history, their self-titled debut is a joyous listen but Empire still sounds like shit. West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum changed everything, it was one of the best albums of 2009. Their set consisted mainly of songs from the aforementioned album, along with Empire and Shoot The Runner. An iconic song of the 'naughties' was an expected crowd pleaser; Club Foot. But songs alone won't create a brilliant live show, it's the way Tom interacts with the crowd. He comes across as being a typically cocky Manchurian (did I get that right?), but nobody cares because he single handedly lifted the fans. When they erupted with Fire (excuse the pun), EVERYBODY jumped with them. They energy level had suddenly gone sky high. Chemistry, catchy tunes and a crowd pleasing frontman make for a great show. Quite possibly the highlight of the day.

Bear with me because after Kasabian I skipped around a little bit. Next up on the Green Stage was The Decemberists. Like Karnivool earlier, I really didn't know what to expect here. I've heard a lot praise for this band and figured they might be worth checking out. Apparently this tour was their first visit to Australia and they looked genuinely pleased to be here. A dedicated bunch of fans gathered towards the front of the stage as they played out a mix of up-tempo folk along with some more relaxed melodies. Not much else to say really.

With ten minutes left in The Decemberists set, I strolled over to Converse Essential for The Horrors. I knew two things about them; A) Chris Cunningham, of whom I'm a great admirer, directed one of their videos, and B) Trent Reznor spoke highly of their new album. Oddly enough they dress almost entirely in black, despite the scorching heat. The lead singer reminded me of Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), not in looks but in vocals. Out of all the new bands I saw, were by far the most interesting. Imagine if Joy Division, Bauhaus and Nine Inch Nails were put into a blender...the end result is The Horrors.

The second half of the day was mainly spent around the main stages. Lily Allen arrived at 5.30. She was rubbish. Uninspiring and uninteresting cockney mumbling between songs further proved that she isn't very talented, very pretty....just not that creative. From what I managed to make out of her jargon, she had gastro. I was almost tempted to let her get away with that excuse until she started talking politics. The highlight of her set was when the drunk guy beside me shouted; ''Shut up slut and sing us a fucking song!''. Sorry Lily, but nobody cares what you have to say. Worst performance of the day.

Then along came a little band known as The Mars Volta. I wasn't very excited about seeing TMV at a festival, anyone who has seen their solo show will know why. When I saw the play back in 2008, their show lasted almost three hours, tracks blended seamlessly into one another, and Bedlam In Goliath provided some real 'open mouth in awe' moments. TMV at a festival is like watching the trailer for Avatar, you get the sense that seeing the full thing could potentially be epic (god I hate that word). They sounded good and Cedric was as brilliant as ever, but you can't fully appreciate TMV with a sixty minute set. At one point Cedric went jumped down from the stage to swap places with a security guard, this was during a fifteen minute track that was the closest thing we got to a full helping of Volta. They certainly got the crowd moving, but they need to be seen at a smaller venue.

After 7.30 there really wasn't a whole lot happening at Flemington. I went to take a look at Peaches after finally realising she wasn't playing in the Boiler Room (silly me). I didn't stay for very long but what I did see was a lot of dancing ladies and crazy costumes. She's a very energetic lady, who probably has some mental issues. It was interesting to see her comparing herself to Jesus, and walking (yes, walking) across the mosh pit. She started singing about shaking her tits and I felt left out, so I went back to see the headliner...

Muse hit the Blue Stage soon after. Their live show is quite the spectacle but I need to make something very clear, The Resistance is a fucking disgrace. They drifted towards a more commercial sound with BH&R, but the new album is close to a pop record. I've been a Muse fan since Origin was released, their peak years were between that album and Absolution...since then it's been all downhill. Fortunately, they stay true to their roots during the live show. Plug In Baby, New Born, Time Is Running Out; this is the Muse that I love. Obviously there were tracks off the new album which I refused to clap for. If you've seen Muse on a big stage before then you'll know what to expect, lots of big screen images and shiny green lasers. It's all very over elaborate but it unquestionably makes it one of the most impressive festival stages around. Shorty after they had started, a young gentleman decided to climb the canopy in the drinking section and received many a plastic bottle to the face. He gained quite a following, especially when he sidestepped the security guard. It was a full blown goose chase twenty feet from the ground and overlooking the lights from the Muse show. To whoever that was, I congratulate you sir. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Muuuuse. Like I said, they mixed plenty of old material with the new singles before inviting the lead singer from Jet (uuughhh) to play a song by AC/DC (uuughhh). I wasn't all that impressed by the cover to be honest, the remainder of the set was fairly solid though. Knights Of Cydonia was the finale and underlined something that nobody needed reminding of, Matt Bellamy is a very good guitarist. Few would argue that Muse, when playing songs pre-Resistance, are the most impressive three piece band in the world. The next album will pave the road for the remainder of their career, will it be more sci-fi-Queen-esque bullshit, or will they return to the Muse of old? I'm hoping for the latter. Either way, it was an enjoyable end to another sunny day at Flemington. I hope this shitty little review eases your sunburn. Until 2011...

  • Big Day Out 2010 in Auckland

    17. Jan. 2010, 13:05 von jdub_dub

On Friday 15 Jan I attended Big Day Out 2010 in Auckland.

This is only my second BDO ever, and this time I went armed with knowledge from my last one:
    - Food lines are terrible, so this time I brought along my own lunch and dinner. This saved at least an hour of my day.
    - Toilet lines are average, but usually there is one part of the stadium which is under-utilized (this time, it was the ones under the east stand).
    - If there is a huge line for one service somewhere else, it's likely there isn't somewhere else.
    - By default, I was very likely to stay seated in the same place for at least the last two sets of the night. I forced myself into the crowd instead this year.

The day overall went really well. The whole day progressed very smoothly, there were no big gaps of boring nobody artists, nor extreme peaks of amazingness. The weather was beautiful all day, although a little too hot and humid for some of it. I saw far too many bands - 28!!! - so this review is going to be huge.

Deja Voodoo started the day, these guys are funny.

Off to the boiler room, I caught a few songs of Cairo Knife Fight - very cool. They played an interesting progressive rock mix (from memory). I am excited that they were recently announced to support Them Crooked Vultures in New Zealand.

I then saw a bit of The Drab Doo Riffs - nothing particularly special about this band.

Back to the main stages, I realised that The Checks haven't really changed much - they still play the same type of rock music, which isn't quite my thing (too simplistic and boring).

Then off back to the local stages. A lot of my friends had raved about The Temper Trap. I can see why they are so popular, but their live show just didn't seem to work well in an open venue. As an indie band they would probably be better in smaller, cosy venues. I also find it hard to enjoy male-fronted indie music with soft vocals.

However, at the same time I found O'LOVELY on the homegrown stage. Not many people were watching, however I enjoyed them! They were a kind of female-fronted indie band with touches of Bang! Bang! Eche!. They aren't very tight yet, but this band has big potential I think.

At 1pm, I went off to see my first must-see band of the day - Farmer Pimp. I got there just in time to enjoy their introduction, and I really enjoyed their short set. The weather was absolutely brutal and I got pretty sunburnt, but my memories of them playing awesome trip hop were accurate. They seem to be a NZ version of Sneaker Pimps - I wonder if the name is any reference.

Once they finished their set, I went to see my second must-see band of the day - Dimmer. I went hoping they would play another crazy, dreamy set of beautiful music, but instead they played rock music. And they are pretty average rockers.

So, I went to check out the metal band Mastodon and hide from the heat in the open shade of the stands. It might have been that I was very far away from their stage, as they sounded pretty bad. But they got quite a lot of moshing and even a couple of circles going, although nothing seemed to particularly stand out.

After they finished their set, Midnight Youth came on. Nothing particularly memorable about these rockers, but once again, it might have been due to the poor sound where I was seated.

I went to check out Concord Dawn (DJ set) briefly. I saw them first ages ago back when they were only one person, and I don't think they have changed at all (in fact, aren't they separated now?). But the boiler room really enjoyed them, and they did play their DJ electronica well.

After cooling down, I went back into the boiler room to see my third must-see - Minuit. They were excellent, with lead singer Ruth being really gorgeous and sexy. Their last song was particularly memorable (it seemed to be about New Zealand?), and I must get a copy of their latest album. No wonder they are world famous in Europe.

I stayed for the entire set of Minuit, onto Girl Talk, which I had also heard many good things about. This was also a lot of fun and the crowd really enjoyed them! They took random people from the crowd and got them to dance on-stage during their set. I can totally imagine them going off in small venues, but I was getting restless (not to mention drenched) so I went to soak in the misting tent for a bit.

We all needed a bit of a seated break, so we got some really excellent seats in the west stand to see Kora. I got to eat cheese sandwiches while watching Kora! These guys are still as good as they were the first time I saw them at Homegrown. As expected, the crowd went absolutely crazy towards the end of their set.

We went back to the boiler room so I could watch Peaches. What a crazy, interesting woman she is! For her introduction, she was covered in seaweed (or something similar). Removing this, she then revealed a suit of body armor for her next song. I won't go into the rest of the show, but it was extremely amusing and a little disconcerting. I lasted five songs, but had a really good time at the same time.

We then went to get some drinks, and caught a few songs of Powderfinger. The easiest way to describe this band is that they are an Australian clone of The Feelers - so they were good live! But not the kind of music I'd listen to by myself.

We finished the Powderfinger set and then watched the introduction of Dizzee Rascal. Sadly we were all the way in the back of the stands, but I could tell that the entire stadium were enjoying themselves immensely. The surge of people that entered just before he started was impressive. I had only ever heard one of his songs before, but he's a pretty awesome rapper with good hooks.

I didn't stay for the whole set, as I went to check out The Decemberists, an indie band that I had enjoyed a few years ago. They had a very loyal group of fans supporting them, but I think they would be better suited in a smaller closed venue as well. decesses2's journal entry discusses it well :)

I checked out Lord Of Tigers briefly, and for the one or two songs I caught, they were alright.

I then checked out Devendra Banhart, but was not impressed at all.

I went back to the boiler tent, and checked out the start of Calvin Harris, as I had heard good things about him as well, but had never heard of him until the day before BDO. Very interesting - sort of a mix between a DJ and a male-fronted rock set with female support. I think I also need to hear more of his stuff.

Went back to the homegrown stage and saw Kidz in Space. These guys were pretty cool, a NZ rap duo with a third person acting as DJ. They had a good attitude and good stage presence, and had some pretty cool songs. I think they have very good potential as well, and I need to find a copy of their EP.

Went back to the Green Stage to check out Rise Against. These guys were good, but I thought the sound was pretty poor - it was far too quiet for a punk band. (I was pretty close as well!) They had a huge reception though, and I think I need to listen to more of their stuff as well.

I then checked out the second half of Lily Allen. I didn't like her before I went to BDO even though I knew nothing about her, but that attitude quickly changed after just a few songs. I didn't realise she was such an alcoholic :P. The entire crowd sung along for so many songs, and had a great time! At this stage, I was looking for a place to sit down for Muse, but the West Stage was pretty much packed. So I decided to try and get close to the front (but carrying a bag meant I couldn't get into the D ring).

The Mars Volta then came on. I really enjoyed their entire set, though I am a big fan of progressive technical rock or metal. As I was in the Muse side of the stadium, I could feel the crowd getting agitated at the length of the Mars Volta songs, and also their craziness. Muahaha :D

Finally, the build-up for headliner Muse could begin. I was stuck in the middle of a fairly large crowd waiting for the show to begin.

Muse were, once again, excellent live. Being down on the floor was a very pleasant experience, and I wasn't crushed by any waves of inconsiderate people (except for one). They had a wicked light show, complete with awesome & powerful lasers and gas canisters at the end of the encore. They had three LCD panels behind themselves, and they used these as digital projectors to great effect. At three points during their set, the light show was so crazy and the music so powerful, that I felt a powerful sense of amazement wash over me.

After Muse, I battled the exit crowds to try and catch half of the Fear Factory set. I didn't really know what to expect, because I don't really like their recorded stuff - the synthy effects on the vocals aren't really my thing. But holy crap, these guys are brutal live! The sound was absolutely excellent and everybody there was having an awesome time. I saw so many happy metallers just moshing out. There were half a dozen cops watching the crowd, probably because they're not used to how metal works :P

The last band I wanted to see at BDO, I tried to catch 30 minutes of Groove Armada. I only managed to catch one song of Groove Armada, SpielenSuperstylin'. Playing live, they had at least a bass player, a drummer, a horn, a singer and a DJ. It seemed they finished 20 minutes early for some reason - perhaps because the boiler room was absolutely BOILING. But of the one song that I did see, it was an amazing experience. I was right at the back of the room, and the lasers and lights were awesome. I can only imagine how awesome it might be if I hadn't been sober!

So I went back to see the end of Fear Factory. The most excellent way to possibly end a huge day of music. The $10 bus ride home was pleasant, and boy I was happy to have a shower.

    Highlights of the Day
Farmer Pimp were absolutely awesome (to me, at least - I seem to have a soft spot for trip hop).
Minuit played some really good music, and Ruth was so sexy!
O'LOVELY was the best band that I had never heard of before BDO.
Fear Factory was the perfect end to the evening.

    Disappointments
I was disappointed about the set that Dimmer had played.
I was also sad that I couldn't catch any of Head Like a Hole. I promise I will see you guys sometime! :(
I also found out at the end of BDO that Karnivool are apparently awesome, and I missed them. Oh well, I always manage to miss at least two good artists at every festival.

Next time I need to not bring in a bag, and put on sunscreen!
