This mix is by no means an end of year round up, but it's certainly preoccupied with one of the emerging sounds of 2008. Hip-tronica, wonky, aqua crunk... whatever you want to call it there's no denying the momentum is with the off kilter/post Dilla knob twiddlers.

Names like Hudson Mohawke, Rustie and Flying Lotus have been reverberating around the blog-sphere all year. And with 2009 seeing debut long players for the aforementioned Hud Mo and Rustie interest is only set to intensify.

Whilst journalists wrestle with what to call this movement L.A's dublab seems to have a good take on things. 'Future Roots Music' essentially describes any music taking inspiration from the past to look into the future.

It's from that perspective that the near-future mega-tropolis of Infinity City was conceived. A place of optimism, universal humanism and heavy beats!

With a track by underrated producer Omid, Can You Find... is perhaps the quintessential Freestyle Fellowship track. Usually Aceyalone and Myka 9 are cited as the lyrical leaders of the group. Perhaps because amongst lyric admirers they represent something closer to the 'pure lyricism' aesthetic, meaning they don't go street level so much with their shit but keep it ethereal. While both P.E.A.C.E. and Self Jupiter tend to provide the reminders that the fellowship are not just underground MC's but LA underground. But on this track everyone shines in a middle ground of ego brag and boast and hyper lyrical craziness.

Chris Schlarb is leaving Section IV open for your remix interpretations. The song is from his upcoming Twilight and Ghost Stories album, waiting to be released on December 4 through Asthmatic Kitty. The remix project is called Twilight Variations, and the song can be downloaded as WAV files or Garageband 3 file with all the arranged parts.

“With Twilight Variations I’m opening up Section IV so that anyone can pick it apart piece by piece, re-arrange it or add their own instrumentation. The beauty of this is that it allows for a deeper cross-section of what went into Twilight: things that were faded out, obscured or inaudible are now clearly presented for all who care to hear.
