Nice rendering of this song. Still like the 'original' cut/performers better. But still, a very nice song.

Eddie Carswell of NewSong tells us the story behind perhaps the most polarizing Christmas song of all time, "The Christmas Shoes." Carswell also discusses his new worship project, Swallow the Ocean, and the long-running Winter Jam festival, which promises to serve up "10 bands for 10 bucks." Bargain...: http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/eddie_carswell_of_newsong/

The song & the movie are based on a novel by Donna Vanliere, so don't blame everything on religion... reading some of the comments below made me realize there are lots of ignorant & sick people out there...

God gave a woman cancer so that her son could teach some random dude what Christmas is all about (commercialism, apparently). While his mom is on her dying breath, he is out buying shit for her. He's counting out change at a time when he could be by her bedside. Fucking damn, this is a terrible song. Putting together a contrived sob story that has no meaning but you need to get your mom crap for Christmas before she dies.

johnegbert, the child's religion is irrelevant. This song is emotionally manipulative and full of unfortunate implications, and the music itself is atrocious. If someone's mother is dying, they should be spending time with her instead of going shoe shopping. She's not going to need shoes once she's dead.

Probably the worst Christmas song. Nothing but depression. So, a kid buys shoes for his dying mother, and the message is supposed to be the narrator learning about the spirit of Christmas? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq10bz3PxyY

I don't care if you're not Christian. You don't NEED to be Christian to appreciate this song. It tells a story. Are you telling me, if a little boy was in front of you in line at a store and told you he wanted to buy those shoes because his mom was going to see Jesus, that you would turn your nose up at him once you realized "Oh, he's just one of those brainwashed little Christian kids"? Because believe me, if I was in line behind you, you'd get a nice smack in the head.

There are 2 songs that just grab my attention when they come on the radio. I Want To Hold Your Hand and this one, The Christmas Shoes. Not only because the overall mood of the song but because of the fact that a mom's son wanted to repay her for all the Chrstmases she did without getting Chrsitmas presents. A perfect example of honor thy mother and thy father. Remember, there have also been other Christmas songs with sad lyrics such as Dan Fogelberg's Another Auld Lang Sygne. And also, not everybody's Christmases are merry all the time. Back in 1998 our family had a mother that was passing away.

I'm really glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't like this song. It's just painfully generic, and seeing everyone gushing over how sad it is just makes it worse. I change the radio station if it comes on.

This is easily the worst Christmas song of all time. It's so calculated that it might as well have been created by a focus group.

...also, those who are Christian are not so concerned about death. The Christian Mom will be aware of her son's efforts from Heaven, and the child knows she's going to Jesus. Ah! what freedom for the believer!

great to see this song inspires pronounced feelings, SUCCESS!!! those against it, go back to listening frivolous songs only {about Santa, Rudolph and Jack Frost}.
