つい最近 オススメ!と言われて紹介してもらったのがニールヤングでした。 Only love can break your heart

Kwintesencja prostego rockowania na wielkim poziomie. Kilka chwytów, proste, bezpośrednie teksty, bardzo skromne możliwości wykonawcze, a klasa niesamowita.

Oops, I forgot to mention Everybody's Rockin' in my big '80s shout below, but I love that album too. Geffen didn't let Neil & Co. record the two best songs (Get Gone, Don't Take Your Love Away from Me), which would've pushed the album up quite a ways. But even incomplete as it is, the thing's a delight if you listen in. It doesn't matter how hammy Neil gets, an original Young composition is an original Young composition, and his voice was still in amazing, fully expressive shape at that point.

As for Freedom, I agree that it belongs in spirit with the '90s run. I haven't spent enough time with This Note's for You to comment - my last truly unexplored Neil record.

    März 2014
  • TheUselessGolem

Hawks & Doves is my favorite of the '80s batch (On the Beach-worthy acoustic gems on Side A, trashy throwaway Neil at his best on Side B), but 2nd place is a toss-up. Reactor has great attitude and Horse but Neil sounds somewhat out of it. Trans is fucking brilliant but the wonderful electronic songs don't sit so well with the (also wonderful) Island in the Sun tracks. Old Ways has nothing but excellent songs (Misfits!) and is probably my favorite of Neil's acoustic albums but it feels occasionally disjointed: the different moods jostle each other around a bit too much, perhaps. Life also has exemplary songwriting, but an opposite problem: all the songs are shades of the same color, which makes a full listen through less engaging than Neil's mix-&-match best. I think my vote would go to Landing on Water, actually. The sound is apeshit crazy, accidental brilliance, '80s turned inside out, sounding more like the 2080s. Plus ten kickass songs and barely-contained fury all over the place.

There absolutely is some gold in his 80s output. Trans is great.

  • Kdo_Kenoute

There is plenty of good stuff in his 80s output. I actually like all of the albums in some way or other. Aside from perhaps Landing on Water (and even that one has Touch the Night and Hippie Dream) also 'side 2' of Hawks and Doves grates on me a bit. Old Ways is my favourite. I kind of consider Freedom to be part of the 'comeback' 90s albums. The 'genre experiments' were behind him by that point. Wow! Inverted commas overload there.

  • licoricepizza

I can see how, at the time, his run of eclectic '80s albums may have lost some of his original fanbase. But if you were open to hearing his takes on electronica/rockabilly/blues, there IS some gold among that particular output of music.

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian singer-songwriter who is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation. Young was born in Toronto, but moved to the family home of Winnipeg as a child, which is where his music career began. Young began performing as a solo artist in Canada in 1960, before moving to California in 1966, where he co-founded the band Buffalo Springfield along with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, and later joined Crosby, Stills & Nash as a fourth member in 1969 (forming Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young).

Not as closely as the rest of his discog, but enough to make a valid opinion. Each one has a different reason why it doesn't work: Too unoriginal, too rushed, or just plain boring. It seems like he was searching for the next big thing, and by trying everything, nothing works

Ah, but how closely have you listened to the '80s? The studio albums were less reliably awesome than in the '70s, true, and lots of fantastic songs went unreleased, but the songwriting and live shows were just as good. Neil is happily aware of that himself, as per Shakey.

I've always been a huge Neil fan, although it's a touch and go love, only able to listen or a couple of days. This last week though, I've rediscovered my love for a good chunk of his discography (the '80s never happened in my opinion, maybe except freedom). Anyways, my love for Neil runs deep. My favorite album would prolly have to be Zuma, pretty much for Dangerbird and Cortez the Killer (the best Neil song ever, IMO)

Neil was as great a songwriter in the '80s as in the '70s. Amazing - between record label trouble, family problems, '80s studio shit and Neil's commitment to the live arena - how hidden that history is.
