I've had a long list of artists I need to listen to or need to listen to more of sometime for some time now and felt I should put it up on Last.fm incase anyone is willing to suggest me tracks or albums for the listed artists. • Nightwish/Sonata connections

    19. Nov. 2009, 19:01 von os_teriyaki

    (14 days and counting!! :D)

I decided to while away the time by showing you all how ridiculously centralised my music is. The vast majority of what I listen to is connected in some way to Nightwish or Sonata Arctica, my two favourite bands who just happen to be best buddies, apparently. To illustrate this fact, here's a list of the artists I currently have queued up on my playlist and how they're connected to Nightwish or Sonata.

Alyson Avenue - Anette Olzon was the vocalist
Brother Firetribe - Emppu Vuorinen is the guitarist (or one of, they may have two, idk) and Anette guested on one of their songs
    Deadlock - no connection.
Delain - supporting Sonata Arctica on their current tour, and Marco Hietala guested on many of their songs
Dir en grey - no connection.
Elias Viljanen - is also the current guitarist for Sonata, and Tony and Marco have both provided vocals for his solo project
Emppu Vuorinen - is obviously the guitarist for Nightwish
Finntroll - one of Finntroll's old vocalists, Tapio Wilska, guested on several Nightwish songs
Galneryus - no technical connection, although the sound is quite similar to Sonata
HIZAKI grace project - no technical connection, although three members are also in Versailles (see below)
Machinae Supremacy - no connection. Apart from being the same nationality as Anette xD
Marco Hietala - is also the current bassist and male vocalist in Nightwish
Martin Kesici feat. Tarja Turunen - Tarja was obviously the old vocalist of Nightwish
My Dying Bride - Tuomas Holopainen cites them as a major influence and a favourite band
    Nightwish - IS NIGHTWISH xD
Northern Kings - one vocalist is Marco of Nightwish and another is Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica
Pain - supported Nightwish on their latest European tour
Sonata Arctica - IS SONATA ARCTICA xD
Sydänpuu - vocals, guitars, bass and keys are all performed by Jani Liimatainen, Sonata Arctica's old guitarist
Tarot - Marco is the bassist and vocalist
Tarja - Nightwish's old singer, obviously
Tony Kakko - singer/songwriter/composer/clown/keyboardist/general genius of Sonata Arctica :D Has also guested on a couple of Nightwish songs
Versailles - no connection, although the sound is not too different from Nightwish and Sonata Arctica
Winterborn - supporting Sonata on their current tour
Zachary Hietala - brother of Mr Marco Hietala ;)

As you can see, I should really be less biased in my music xDD

  • Death_OfSeasons reviews stuff: My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours

    14. Nov. 2009, 19:30 von Death_OfSeasons

My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours

Death/Doom is a genre filled with dark and depressing bands. Full of emotional vocals, atmosphere and long songs, there's a lot to like about Death/Doom. Except for the fact that 99% of the bands in the genre just drag on and on. Seriously, why drag a five minute song into a ten minute "epic" by just repeating the same thing over and over again? Well thankfully My Dying Bride (well at least on this album) don't fall into the trap of repetition.

My Dying Bride formed in 1990. They are (well were) recognised as the leaders of Death/Doom along with Paradise Lost and Anathema. My Dying Bride released their debut album, the highly influential As The Flower Withers, in 1992. It was unique at the time for combining growls and Death Metal aspects with Doom Metal. Though they didn't really achieve their masterpiece (well according to most people) until 1993 with the release of Turn Loose The Swans. The album was a lot slower than As The Flower Withers and featured a greater use of clean vocals. The violins (provided by Martin Powell) were used to much greater effect aswell. Turn Loose The Swans is more or less the most important Death/Doom album in existence so for this alone My Dying Bride had become legends. However, this album, The Dreadful Hours is truely their best offering by far. Being released in 2001 it wasn't anywhere near as unique or groundbreaking as their previous offerings, but it finally perfected everything My Dying Bride had been working on in the past.

The album starts off with the title track, The Dreadful Hours. The album starts off with the sound of rain and a mournful, depressing guitar riff. Then Aaron Stainthorpe's clean vocals kick in. Stainthorpe has some of the best vocals you will find in Death/Doom. He may not have a perfect voice, and there are quite a few times on this album where he does sound out of tune, but his vocals carry such emotion. The clean vocals are soft in sound, but they have such a dark tone to them that you can't help but be moved. Eventually the song picks up the pace, well as much as Death/Doom can, and the drums come thundering in. The guitar gets heavy and the vocals swap to a death growl. His death growls may not be very much in terms of pure power (don't expect some Corpsegrinder action going on) but unlike the majority of Death Metal vocalists today he has a unique sound. Where as bands like Necrophagist, Fleshgod Apocalypse and countless other bands have the standard death growl that doesn't get across any true emotion, Stainthorpe's growled vocals are just as moving as his clean vocals.

The Raven And The Rose shows a different side of the band. Heavier in tone and filled with Death Metal sounding riffs, this is quite different from The Dreadful Hours. The growled vocals carry more power and aggression without losing meaning and emotion. The keyboards burst forth in a haunting matter during key parts of the song. Eventually the song clams down and the clean vocals come in. Never do these changes seem forced (Opeth anyone?) but natural. However, the dark sorrowful Death Metal sound returns soon with a fantastic riff.

The lyrics are chilling and depressing, classic My Dying Bride on display here. Many bands try to give you the feeling of pain and suffering, but very few succeed in the way My Dying Bride do. Consisting of cries for help, sorrow, suffering, mourning and every other feeling that involves hurt this is not Metal for those who want some happy upbeat Dragonforce cheese.

If I have one problem with this album it would be the song length. Both Le Figlie Della Tempesta and The Return To The Beautiful tend to drag towards the end. Though it's understandable seeing as very few songs can hold the momentum ten minutes into the track. Despite the drag, both of these songs (The Return To The Beautiful in particular) remain My Dying Bride classics.

If you're looking for a Metal album full of raw emotion and don't mind being depressed for the next couple days I highly recommend this album. Never before has Metal been so "beautiful".

  • Friday Twenty: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.02a: 160 to 141

    13. Nov. 2009, 16:11 von amodelofcontrol

    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.01a: 200 to 181
    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.01b: 180 to 161

Part two of my tracks of the 90s rundown: again split over two posts. The next forty will be posted on Tuesday.

    160
    Leonard Cohen
    SpielenThe Future
    The Future
    1992

Among the fair number of wildly inventive soundtracks released films released in the 90s was the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, put together by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and featuring a vast range of styles and artists - and not a single one felt out of place. Two of Cohen's songs were used on the soundtrack album (a third was used in the film), and this track in particular was pretty special. A musing on the pessimism of the world, and what is to come in light of what has already has happened, it's slightly cheesy synth lines and the big gospel chorus are brought together to make a song ostensibly about everything going to shit actually sound quite positive...

    159
    Converter
    SpielenConqueror
    Shock Front
    1999

The monstrous opening track from Converter's debut album, it's seething, near white noise intro gives way to massive, hulking beats, before another set presumably stomped out by AT-ATs obliterates all before it. This is dancefloor noise at it's finest.

    158
    Pop Will Eat Itself
    SpielenUrban Futuristic
    The Looks or the Lifestyle
    1992

The first inkling that the Poppies were angling for a heavier sound came from this industrial metal monster, and maybe the repeated refrain "no more Mr Nice Guy" just rammed home the point all the more. Everything about this song rules, and it also hasn't dated as badly as certain other Poppies tracks...

    157
    Covenant
    Stalker
    Sequencer:Beta
    1998

A while before they became bona-fide futurepop stars, earlier Covenant material was a whole lot darker. Brooding synths, less danceable beats, and an almost gothic delivery in the vocals. It's still recognisably Covenant, though, and if you got into later-period Covenant without ever going back, this whole album is worth a look.

    156
    Incubus
    SpielenNew Skin
    S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
    1997

Ah yes, back when Incubus weren't acoustic bores. Back when they were still a band full of their native california sunshine and funk metal…and were awesome fun. Particularly this track, a song about reinvention, and it simply teems with life.

    155
    Paradise Lost
    Enchantment
    Draconian Times
    1995

Interesting here in that I could have picked any number of PL songs from the mid-90s from this list, but hearing it live recently sealed the deal for it to be this. The epic, doomy power of this track for me makes it one of PL's very best songs, but it's not all growling and hate - it's beating melodic heart is what seals the deal.

    154
    Queen Adreena
    Cold Fish
    Taxidermy
    1999

The first QA song I ever heard, as I recall. It's still nuts, too. I've no idea what Katie-Jane Garside is on about during it, but it's bruising rock is a hell of a thrill, even if it is something of a tease with out only lasting two minutes or so.

    153
    Radiohead
    SpielenSubterranean Homesick Alien
    OK Computer
    1997

OK Computer has been analysed to death, befitting it's status as many critics view that it is the best album of the 90s. It's certainly an extraordinary album, vast in scope and frankly fearless in it's endless experimentation with their basic rock sound. My favourite track on the album, though, is this gorgeous track, sometimes forgotten in it's position in the shadow of SpielenParanoid Android. As guitars shoot across the sky like shooting stars, Thom Yorke muses on the idea of being abducted, how great it would be, and how no-one would ever believe him anyway. One of Radiohead's prettiest songs, and still somewhat underappreciated, in my view.

    152
    Sneaker Pimps
    Spielen6 Underground
    Becoming X
    1996

Part of the coffee-table craze for anything "trip-hop" related, in reality Sneaker Pimps were always a little more interesting than that (and perhaps were even more so once Chris Corner stepped out on his own as IAMX). This is the track that started it all, though, and it's slinky, after-dark feel (and Kelli's frankly heavenly vocal) is still great. There was no need for it and the rest of the album to be re-recorded, re-mixed and re-issued, though, and if anyone can help me with a copy of the original version (i.e. the one with the motherboard-style green and silver cover), please let me know...

    151
    Leftfield
    Inspection (Check One)
    Leftism
    1995

There is certainly a case for the album as a whole in a best of the 90s list, and certainly other tracks from this album could have made this list - however I had such a long list of possibles for this, that I decided to restrict it to one song per album (and two songs for certain artists at most). So the one from Leftism? This titanic, slower-paced track, that when played loud probably has more bass contained within than I've ever heard. The spacey, dubby vocal intro on the album version rules, too.

    150
    My Dying Bride
    SpielenThe Cry of Mankind
The Angel and the Dark River
    1995

We'll be here all day debating which MDB album is the best, but The Angel… puts in a convincing case. Not least for it's epic, twelve minute opener. It's yearning, bleak seesawing riff that opens it, the stately piano, the occasional vocals that break through, and that foghorn blaring out through the mist as the song descends into it's ambient second half...the whole thing is a glorious wallow in bleak misery (in other words, exactly what this band should be). I am astonished it has a video, though, even if it is only a third of the song.

    149
    Red Snapper
    Wesley Don't Surf
    Reeled and Skinned
    1995

I was never entirely sure where this lot were meant to fit in. Broadly a jazz band that used live instruments but filled in the gaps with electronic textures, their early singles were a fascinating mix of styles. Many of their earlier tracks were a rather more mellow, so the uptempo attack of this track was something of a change - and was by far the best of them.

    148
    The Verve
    SpielenBrainstorm Interlude
    A Northern Soul
    1995

While The Verve may be better known for their later albums and greater success, their earlier material remains intriguing. One track I've adored for years now has been this one - a reverb and feedback drenched jam that is one of the centrepieces of A Northern Soul. Rather than the naked emotion that much of the rest of the album gives away, this near-instrumental track (just try and work out the lyrics in the dense sound) gives nothing away and is perhaps all the better for it.

    147
    PJ Harvey
    SpielenLong Snake Moan
    To Bring You My Love
    1995

No two PJ Harvey albums are alike, which always results in some odd surprises each time around. To Bring You My Love, though, was still a bit of a shock. Much wider in sound than the previous albums, it's was still bluesy, but less raw (Flood being producer saw to that, I think). The swampy, blues-rock of this track, though, was possibly the most eye-catching on the album, and her almost screamed vocals as the song climaxes still sends chills through me.

    146
    Soundgarden
    SpielenLet Me Drown
    Superunknown
    1994

Never mind grunge, this was metal. The snarling opener to Soundgarden's most successful (and on balance, best) album, it's heavier, and thanks to the big-budget production, much…bigger than anything they had recorded to this point. Lyrically as dark in tone as the rest of the album, listening to it again for the first time in a while has reminded me that if I ever get asked the High Fidelity question of "five side one, track ones" again, this gets included.

    145
    Nitzer Ebb
    SpielenGetting Closer
    Showtime
    1990

Nitzer Ebb's third album was the first time that they really even moved beyond their EBM core, and the results were pretty impressive - not least in the awesome, steady build-up of opener Getting Closer, as the beat winds up from a standing start into a full-on industrial attack with what I see as their best vocal performance (as a live opener, this is incredible, too), before the sweeping, stabbing chords herald the mid-section, a breakdown, and then back to the chorus where it steps up again. Sod newer industrial, I'll take this every time.

    144
    Dub Pistols
    SpielenThere's Gonna Be a Riot
    Point Blank
    1998

What much of Barry Ashworth's material has concentrated on a more ska-based sound, this track was a roof-raising, dancefloor-slaying track that was something of an underground hit back in the days of "Big Beat" - I vividly recall this being played at The Heavenly Jukebox at Turnmills in '97 and sounding utterly immense.

    143
    Cold
    SpielenGo Away
    Cold
    1997

Originally "discovered" by Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, but honestly, don't let that put you off. Their first album was impressively dark, emotional metal, and the opening track's ominous rumble (everything is downtuned, resulting in a marvellously deep, fuzzy sound that the bright production only helps to accentuate) coupled with Scooter Ward's wracked, gritted teeth vocal delivery is a spectacular start that the rest of the album never quite lives up to.

    142
    Slint
    Good Morning, Captain
    Spiderland
    1991

Pretty much year zero for Post-rock as we know it, this band, and the album Spiderland has been feted to an incredible degree as a result. It fully deserves the praise, mind, but it's this stupendous closing track that takes the honours. Lyrically based around The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - if you can make out the muttered words - it's the use of quiet-LOUD dynamics that catches the ear, and as the track reaches it's climax, you realise that more than just post-rock owes this a debt.

    141
    Die Krupps
    SpielenIron Man
    II - The Final Option
    1993

They may be EBM pioneers, but their later industrial-metal hybrid phase produced some outstanding material, too. Including this, one of the ultimate tracks on the classic industrial music cliché of shedding human form for robotics. A monstrous, mechanised beat couples with equally mechanised guitars, and that whole cyborg idea gets better with every passing minute of this song.

  • Review: Night Is The New Day

    9. Nov. 2009, 23:12 von Apollyon_

Well well, where do we begin...

The expectation. I've been waiting for this album for at least two years. I'm sure the feeling was mutual for many others. And The Great Cold Distance is by no means an easy act to follow.

The hype. The album was built up, the down-loadable single, SpielenForsaker, the mini-site, the eventual track-listing, Mikael Akerfeltd's comments....

The eventual goods? For my humble opinion, read on.

Night Is the New Day - Tracklist
    1| SpielenForsaker
    2| SpielenThe Longest Year
    3| SpielenIdle Blood
    4| SpielenOnward Into Battle
    5| SpielenLiberation
    6| SpielenThe Promise of Deceit
    7| SpielenNephilim
    8| SpielenNew Night
    9| SpielenInheritance
10| SpielenDay and Then the Shade
    11| SpielenDeparter

    Track One - Forsaker
This was the first hint of what Katatonia had created on this album. Dark, pulsating and lively, this song is like SpielenMy Twin mixed with Dave Lombardo.
As we can expect from Katatonia, it's in one word 'majestic'. Great album opener, fantastic melody, melancholy, and really, what a great song! This song is right up there with other Katatonia album openers - SpielenLeaders, SpielenFor My Demons and so on, and it shows Katatonia are again an evolving, and at this point, rather angry beast. 9.5/10

Track Two - The Longest Year
They don't let us down. The Longest Year keeps up the high standards of the opening track, and again reminds me of a mix of the TGCD style, and a more personal, metallic sound that seems constant throughout the album. The chorus and bridge here are first rate. The lyrics again are of such a high standard. One of the best songs on the album for me. Would highly recommend. 9/10

    Track Three - Idle Blood
I may as well review the Damnation album by Opeth, because this is uncanny. Jonas sounds like his friend Mikael so much here I mistook them! Still, it's a pleasingly slow, melodic song, and it cools the album down after two fast (For Katatonia) and slick sounding songs. It's nice. 8/10

Track Four - Onward Into Battle
I'll start by saying a lot of songs on this album remind me of SpielenUnfurl. This is one of them, mainly because of Jonas's vocal delivery. That slow, saddened, thoughtful almost, voice is amazing. Some quite refreshing guitar riffs are present too. Great song, could well become a favourite. 7/10

    Track Five - Liberation
Another early favourite. Starts with the urban-esque beat found in Unfurl (again) in the background, but soon emerges as one of the heavier tracks on the album. The song breaks into heavy chopping riffs, and a pick up in tempo, but again, recedes. Picks up later, with a real feel of SpielenIncrease and SpielenThe Itch, among other TGCD songs. The lyrics are delivered well, and quickly by Jonas. Solid song. 7.5/10

Track Six - The Promise of Deceit
Interesting intro to the song - Jonas sings in a removed, echo like voice, soon breaking into more melodic singing. The song builds and builds, and as Jonas sings 'When did you come to think...' the song gets heavier. A pleasing chorus follows, and the song calms down somewhat, then builds again after a pause. The lyrics here are direct, and provoking. Despite the dark subject matters, you'll sing along. 7.5/10

    Track Seven - Nephilim
Possibly another early favourite. Nice intro, spellbinding vocals. Katatonia are really in their groove by now, and this is another hopeless, bleak, but amazing song. The chorus is delivered with a slow, crushing drum beat, with Jonas's long, emotive vocals soaring above the music. Interesting guitar as the end of the song nears keeps us in touch. 8/10

    Track Eight - New Night
Very much similar to TGCD era songs here. The rhythmic beat of the drums, and sad, laid back guitar work is a welcome hail-back to songs like SpielenJuly. The song is very finished, with the flourish of a keyboard piece in the background adding to the sound. The song stops and starts, going between building and heavy. With fear of repetition of myself, great lyrics. A song to be deciphered, and that will grow on me. 7.5/10

    Track Nine - Inheritance
Jonas is incredible here. His voice fades in and out of melancholic guitar, a slow beat played in the background by Liljekvist on the drums. The vocals pause for a small symphonic bridge, and the song is slightly faster as it moves on. Another pause, then the vocals rejoin us. A nice guitar riff is to be heard near the end too. A good calming pause as we leave several heavier, dynamic songs behind. 8/10

Track Ten - Day And Then The Shade
Another single in the making. Great melody here, the drums, guitar work and of course the vocals immediately grab our attention, with the tempo change after Inheritance obvious. As the chorus starts, the lyrics of the song 'Every waking hour...' are drilled into our minds. Overall, a fast, polished, very slick sounding song. And another one with very good delivery and lyrics. Great, great song. 9/10

    Track Eleven - Departer
When I first heard it I thought - this is Unfurl part two, more so than ever before on this album. A slow, ambient intro for around 40 seconds leads to thoughtful, sad vocals, complemented nicely by pleasing keyboard work. The song gains momentum, but is all just a stage for Jonas's vocals. The tempo changes again, and as Krister Linder (guest vocals on this song) sings:

    Brother
In your eyes I was the stronger

We realise we are being given such an emotional piece, and journey from this band. A fitting, introspective end to a fascinating album. A really fitting album closer. Perfect. 10/10.

-Remember to try bonus song Ashen -

All in all, this album is similar to The Great Cold Distance, but is not as well rounded, and does not contain the huge singles (July, My Twin...) of TGCD. This is rawer, but polished, and more refined. The album is hopeless, apathetic in places, but still has that unique, uplifting feel to it that, upon inspection, every Katatonia album has. To start with, try Forsaker or Day And Then The Shade. It will grow. Watch this space. This is a potentially huge album.

    Overall, a good initial 88/100
