Das im Jahr 2000 als Little Joe Gould gegründete Quintett aus Bloomington veröffentlichte 2001 seine erste, selbstbetitelte EP, die inzwischen vergriffen ist.
Nach der Veröffentlichung benannten die vier Musiker sich um in Murder by Death. Der seltsam anmutende Name ist Titel eines Films von 1976, der in Deutschland als „Eine Leiche zum Dessert“ übersetzt wurde.
Im Sommer 2002 veröffentlichten Murder by Death ihr erstes Album „Like the Exorcist But More Breakdancing“ auf dem Label Eyeball Records; nach kaum mehr als einem Jahr erschien auch schon das zweite Album „Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them?“.
Das dritte Album „In Bocca al Lupo“ erschien auf dem bandeigenen Label Tent Show Records und war insgesamt weniger postrockig und mehr songorientiert, was der Band auch zu einiger Beachtung außerhalb ihres Heimatlandes verhalf.
Das vierte Album der Band erscheint auf dem renommierten Label Vagrant Records.

Finch is amazing indeed; I think it may be my favorite of their records musically (which makes sense because they had to focus exclusively on channeling emotion and mood and even characters/objects through music alone) though my overall favorite is still In Bocca al Lupo, by far.

The Finch album is pretty awesome. If comparing it to any of their other albums, I'd say musically it's most like "Like The Exorcist...", but not exactly the same. I fuckin' love Turla's vocals, but it would be awesome if Murder By Death could do a score for a full-length movie, or something. They are well suited for it.
