Issaquah, Seattle WA, Vereinigte Staaten (1993 – aktuell)

Modest Mouse ist eine amerikanische Rock-Band. Sie wurde 1993 in Issaquah, Washington von Isaac Brock (Gesang, Gitarre), Jeremiah Green (Schlagzeug), und John Wickart (Bass) in einer Videothek gegründet. Der Name „Modest Mouse“ leitet sich ab von einem Buch, das Brock gelesen hatte, in dem die Angehörigen der unteren Mittelklasse als „modest, mouse-like people“ bezeichnet wurden (Virginia Woolf „The Mark on the Wall“ (Das Mal an der Wand)). Modest Mouse wollten von Anfang an keine Qualifizierung ihrer Musik und ließen sich nie mit anderen Bands vergleichen. Der Sound von Modest Mouse geht am ehesten in Richtung Pixies, Meat Puppets und Pavement. In der Anfangsphase der Band stieß noch Gitarrist Dann Gallucci zur Band, der jedoch bald wieder ausstieg und zur Band „Murder City Devils“ wechselte. Nach vielen Probeaufnahmen und Demos nahm die Band in Calvin Johnsons „Dub Narcotic Studios“ 1994 ihre Debut-EP auf. Sie erschein auf Johnsons „K Records“ Label mit dem Titel Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect? Die erste Single folgte mit „Broke“ 1996.

2004 hatte Modest Mouse einen Gastauftritt in der US-amerikanischen Teenie-Soap O.C. California (Staffel 2, Episode 7 „Familienbande“)

Der Label-Kampf

Durch die steigende Bekanntheit der Band entwickelte sich mit der Zeit ein kleiner Kampf der Labels und Plattenfirmen um die Band Modest Mouse.

Die Band wechselte darauf hin zum Up Records Label, auf dem sie 1996 This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About sowie die EP Interstate 8 veröffentlichen. Auf den ersten Blick wirkt dieser Sound konfus und ist nicht leicht zuzuordnen.

    it's been years since they toured europe and they never toured austria at all.. without wanting to offend american fans, they tour america every year and there's still people on this shoutbox saying "come to this or that place in the US please" .......... we are happy that the album is coming finally as well and I have calmed down a bit since yesterday... mainly there should be more understanding on both sides and this shouldn't (have) turn(ed) into an america vs europe war...

    Their album was suppose to come in 2012 I think? It has been years, and we are extremely happy, because he stopped giving odd answered about the album's release date. He said next year, so now I can stop suffering. I do have some sort of sympathy for the UK fans though, but this album needs to come out so we can all keep our sanity.

    i'm pretty shocked by the responses of american fans how happy they are that the european tour is cancelled and who cares about the european fans etc... this stuff is really ridiculous. i rather won't comment on Modest Mouse announcement regarding cancelling the tour... worst thing they could have done.
