  • My Record Collection (With Pictures!) - UPDATED 11/19/09

    12. Nov. 2009, 22:57 von laurienicole

I've been collecting records for the past eight years - since I was fifteen. I don't have a huge collection or anything but it's still fun to collect and play them. I mainly buy them at record stores in the New England area and online through Amazon and eBay.

I still have a ton of albums I want...I've been trying to buy The Madcap Laughs on eBay for the last couple weeks but no luck so far. :(
I actually just purchased a used copy of The Madcap Laughs on Amazon today! I'll update with that album when I get it! <3

    Pink Floyd - The Wall
I won this one on eBay. It's a Columbia Records promotional copy, and has a gold stamp on the back that says: "For Promotion Only. Ownership Reserved By CBS. Sale Is Unlawful."

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
Another recent eBay purchase! I know this isn't one of their most well-liked albums but I really enjoy it. I'm actually listening to it right now!) To be honest, I really don't understand why more people aren't into this album. Yeah, it's basically a Roger Waters solo album but I guess that doesn't bother me because I really like Roger Waters haha.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
This is the 30th anniversary reissue on 180-gram virgin vinyl, complete with posters and stickers! I currently have all three posters hanging in my room. :)

    Radiohead - The Bends
This one's also on 180-gram vinyl. And it just so happens to be my favorite Radiohead album!

TV on the Radio - Young Liars
I hate to say it but I don't think I've ever listened to this. I got it ages ago and I just never got around to hearing it. I'm sure I had a reason for buying it but the reason's evading me at the moment.

    Mice Parade - Obrigado Saudade
This is another one I haven't listened to a whole lot, but I remember really liking it when I did.

    The Clash - Combat Rock
    Reissue.

    The Clash - The Clash
    Another reissue.

The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope
    This one's an original.

Saves the Day - Stay What You Are
Like I said, I started collecting records when I was fifteen years old. Not that there's anything wrong with Saves The Day, but it's definitely more indicative of my musical taste several years ago.

Preston School of Industry - All This Sounds Gas
I bought this album because I liked the song "Whalebones" but I don't think I ever listened to the entire album. I swear, I do listen to some of these records!

    David Bowie - Stage
Like this one, for example! I love the version of "Station To Station" on this album.

    David Bowie - Young Americans
This may be the first David Bowie album I ever bought.

    David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Apparently this one used to be owned by someone named Sarah. I like how the way she wrote her name kind of matches with the look of the album cover.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
This one is a reissue on 180-gram virgin vinyl. It was bit pricey, but worth it!

    The Rolling Stones - AFTERMATH
One of the first albums I ever bought. There's some guy's address on the front and another guy's name written on the back. So this album has basically had at least three owners, I guess. That's why I love getting used records. I like owning something that has a little bit of history to it.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls
My favorite Stones album! I got this one used on Amazon.

The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue
I actually think this one might have belonged to my mom.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
    On 180-gram yellow vinyl.

    The Velvet Underground - Loaded
    On 180-gram red vinyl.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
    On 180-gram blue vinyl.

Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
I got this one used on Amazon.

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
I went through absolute hell to get this album. I bought it used on Amazon and I accidentally had it shipped to my college address (where I don't live anymore) instead of my home address. The college post office mistakenly returned it to the sender instead of forwarding it to me, so it went all the way back to Georgia and spent some time in a dead letter office before it finally got to me haha.

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
I bought this one used. The cover and the sleeve are a bit water-damaged but the record still plays wonderfully.

The Doors - The Doors Greatest Hits
I know, I know..."greatest hits albums are for housewives and little girls" lol. I got this one for my birthday this year.

The Get Up Kids - On A Wire
Great album art! And I still like the songs "Grunge Pig" and "All That I Know".

Hot Hot Heat - Knock Knock Knock
I got this one for my 17th birthday. I played the hell out of "5 Times Out Of 100". What a great song.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
The second album I ever owned.

    Ramones - Pleasant Dreams
I got this one for my birthday this year also.

    Ramones - Leave Home
The first album I ever owned. September 9th, 2001: the day I started collecting records!

Bright Eyes - Vinyl Box Set
The envy of Bright Eyes fans everywhere...the elusive vinyl box set. I got this back in the day when it cost next to nothing and now it sells for hundreds of dollars apparently. Think I'll hang on to this one...

    The Hollies - The Hollies
This one belonged to my mom. (I know it's wrong to keep the cellophane on the outside of the cover, but it's already been there for decades so I assume the damage is already done heh.)

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
I just got this one today! I tried to get this album for a couple of weeks but sadly I kept getting outbid. I guess it all worked out because if I'd won those auctions, I never would have gotten this album! What's so special about it? This is a Japanese pressing and it includes "See Emily Play", which is one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd songs. :)

  • Mice Parade - Mice Parade

    5. Jun. 2009, 14:15 von michaelterren

Could it be that an album could be so mediocre that it is totally great and simply lovable? I wanted to answer that question with a resounding 'yes' after I listened to the first track of Mice Parade's 2007 album, Mice Parade, but it just was not to be.

    1. SpielenSneaky Red - I just love this song. It's simple happy pop, with an ambient edge that feels smart enough not to lower your brain cell count considerably. Gently strumming nylon guitar, great drumming, swirling keyboards, consonant but unpredictable; it's difficult not to just admire the simplicity and its ability to still keep you guessing. Not a single wrong foot placed in this song.
    2. The Tales of Las Negras - A very strong song. Drums play the pivotal role, almost too much so, with the gentle keys and other stringed instruments delicately dancing around the overly zealous drums. But when the ambient guitar comes in, it all seems to slot into place, and when the seemingly untimed acoustic guitar comes in, it morphs into this wonderful textured piece. Very good.
    3. The Last Ten Homes - It's happy schnappy, but just doesn't cut it as much as the first two tracks. Unfortunately the drums seem to ruin the momentum of the song. I loved the four or five seconds at the end, with the electric guitar dancing around all nicely.
    4. Snow - It's a very pretty interlude of sorts. The nylon acoustic guitar/ukelele sound is very refreshing. The fuzzing of the guitars and the swirling ambience is nice.
    5. Double Dolphins On A Dime - The moment I heard this I instantly wanted to learn the guitar part at the beginning. It's ridiculously infectious. The whispering girl's vocals are quite interesting. Finally the drums learn to be at one with the music here, not the bucking stallion it was in 'The Last Ten Homes'. Everything else gets a little wish-washy, and when that guitar part fades away it loses its grandeur.
    6. Satchelaise - By this song I'd realized that vocalist Adam Pierce doesn't really mind having relatively the exact same vocals in each song. When the vocals came in I thought it sounded exactly like that of 'Sneaky Red'. I like it when the song picks up its pace, the guitar becoming a show-offy flamenco explosion. The instruments just seem to work together seamlessly, supporting each other, knowing their place, like they were of one brain. It's great.
    7. Swing - Yes, indeed it almost sounds like swing here, minus the drums. So no, it doesn't really work as swing, but it's a simple piece nonetheless, nice enough. I find though that once the repeated acoustic guitar pattern stops, the song just becomes flat, as the ambient electric guitars and keyboards take over.
    8. Circle None - Very pretty. The two acoustics and the keyboards intertwine perfectly, and when the electrics come in, tension builds wonderfully. But then it ends, just as it were beginning. Bah. Would've loved this so much more if it was expanded more.
    9. The Nights After Fiction - The start seems a little jagged; like the guitars just wanted to chill and relax, but was getting shoved along by the drums. The pacing guitars just doesn't suit the quick, swirling, partially synthesized drums, and its a shame this was translated into the rest of the song. Of course, the drumming performance is exceptional.. dominating, yes, but very skillfully played. I can't really get with the momentum of it until near the end of the song with the quirky synth solo, but it ends way too suddenly. It's like ending an essay on a statement which asks more questions than it answers.

Final thoughts - It started perfectly; Sneaky Red is just a wonderful tribulation. But putting such a lovely song at the beginning casts a shadow so dark on the rest of the album, it showed. The other eight tracks competed to top it, but unsuccessfully.
Call me a cock for saying this (stupid fucking teenagers...), but I think Mice Parade need to hone their songwriting skills a little more. Good on 'em for creating one great song, but there could've been several more here. One way I think this could be done is to step back on the percussion; there were times when it wasn't relevant and it really disrupted the serenity of it all. The melody works so perfectly, damn near flawlessly; the band must be really skilled at their parts, so why not exercise it completely and openly? Here's hoping.
There's a lot of promise here, but I was left somewhat dissatisfied by the end.
    6/10

    ---===---

WHEREIN is asked: "Whatchu gonna do without your ass?"

    --and--

WHEREIN is answered: "Who wrote the dead sea scrolls?"

This actually ended up pretty representative of my week: starting all stabby stabby, and ending a bit melancholy.

Porkcube said I should actually attempt to mix for these mixtapes, so I did that sometimes.

    ENJOY OR DIE
