Manowar ist eine US-amerikanische Band, die als Begründer der musikalischen Stilrichtung des True Metals gilt.

Geschichte

Manowar wurden von Joey DeMaio und Ross Friedman (genannt Ross The Boss) im Jahre 1980 gegründet. Beide lernten sich auf der Heaven-and-Hell-Tour von Black Sabbath kennen, bei der DeMaio als Bass- und Pyrotechniker und Friedman als Gitarrist für die Vorgruppe Shakin’ Street beteiligt waren. Nach ersten Demoaufnahmen mit Schlagzeuger Carl Canedy und Sänger/Gitarrist David Feinstein von The Rods wurde 1982 mit Eric Adams (Sänger), einem Schulfreund Joeys, und Schlagzeuger Donnie Hamzick das Debütalbum Battle Hymns eingespielt. Für dieses Album gelang es Manowar auch, den amerikanischen Regisseur und Schauspieler Orson Welles, bekannt für seine tiefe und sonore Stimme, für die Textpassagen in dem Song Dark Avenger sowie dem Song auf der Single Defender zu gewinnen. Letzteres Stück wurde 1987 auf dem Album Fighting the World neu heraus gebracht. Noch heute beginnt jedes Manowar-Konzert mit Welles’ Stimme: „Ladies and gentlemen, from the United States of America, all hail Manowar!“

Seit dem zweiten Album ist Scott Columbus Schlagzeuger der Band, musste die Position allerdings, da sein Sohn schwer erkrankt war, um 1990 verlassen und konnte erst ab 1996 wieder mitwirken.

I loves me some talentless voiceless regurgitation. It keeps my angsty self in check. Also, it has been repeated time and time again, enough to become quite tedious but, in truth, shoutbox != fanbox. I can post whatever I want about the band in question, as many times as I want it. I'm under no illusion that I'll change the opinion of your average Manowar fan (they're too far gone), but if I can turn a novice listener away from this garbage then I'm happy.

Well, I can't say that your opinion of Manowar's music holds much weight seeing as you're into death metal, but at least your comment was coherent. You listen to Neurosis, really? Personally I can't stand angry grunting being passed off as metal (or music for that matter). That just isn't heavy metal. It should have it's own, more descriptive genre, ie: "Talentless, voiceless regurgitation". This grunting is unfortunately mainstream now and I see it on TV way too often. Judging by today's semi-retarded society...that says something. It also seems that you're into plenty of good music too, so whatever, your opinion is your own. One question though, why go trolling through artists that you don't like? Bored or something? Personally, I don't care to discuss this much further, especially since it seems that I'm outnumbered by the more intelligent and more musically adept penis artist crowd.

Thank you DT2K for providing me with an example to counter all the misguided Manowar fanboys who claim that their music, appearance and attitude are not to be taken seriously. They have mastered the art of parodying metal, Nanowar has got nothing on them. Also, strength through music - sure, there are bands who successfully accomplish that. Such a shame, then, that Manowar's music is impotent. They are the WWE of music.

Manowar is about strength, power and brotherhood, pretty much the antithesis of the whining and moaning of 90's grunge. What kind of music you listen to greatly reflects on what kind of a person you are and says a lot about your place in society with respect to others. If you think like a weakling, then you are/will be a weakling. On another note, I think that if you draw ASCII art penises in the comments and then talk about which one of the Manowar pictures you think is gay....well then you should seriously start worrying about your own sexual orientation.
