Tue 24 May – 3 Nights in Heaven

Het was de verjaardag van Bob Dylan, een heuglijk feit datAlan Sparhawk niet zomaar wou laten voorbij gaan. Het eerste nummer ‘Nothing But Heart’ werd opgedragen aan de jarige Bob nadat Alan eerst in grote uithalen op zijn gitaar een verjaardagsriedel speelde. De sfeer was gezet. Low stond strak, de muziek gonsde doorheen de kerk, de speelse verlichting deed de rest. Het slowcore-verleden werd de verdoemenis ingespeeld. De nieuwe tracks, allen geplukt van ‘C’mon’, werden gecombineerd met wat ouder werk. Geen ‘Dinosaur Act’, hoewel die perfect in de intense set had gepast, maar een stevig rockende blik op het heden en verleden. Het publiek werd naar voor gelokt, verstomming sloeg in, stilte overheerste en Low werd de cult van de nacht.

Through The Watery Graves of Portland. Once I got into them I went to the Marriage Records site and found a bunch of good stuff.

Magnolia Electric Co.

It wasn't until 2007 when the band released Sojourner. I had liked some of what I'd heard from Songs:Ohia and thought I'd give this a shot too. Despite liking Sojourner pretty well, I still haven't dug much into their back catalog.

Probably Chelsea Hotel. Or Hallelujah - though I don't know if it was his version or not.

Low's Things We Lost In the Fire was one of the best reasons to get into slowcore.

I never heard of them before. Living in a place where nobody knows a thing about good music, it is difficult to find such things. I believe I was listening to things like Red House Painters and Mojave 3 maybe some shoegaze. Anyway, one day I bought a magazine called Código 06140 and there was an article about sadcore with several bands. Then I found the connection between each other style. And surfing the web I found Dinosaur Act and Sunflower. It was a delicate and soothing rock that I fell in love with. The voices were like in slow motion while the guitars were swinging giddily, creating tension but releasing it again.

Athough the drums are very repetitive, they don't really bore. Parker's voice is beautiful, soft and sweet. she creates surrounding atmospheres with the sound of her drums while their soft and slow voices glide during all this tension. …
