    1. Unwound - Rat Conspiracy (2014)

Fake Train and New Plastic Ideas hold important places in the history of 90s music, not to mention those of punk and indie as a whole. And they set the tone for unimagined Unwound greatness to come (which will be chronicled in subsequent volumes of the box-set series). But those two albums, and the tracks that accompany them on Rat Conspiracy, transcend time, place, attitude, and even the sprawling continuum of influence. More than any other records of their generation, they embody a paradox that disaffected youth has been stabbing at since the advent of rock ’n’ roll: how it feels to be cocooned among strangers in utter alienation, yet stand as one.

    2. Peter Green - The End Of The Game (1970)

Each track here is instrumental, and each carries its own flavor. The opener, Bottom's Up, features a driving blues-rock jam with Green running cricles around his fretboard. Timeless Time is slower, more psychedelic in nature, with a slight avant-garde jazz feeling. …

It is once again time to list some stuff. It is also once again time for me to wonder why the hell I always leave making this list to the last couple of weeks before the year ends. One would think that I'd learn something from a mistake I have now made for five years in a row... oh well. I recently went through my lists from 2012 and 2013, and I am surprised by how well they still hold up in 2014 (in the lists from 2009 to 2011 things start to get a bit funky). I guess my taste hasn't changed that radically over the last three or so years in terms of disliking things I have liked in the past, but the scale of my listening habits has definitely grown in terms of new interests. As always, this year's list is very much all over the place, but that is how I like it. This is a true representation of the type of stuff that I enjoy listening to on a daily basis. None of the albums listed made it because I thought they deserved to be included, but because I wanted them to be included.

  • 2014 Reviews and Ratings

    16. Jan. 2014, 22:46 von XfnSnow

This Journal was me at a full head of steam in the first 2 months of 2014, when I was really networking and finding new releases... then I got a new job and have been alarmingly busy, to the point of not really even having much time to listen to music. The whole year feels like it's been dragged out from under my feet. Still, this is a comprehensive-ish LIST. I'm confident in it's quality and although I'm just adding the finishing touches, it has some little reflections on each release. Quantity over quality really (in that I'd rather present lots of good bands, than just a few with really carefully written write ups). Admittedly, this year I have been a lot more stringent with what's made it on to the list. there's been lots of good but not mind blowing stuff, so I've kept it off. Also, hardly any bigger name bands, as I see this as a place for discovery (primarily). I can't promise next year I will do a 2015 journal in this format, although I am hoping to actually start a real blog or something (Cartographers of the Fata Morgana). …

  • the top 40 rekkids of 2012 (I'm so late)

    31. Jan. 2013, 3:31 von KMFCM

The top 40 rekkids of 2012 (the worst fucking year ever)
I told you this year would suck.
I told you everyone would be hoping the world would in fact end.
It didn’t though (but My Bloody Valentine might still bring about the end of the world next year, ha ha ha)
….not only that, very few bands really delivered albums that captured the general feeling of wanting the world to end this year. You’ll see which. I’m a little surprised I ended up having more than 40 albums to put together. You had quite a few huge disappointments. . . . .you also had a couple of bands suddenly deciding to really try this year.
    Here they are. . .

    Here goes the list
    40. Noisear – Turbulent Resrgence
It getting on this list has nothing to do with whether or not they ended the album with a long ass noise track or not. It's just that good.

    39. Malignancy – Eugenics
it's rare that a tech death band can write shit so creazy, and still not just be an in-one-ear-out-the-other band. It sticks.

  • 2012 summary, or THE journal you've all been waiting for!

    3. Jan. 2013, 19:15 von Mrozikos667

So, yet another issue of the Year End Summary is about to amuse and bewilder you. It was an awesome year for music, and it was also a totally magnificent year for my other passion, cinema, but that's not the place to speak about it. Anyway, for quite some time I've had this thought that this summary business is kinda stupid – suddenly in December you realise how many potentially awesome albums you've missed and then you desperately try to make up for it by listening as much as you can, neglecting your work, studies, family, girlfriend, cat or whatever you've got to care for. Not that I intend to drop doing this or something, I guess I just like doing pointless stuff nobody cares about. Oh well, I start to blabber here. So, let's get ready to rumble!

    3/10:
This or the Apocalypse – Dead Years (The Worst Album of the Year and The Disappointment of the Year; it's actually really, really sad how this band managed to stoop so low after two great releases...)
