Savannah GA, Vereinigte Staaten (2000 – aktuell)

Kylesa ist eine US-amerikanische Sludge Band.

Die Band wurde Ende 2000/ Anfang 2001 in Savannah (Georgia) von Gitarrist und Sänger Philipp Cope, Bassist Brian Duke und Schlagzeuger Christian Depken gegründet, die zuvor in der Crustcore-Band Damad gespielt hatten. Depken wurde bereits nach kurzer Zeit durch Brandon Baltzley ersetzt, das erste Line-up war Anfang 2001 mit Sängerin und Gitarristin Laura Pleasants vervollständigt. Der Name der Band leitet sich von „Kilesa-Mara“ ab was im Buddhismus für die fünf Dämonen der Verderbtheit steht.

Es folgten die Single „Point of Stillness/Judgement Day“ und eine Split-EP mit Memento Mori. Die Aufnahmen zum Debütalbum wurden vom Tod des Gründungsmitglieds Brian Duke überschattet, der an den Folgen eines epileptischen Anfalls verstarb. Mit seinem Nachfolger Corey Barhorst konnten die Aufnahmen zum ersten Album Kylesa beendet werden, das im April 2002 bei Prank Records erschien.

Nachdem die Band verschiedene Singles und 2004 die EP No Ending 110 Degree Heat Index veröffentlicht hatten, konnte 2005 ein Plattenvertrag beim Independent-Label Prosthetic Records unterschrieben und das zweite Album To Walk A Middle Course veröffentlicht werden. Kurz nach dessen Erscheinen verließ Schlagzeuger Brandon Baltzley die Band und sie beschloss, künftig mit zwei Schlagzeugern zu arbeiten, die Anfang 2006 mit Jeff Porter und Carl McGinley gefunden wurden. In dieser Besetzung wurde das dritte Album Time Will Fuse Its Worth eingespielt. 2008 wurde Jeff Porter durch Eric Hernandez ersetzt, im März 2009 erschien das vierte Studioalbum, Static Tensions, ein Jahr später, im Oktober 2010 folgte das fünftes Studioalbum, Spiral Shadow.

    Not sure if I like the new album. Everything seems to be drenched in reverb and it just sounds muddy or they're playing a wind tunnel

    Not better than "Static Tensions" and "Spiral Shadow", but still very, very nice. Good they wanted to pursue somewhat different style this time. I still prefer them at their more aggresive, but damn, these songs on "Ultraviolet" are just too good to ignore.

    new album is brilliant...slightely different sound...but one can feel the anger they gone through the last "hard" years...read the article in the german METALHAMMER...hear it again...then judge....8). THX KYLESA for another great record....a level most bands are not capeable of of holding after 6 Records!! :)

    i think thye've just done what Baroness. Baroness had red and blue so people expected Purple but instead they got yellow and green. This record sounds different from all the other Kylesa records I like that though.. It;s great music and there's some proper grooves on it If you want Sludge by numbers this isn't the record for you but come at it with an open mind and it fucking rules.

    New album is mediocre, with Steady Breadown being the only highlight. First five songs just don't fit the album, but as soon as What Does It Take kicks in, it starts to feel like a listenable Kylesa album. I was definitely expecting more.
