Kitty Wells (* 30. August 1918 als Ellen Muriel Deason in Nashville, Tennessee, USA) ist eine US-amerikanische Country-Sängerin. Die „Queen of Country Music“ wurde 1952 mit dem Song It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angles bekannt. Sie gilt als erster weiblicher Superstar der Countrymusik.


Bereits als Teenager trat Kitty Wells gemeinsam mit ihren Schwestern als Deason Sisters im lokalen Radiosender auf. Dort lernte sie den Country-Musiker Johnny Wright kennen, den sie 1938 heiratete und der auch ihr Manager wurde. Mit seiner Schwester Louise traten sie als Johnny Wright and the Harmony Girls auf. Louises Ehemann, Jack Anglin, schloss sich 1939 dem Trio an. Auch der später als Produzenten- Superstar berühmt gewordenen Chet Atkins spielte zeitweise mit der Band. Ab 1945 bildeten Wright und Anglin das leidlich erfolgreiche Duo Johnny and Jack. Die spätere „Queen of Country-Music“ trat fortan als Solistin unter dem Namen Kitty Wells auf, der von ihrem Mann ausgesucht wurde und einem bekannten Folk-Song entnommen war.


1949 spielten sowohl Johnny and Jack als auch Kitty Wells bei RCA einige Singles ein, die sich aber nicht sonderlich gut verkauften. Die Schallplattenfirma verzichtete auf eine weitere Zusammenabeit mit Wells, da weibliche Country-Musiker in diesen Jahren wenig gewinnversprechend waren. Sie zog sich deshalb ins Privatleben zurück und widmete sich der Erziehung ihrer Tochter.

    Kitty Wells was the kind of gal you'd love to take home to Mother. While no raving beauty, Kitty captured the hearts of many a man with her honest and "girl-next-door" looks ... She simply exuded an earthiness that appeals to most men ... and ... her simple vocal ability, although taking some getting used to at first, comes through with a lot of punch and REAL Country.

    Many years ago as a young fellow smitten with Country and Bluegrass music, a love I have never lost, Miss Kitty Wells came to our picnic table at the Sunset Country Music Park in Sunset PA and ate my mother's fried chicken with us. A memory and kindness that rushes back to me today upon the death of this gentle and wonderful lady. Her music and memory fortunately will be with us and those behind us forever. RIP Sweet Lady with the sweet voice.
