  • Top 10: Favorite Albums Of 2009

    2. Dez. 2009, 12:09 von River_Of_Heaven

    (In random order)

    Behemoth-Evangelion
    Blackened death metal

Listen to this and then listen to ambient bands like SOTL=uber amazing feeling which is beyond description.

    Baroness-Blue Record
    Progressive/Southern rock

Forget about sludge metal, I’m in love with southern rock now.

Blut aus Nord- Memoria Vetusta II-Dialogue with the Stars
    Atmospheric black metal

    See, black metal is beautiful.

    Devin Townsend Project-Addicted
    Progressive rock/Industrial/IDM

Musically, it’s progressive industrial thrashy nu metal going IDM. Yeah, I’m addicted to Addicted! I don’t get why it’s called heavy-enya though.

    Jon Hopkins- Insides
    IDM/Ambient/Electronica

He’s a genius in this field. Enough said.

    Karnivool-Sound Awake
    Progressive/Alternative rock

They’re a great discovery for me this year. Set Fire to the Hive is a killer.

maudlin of the Well-Part The Second
    Avant-grade metal/Progressive/Art rock

Music is art. You get it.

Nobuo Uematsu-Lord of Vermilion Original Soundtrack
    Progressive rock/Game music

Mr. Uematsu is as awesome as Mr. Townsend.

    Obscura- Cosmogenesis
    Technical death metal/Progressive

I give props to them not because they’re like Cynic meets Opeth meets Death meets Necrophagist, not because their stellar bass work, but because they have a cosmic sound. This's not space rock but it takes me to universe.

Six Organs of Admittance- Luminous Night
    Psychedelic folk

Do you notice that my name here is taken from the sixth track on LN?

    Honorable mentions:
    Killswitch Engage-Killswitch Engage
    Melodic metalcore/Rock

Hardcore, thrash, sludge, melodic death, power, rock, shoegaze, ambient, this is what new album brings to us basically, varied and interesting. They could have done better though, in my opinion.

    Swallow the Sun-New Moon
    Melodic death/Doom metal

They’re my favorite melodic death doom band, so I couldn’t care less even if they make the same music. Same thing goes for Insomnium. I’m a sucker for dark, melancholic, epic music, you know. Well, they change a little bit this time with a slight black metal sound, which is a good thing.

    Mastodon - Crack The Skye
    Progressive rock/Sludge metal

It’s kinda weird that Mastodon’s been a band I’ve had problems getting into since I like sludge legends such as Crowbar, Neurosis (who are Mastodon’s biggest influences by the way), and modern acts, Isis, Baroness, etc.
That said, it doesn't surprise me that they crack top 5 in many year-end lists as CTS is indeed a good album filled with strong painful emotions.
Yet, I’m still not a fan of them. lol

Between the Buried and Me- The Great Misdirect
    Progressive metal

First listen: Oh, songs are way too long again. They’re out of ideas. They make progressive music for the sake of it.
Second listen: They at least have their own sound, DT meets PF. They’re above average.
Third listen: TGM is well-written, to some degree. I like it.

    Revocation-Existence Is Futile
    Thrash/Technical death metal

    New Megadeth=still Megadeth.
New Slayer=pure fast paced old school punk. See, punk and thrash are neighbours.
New Evile=they should start a sludge metal band seriously.
    …
New Revocation=thrash with a hint of technical death, kinda fresh, and it gets better with every listen. Can they live up to the hype ”Next big thing in metal!”? Let’s wait and see.

    And a bunch more…

    Children of Bodom
    Machine Head

Mindless Self-Indulgence -Headliners. 28/1/09 - Ehh, I was only really there for In Case of Fire and Black Tide. Still, MSI's best song had to be Faggot. AND there was a wall of hugs.

    Dir en grey
    Black Tide
    In Case of Fire

Attack! Attack! -Headliners. 21/2/09 - Great, once again, they never disappoint. Best song this time round was This is a Test.

    Tonight Is Goodbye
    Said Mike
    Out of Sight

Fei Comodo - Headliners. 26/2/09 - Brilliant! I really want to see these live again. Best track was This One's For Us.

    Bury Tomorrow
    Kaikoura

Electric Six - Headliners. 7/3/09 - Fun gig. A few dickheads there though, but what can you do eh? Best song has to go to Improper Dancing.

    Tragedy
    Finding Atlantis

Lights - Headliners. 14/4/09 - I only watched a little part of her set, and I'd never listened to her stuff before. I might have to, because I've heard it's good.

    In This Moment
    VersaEmerge
    Whole Wheat Bread

Madina Lake - Headliners. 2/5/09 - Amazing, almost tops off Slipknot. Best track was either True Love or Me vs. The World.

    Yashin
    The Audition
    Flood of Red

The Blackout - Headliners. 27/5/09 - Great! Silverstein were one of the first bands I really got into aswell, and Hollywood Undead were just pure awesome. Best track SpielenI'm A Riot? You're A Fucking Riot!

    The Urgency
    Hollywood Undead
    Silverstein

Saving Aimee - Headliners. 7/6/09 - Haha, this gig was alright. The best song hands down was Small Talk. So good, they played it twice.

    The Mission District
    Twenty Twenty

Twenty Twenty - Headliners. 10/9/09 - This was fun. (: Best track was Forever, me and a few mates went kinda crazy.

    The Gap Year Riot
    The Broadcast

The Used - Headliners. 16/9/09 - I only really went to this for We Are The Ocean (their best track was Nothing Good Has Happened Yet even though a friend of mine fucked his ankle up) to be quite honest, but The Used but on a good show. Best Used track: Empty with You.

    We Are The Ocean
    Hexes

Go:Audio - Headliners. 5/10/09 (best song: Brake! Brake!)

Attack! Attack! - Best band of the night. Their best song was Too Bad Son.
    Saving Aimee
    Twenty Twenty

Dream Theater - Headliners. 9/10/09 - WOW. They put on an absolutely amazing show. Best gig I've ever been to. Best songs: ALL OF THEM!

Opeth - Opeth were brilliant too, their best song: SpielenApril Ethereal
    Bigelf
    Unexpect

Papa Roach - Headliners. 13/10/09 - Papa Roach exceeded all of my expectations, they were just great. Good atmosphere and they sounded pretty much flawless.

    Madina Lake
    Heaven's Basement

Enter Shikari - Headliners. 20/10/09 - Amazing gig, absolutely packed (sold-out) and an awesome set list to top it off. It's hard to choose the best song for me, so I'm going to go with SpielenMothership, SpielenGap in the Fence, SpielenZzzonked, and last but not least: the 15-minute version of SpielenSorry, You're Not A Winner. Being a big fan of Shikari, it was a blast seeing them live for the first time, and I think it's absolutely awesome how they treat the crowd like a 5th member of the band. Really good gig!

The Devil Wears Prada - A sidenote: TDWP are shit.
    True Tiger

Fightstar - Headliners. 26/10/09 - Brilliant band, shit crowd is what I have to say about this gig. Fightstar were literally pitch perfect and the set was brilliant. I especially loved SpielenPaint Your Target and Mercury Summer.

    Saving Aimee
    Young Guns
    Prego

Rise Against - Headliners. 18/11/09 - Absolutely amazing, they built up the night's atmosphere so well with extended build-ups and even a piano intro to - the first song I ever heard by them - Dancing for Rain. Best songs were: SpielenDancing For Rain, Swing Live Away, SpielenDrones.

    Thursday
    Poison the Well

Bring Me the Horizon - Headliners. 20/11/09 - I didn't really enjoy BMTH that much really, although Braile (For Stevie Wonder's Eyes Only) was a pretty good song.

    A Day to Remember
August Burns Red - Loved August Burns Red, caught Matt Grainer's drumstick! They were great and the frontman is a really awesome guy to talk to. SpielenComposure I loved, but the set was pretty much perfect, in my opinion. I was getting a lot of weird looks for shouting the words back at him, but who cares? I wanna see them on a headline at Newcastle SO BADLY. (:

Yashin - Headliners. 21/11/09 - Best song was The First Rule Of Fight Club. They also got the old vocalist on stage for the end of Dirty Slut. Only complaint was that I seemed to be getting punched by hardcore dancers a lot. Oh, and they didn't play SpielenSo We're Named After Saints.

    Noise Explosion
    This Is Divine
    This Way Up

The Mission District - Headliners. 24/11/09 - Best song was the Just Dance cover. ;p

    The New Cities
    The Broadcast
    This Never Fails

Killswitch Engage - Headliners, Taste of Chaos 2009. 30/11/09 - Killswitch were great, Howard was funny haha - "Who do you think I am? A black guy in a metal band? Oh...right..." Best song they did, for me, was SpielenMy Last Serenade.

In Flames - These were amazing too, and they did a signing before the show, which I got tickets for. :D The best song, though, was SpielenPinball Map
    Every Time I Die
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.

It's not as big as some people's lists (I am aware it is not that impressive, it's just something I'm putting together to keep track of the bands I've seen).

    So basically, I've seen:

    Dropkick Murphys
    Mad Caddies
    The Briggs
    A lost corz
    Mid-Term Break
    Attack! Attack! x3
    Children of Bodom

  • Why I Stopped Using Pandora

    30. Nov. 2009, 9:40 von wingkon

So, some people complain about the comparisons that Last.fm makes. Well check this out. Here are a few ridiculous comparisons Pandora made. I don't know if they changed them yet or not, but here are a few that I've seen. I'll add more. Feel free to contribute, if you've noticed anything like this on Pandora.

    Arch Enemy and Pantera
    Atreyu and Rise Against
Bullet For My Valentine and Rise Against
Bullet For My Valentine and Breaking Benjamin
Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom
Cradle of Filth and Arch Enemy
    Dido and Enya
    Disturbed and Linkin Park
    Emilie Autumn and Within Temptation
    Emilie Autumn and Nightwish
Eths and As I Lay Dying
    Eths and Atreyu
    Evanescence and Seether
    Evanescence and Linkin Park
    Evanescence and 3 Doors Down
    Evanescence and Three Days Grace
    Lacuna Coil and Flyleaf
    Lacuna Coil and Fireflight
    Lacuna Coil and Breaking Benjamin
    Metallica and Guns N' Roses
Kittie and System of a Down
    Kittie and Flyleaf
    Metallica and AC/DC
    Opeth and In Flames
Otep and System of a Down
    Pantera and Rob Zombie
    Pantera and Alice in Chains
    Pantera and Tool
    Twisted Sister and Metallica

    A few trends I've noticed:
Many metal bands comapred to Tool and A Perfect Circle
Many melodic death metal or metalcore bands compared to In Flames.
Pretty much every metalcore band comapred to Killswitch Engage, All That Remains or As I Lay Dying
Any nu-metal, and a other types are compared to Slipknot, Korn or Mudvayne
Any female fronted gothic/symphonic is compared to Within Temptation and Nightwish
Most hard rock bands compared to Breaking Benjamin
And thrash metal compared to Metallica or Megadeth
And female fronted pop-country compared to Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood

I could go on and on...
