Kate Bush (* 30. Juli 1958 in Bexleyheath, Kent, England; eigentlich Catherine Bush) ist eine englische Sängerin, Pianistin und Songwriterin.

Kate Bush wurde 1975 von David Gilmour, dem Gitarristen von Pink Floyd, entdeckt und der EMI vorgestellt. Dort erschien 1978 ihr Debütalbum The Kick Inside, das nach wie vor als eines ihrer besten Alben gilt und ihren Single-Hit Wuthering Heights beinhaltet. Ihren ersten Fernsehauftritt hatte sie 1978 in der ARD-Sendung „Bios Bahnhof“, und ihre einzige Tournee fand im Jahr 1979 statt.

Ihr größter kommerzieller Erfolg ist bis heute das Album Hounds Of Love mit den Titeln Running Up That Hill und Hounds of Love. Ihr neuestes Album Aerial erschien nach langer Wartezeit und vielen Verzögerungen Anfang November 2005; ihm voraus ging im Oktober desselben Jahres die erste Single-Auskopplung King of the Mountain.

Ihre Themen schöpft sie aus der Gefühlswelt des Menschen, in Text und Musik beschreibt sie u.a. Geschwisterliebe (The Kick Inside), Vereinsamung (Deeper Understanding) oder Zärtlichkeit und Erotik (The Sensual World), das Leben nach einem Atomkrieg (Breathing), das Fliegen eines Papierdrachens (Kite) oder die Faszination der Zahl Pi. Dabei verarbeitet sie häufig auch Stoffe aus der Literatur sowie aus Filmen, so etwa dem Roman „Wuthering Heights“ (deutsch: Sturmhöhe) von Emily Brontë, dem Werk von Psychoanalytiker Wilhelm Reich, aber auch gesellschaftliche und politische Motive sowie menschliche Konflikte.

    I remember the very first time i've listened ' Hounds of Love'. I was standing in a crowd bus, it was 22:00, i was tired... I was thinking "Oh, that's a cool album".... But when Ninth Wave started, the album started to grow and grow, when the instrumental section of 'Jig of Life' started, i was petrified, i was very impressed and frightened at the same time! Love at first listening!!!!

    It may be her weakest compared to her other albums, but it's a good start in Kate's catalouge. The first five songs on HOL are excellent, so I don't see how anyone could find them boring. TSW is more boring, though.

    kate lyrics are more into story telling. why kate is special is how well crafted her songs and production is. and how versatile and changing it's been considering shes been the only one writing it and producing it (without any outsider help) for almost 40 years.

    i mean, my favourite lyricists in order are probably something like this: 1. aimee mann, 2. joni mitchell, 3. joanna newsom, 4. suzanne vega, 5. kirsty maccoll, 6. kate bush, 7. laurie anderson. if i was measuring the whole package along with musical production and merit, the list would be completely different. almost reversed, actually. funny.

    you know, i wouldn't describe kate's lyrics as "simple" at all. they are certainly more minimalistic than a lot of other singer/songwriter's, though. i feel that kate's songwriting style is an example of saying a lot by not saying too much. by choosing not to cram songs with over-complicated semi-prose, she creates a much more malleable atmosphere than more rigidly descriptive and witty songwriters who rely on their skilful use of wordplay. kirsty maccoll had mastered the latter category before her untimely death while artists like alanis morrissette, ani difranco and even tori amos and fiona apple struggle to find the balance, as far as i'm concerned. i will concede that joanna newsom could be said to write lyrics like kate produces songs. brimming with detail and interesting asides. different? yes. better? it depends on your personal tastes.
