Wow! The things you can do with just an electric piano, a gorgeous voice, and a few vocal overlays. Love the CSN&Y version, too, but this song is Joni's & she captures the event perfectly (without even being there!).

If a singer with an instrument wanted to put their music out there it's much easier than it was. Harder to make a career of it though.

People just don't seem to write songs like this anymore. Have we lost the ability, do they get killed off by the record companies before they get chance to be aired? Or is it just a long-lost spirit of a bygone era that we can only glimpse through the music of the time?

I also loved Travelogue version. We are stardust, we are a billion year old carbon.... we are golden, caught up in the Devil's bargain..... and we got to get ourselves back to the garden.... we've got to get ourselves back to some semblance of a garden...

I don't think Kate Bush has ever cited Joni as an influence or favourite, but listening to her you'd think she must be.

@kiteo "The hippy sentiment of this song belies the cynical commercialism of why she wasn't there in the first place" May well be true...but seems to me Woodstock may not have been that far from cynical commercialism itself. If anything this is just a powerful song with a powerful message.
