Biografie

Joanna Newsom (* 1982 in Nevada City, Kalifornien), ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin, Harfenspielerin und Liederautorin.

Newsom studierte Musik und kreatives Schreiben am Mills College in Oakland, nahe San Francisco. Seit ihrem 7. Lebensjahr spielt sie Harfe und erlangte dabei hohe Virtuosität, gepaart mit einem außergewöhnlichen Stil.

2002, nachdem sie u.a. bei den Gruppen Golden Shoulders und The Pleased Keyboard spielte, verspürte sie das Bedürfnis zu ihrem Harfenspiel auch zu singen.

Mit ihren Liedern wurde Newsom schnell zu einer der bedeutendsten Vertreterinnen der neuen, modernen Folk-Bewegung in den USA, die als , , oder bekannt ist. Newsoms Musik vereint diverse Musikrichtungen, wie , Appalachen-Musik und avantgardistische Moderne.
Neben ihrem gefühlvollen Harfenspiel und ihren lyrisch gehaltvollen, avantgardistischen Texten ist die besonders sensible Interpretation ihrer Lieder auffällig. In ihrer hohen Stimmlage, kindesgleich, ist Newsom bestrebt, jedem einzelnen Ton, ausdrucksstark und intensiv, eine ganz individuelle Note zu verleihen.

Zwölf ihrer eigenwilligen Kompositionen versammelte sie 2004 auf ihrem Album Milk-Eyed Mender, dessen Veröffentlichung hohes Lob nach sich zog, besonders bei Musikkritikern. Es fand jedoch auch über den Fankreis spezifischer Musikrichtungen hinaus, bei einem breiteren Auditorium, Anklang.

    Something that excites me when I think about Joanna Newsom (constantly) is knowing that when I'm like, 60 or something, I'll have at least 8 or 9 of her albums and all of them will be flawless. We can't rush perfection so I'm willing to wait as long as it takes. We should think more about what moods, themes, elements and LYRICS she'll unleash unto the World in her next record, not how she's going to "one-up" her previous one. Milk-Eyed Mender, Ys and Have One On Me are all beautiful in their own ways, and the next album will be too. <3
