• The Female Singer-Songwriter "Fad" Of The Late 90's

Remember the end of the last millennium? Remember how the Lilith Fair sold out venues across the country? Remember how artists such as Abra Moore, Patti Rothberg, Jennifer Trynin, etc. broke into the charts with minor hits? Remember how these artists and many other female voices hit the "glass ceiling" almost overnight, when they ceased to pay dividends for their record companies?

Here in SF, the XX chromosome singer-songwriter trend was a pretty big deal. A big local radio station, KFOG, playlisted many of these artists, and a whole new station, Alice (KLLC) was almost specifically formatted to cater to the demographic.

Now, as 2010 zooms by, a female singer-songwriter who wants to get noticed as an albums artist almost has to go straight indie to get noticed, while impotent "Scooch On Over Closer" male songwriters with quasi-Jamaican accents get signed by the dozen. What happened? Dave Matthews? Jewel? Limp Bizkit? Britney Spears? Oversaturation? Did female singer-songwriters stop writing good songs?
