  • (2009 - November) The revolution goes on

    4. Dez. 2009, 23:07 von empii

As my first personal-chart review was read by over 340 people, without any negative comment, neither positive ones (*smiles*), I guess it seems okay to write such and I will continue now with these in a monthly rhythm.

So the revolution of the female fronted metalbands continues, even if not as much as anticipated. Whilst Stream of Passion continued to conquer the Top 50 and even reached the Top 15 now, Epica had to shed feathers but still keeps their 12th position.

So on the Charts for the last three Months, maybe the best statistic for the actual musical taste, Opeth not just lost their leading position, they also dropped to third behind the now leading Stream of Passion and Epica.

Completely new in my library is the swiss band Eluveitie. I like their Album "Evocation" a lot and listened to them so much, that they made it into my Top 50 in just one week, also winning the "Weekly Top Artists" Charts then.

But as I mentioned earlier, the revolution hasn't unfolded as much as a I thought, seeing a Band like Iron Maiden as a weekly winner. But I was just in the mood for this kind of music these days :).

When we talk about new bands in my library, I have to recommend these to you:
    Beautiful Sin
    Virus IV
    Aesma Daeva
    Darzamat

I think they are more than worth a short mention, but as time runs out I have to keep it short. Especially the first two bands are extremely good if you like Bands like Triosphere or Amaran, bands with a strong female voice in the lead and not too boring music behind them. All these bands are far off the cliché of being in any way something like a "Gothic Metal Band with female vocals", so even typical Heavy-Metal Fans of Iron Maiden, Dio, Saxon or Judas Priest. Surely a female voice is different and some do hate that, but I think they are quite nice to listen to :). Give them a try!

All in all I not just made my 1.100th Muician/-s in my library, I even topped that with a whopping 1.128 Artists now. And that without more than two hours of listening to the last.fm radio in my whole two years after resigning here again! My harddisc isn't even halfway through with music, so there is still a lot to come!

Greetings and have a nice Christmas and a very much better new year!

  • Top Scrobbles of 2009 - Tentative

    4. Dez. 2009, 4:05 von tihsymtae

    Top Artists
    1. The Beatles - 628 scrobbles
I confess that I am one of the many suckers who shelled out a crapload of money to buy the remasters that came out in September. They certainly sound better than the original '87 CD releases, but unless you have a really good stereo system (which I don't) the difference isn't big enough to be worth all that money. Still, at least I finally completed my collection and now I'm forced to admit that there are some very good songs in their early catalog.

    2. Bob Dylan - 486
This is all back-catalog listening. Dylan released two albums this year, neither of which I bought. And based on the reviews, I don't intend to.

    3. Opeth - 476
This is mostly back-catalog listening. Opeth released Watershed in '08 and I still had it on heavy rotation for much of this year. I don't think it was their best album to date, but it was very good and I like the direction they're heading in. I'm looking forward to a new album sometime in 2010.

    4. Johann Sebastian Bach - 466
What is there to say? Timeless.

    5. Mastodon - 413
I discovered Mastodon late last year. I bought Leviathan in December '08 and by the middle of this year I'd bought their complete catalog. Crack The Skye is my absolute favorite album of '09. From what I hear there'll be no new album in 2010 which is fine with me since (a) I'll still be listening to Crack The Skye on heavy rotation for a while and (b) I have no idea how they can possibly top themselves.

    6. Bruce Springsteen - 412
In one sense this is all back-catalog listening. The newest Springsteen album I own is The Rising from 2002. But earlier this year I bought The River from 1980. It's a mixed album. There are great songs like the title track and "Hungry Heart" and there are no bad songs. But unlike most Springsteen albums, it felt like a collection of random songs; their sum was no greater than the parts.

    7. Marisa Monte - 390
Love her voice. Always have, probably always will. And I absolutely love the lyrics that Arnaldo Antunes writes for many of her songs. Her last album was in 2006; Here's hoping there'll be another one in 2010.

    8. Pink Floyd - 357
I have finally come to terms with the fact that I only like 70's Pink Floyd. I gave up trying to like their psychedelic stuff from the 60's and I've always been lukewarm about their glossy cinematic rock from the 80's. I used to own their entire catalog but now I'm selling everything pre-Meddle and postThe Wall to free up some space on my CD shelf. Still, I like the stuff from the 70's so much that I don't expect them to drop out of this top-10 list next year.

    9. Iron Maiden - 349
Like Pink Floyd, I've come to accept the fact that I don't like Iron Maiden as much as I once did. With the exception of Brave New World and a few scattered tracks, I think most of their post-Powerslave output is pretty weak. Also like Pink Floyd, I'll probably start selling some of their CDs to make room on my shelf.

    10. Metallica - 348
After all these years, still one of my favorites. Death Magnetic was a good comeback album after the underrated but ultimately unsuccessful experiment that was St. Anger. And though it came out in 2008, I listened to it pretty heavily throughout most of this year. Who knows when they'll get around to recording another album! In the meantime there's a lot of good stuff in their back catalog to keep me satisfied. Maybe I'll revisit Ride The Lightning sometime in 2010.

  • 40 Questions About Your Top 50

    3. Dez. 2009, 0:01 von NH3Maser

Disclaimer: my top 50 don't really reflect my current taste in music all that well. I'm working on changing that.

    1. How did you get into 31?
In Flames. I was looking for a good metal instrumental, and someone recommended SpielenMan Made God.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Ah, Cynic's Veil of Maya. This may be my favorite album opener of all time.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29?
"Bow to the savior of the fearful and desperate / Shepherd of deception / Prophet of infection / Behold the Xenochrist!". Awesome outro. The Faceless were the ones who convinced me that Deathcore wasn't all shit.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
No contest, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The first hip-hop album I ever liked.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Mastodon. All five of their full-lengths. I also bough the ATHF movie soundtrack just for Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Demons and Wizards. Probably Fiddler On The Green.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
I'm pretty sure that there's a Beatles song for every emotion. I'll go with Julia.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?
Tough one, because The Doors have a lot of amazing tracks, but I'll say SpielenThe Unknown Soldier.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Kalmah is another tough one. Doubtful About It All, maybe?

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, of course. Off the top of my head, SpielenAngel.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Definitely Caught Somewhere in Time. Where Iron Maiden peaked in my opinion.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Ensiferum. Has to be SpielenInto Battle. The guitar solo... rock.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
Explosions in the Sky. Too many to count, mostly involving psychedelics.

    14. What is your favorite song by 37?
Radiohead. Surprisingly, I guess it's SpielenMeeting In The Aisle, a random instrumental B-side off of some EP.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Fuck yeah Necrophagist. SpielenTo Breathe in a Casket always makes me glad that I'm not currently buried alive, I guess.

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live?
Lamb of God - just once, in LA. Not that great a show.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Nirvana. Almost certainly SpielenSmells Like Teen Spirit.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Death? The obvious answer, Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.).

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Nope, never seen Joe Satriani.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45?
Sir Mix-A-Lot? Well, this is embarrassing. The time the Pitt band played SpielenJump on It at halftime at some football game, maybe? (This is one of the artists covered in the above disclaimer, by the way.)

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Metallica. Easily The Call of Ktulu.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
Black Sabbath. Dunno, likely SpielenIron Man.

    24. What is your favorite album by 21?
Not much of a selection as far as Dethklok albums go. I liked Dethalbum II better than the first one.

    25. What is your favorite song by 18?
    Pixies. Hmm... I Bleed.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
Guns N' Roses. First I can remember is SpielenWelcome To The Jungle.

    27. What is your favorite lyric by 3?
Sigh... Children of Bodom. Who knows, it's not like the lyrics to any of their songs are distinguishable anyways. Maybe "Warheart! With no compassion or love / Warheart! Hate your fellow as yourself" from Warheart.

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
Sublime. A lot of great songs, but I'll go with SpielenBoss D.J..

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
Slayer. I think it was SpielenAngel of Death, which I still regard as their best song.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
Wow, this is a tough choice for Led Zeppelin. I have to say Nobody's Fault But Mine, but this is very very close.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
I have no idea what OutKast is doing in this position. Never.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Yep, nearly all of Tenacious D's songs will do the trick. SpielenDouble Team always cracks me up.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
    God Dethroned. Easily Bloody Blasphemy.

    34. What is the worst song by 46?
Where to start with Styx? I used to like SpielenMr. Roboto, but all it does now is raise my urge to kill.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    Elvis. Hound Dog, I guess?

    36. What is your favorite album by 42?
Immortal Technique. Revolutionary Vol. 2 is amazing.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
    Jay-Z, never.

    38. What is your favorite album by 36?
Also a pretty sparse selection for Gorillaz. Between the two, I'll say Demon Days.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
The Who. This is unusual, but the first one I can remember is SpielenChristmas.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
Queen, A Night At The Opera.

  • Boredom ._.

    29. Nov. 2009, 21:43 von mustainefangirl

K, so like, I'm bored, and I have nothing to do rather than wait for my sushi. Therefore, I will just post lyrics to songs that I really liked/ put me thinking/ caught my attention/ etc.

I'll be adding more when I'm bored.

pop tu camisa, pop tu pantalon.
tanto pop, lolly pop, pop corn
(its real , its real) ah ah ah ah ah
Hace falta musica!! Hace falta musica real !

Saba dab da du dab de....... saba dep,,, dep be dep, OH OH ah ah ahhhh
Saba dep oh ah oh ah ah ah oh ....

a mi me da verguenza ajena

Hace falta musica real (its real!)

Saba dab da du dab de....... saba dep,,, dep be dep, OH OH ah ah ahhhh
Saba dep.... oh ah oh ah ah ah oh .... (x2)

Sorry for those who do not speak Spanish, but essentially, it talks about the current state of music. How pop music is now everywhere and peole get their brains washed with all the comercial music there is. The title can be translated to "Why doesn't anybody dare?" Which says that why doesn't anybody dare to do music just for the beauty of it and not for money or fame?

    Connect the Dots - Ayreon

    Ty:
I hugged the wife and drove to work today,
It was only a few miles.
Was in no hurry but the lights were changing up ahead,
So I stepped on the gas.

I checked the Mac,I left it on overnight,
    Downloading all the latest files.
Peer-to-peer, the torrent flows into my lap,
    And I disconnect.

    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, no need to remind us
    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, but won't connect the dots
    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, locked away inside us
    Ty and Arjen:
We are dying for tomorrow, We are living for today

    Ty:
I rushed back home to my family,
I got my son a brand new game.
No need to cook, I picked up fast food on the way,
    And it's fingerlickin' good.

Have you seen little Steve today?
Guess he's still up there in his room.
But if he comes down, tell him
I'll be right here just staring at the tube
    Playing his game.

    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, no need to remind us
    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, but won't connect the dots
    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, locked away inside us
    Ty and Arjen:
We are dying for tomorrow, We are living for today

Don't you think it's rather warm tonight?
Especially for the time of year.
I turn up the air pull the sheets up to my chin,
    And I close my eyes.

    Can't relax, can't fall asleep,
    Should I take another pill?
I turn on the lights, light up a cigarette and smile,
    I've got it made.

    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, no need to remind us
    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, but won't connect the dots
    Ty:
    We all know
    Arjen:
We all know, locked away inside us
    Ty and Arjen:
We are dying for tomorrow, We are living for today

Yup. We all know, there's no need to remind us. The storyline follows a man who doesn't really care overusing energy and downloading illegal torrents, and who also is not worrying about his familly. I'm pretty sure some of us can relate to this, don't deny it, yet, we do not really care, for "We are living for today."

SpielenFor the Greater Good of God - Iron Maiden

Are you a man of peace
    Or man of holy war
    Too many sides to you
    Don't know wich anymore
    So many full of life
    But also filled with pain
    Don't know just how many
    Will live to breathe again

A life that's made to breath
    destruction or defense
    A mind that's vain corruption
    bad or good intent
    A wolf in sheep's clothing
    Or saintly or sinner
    Or some that would believe
    A holy war winner

    They fire off many shots
    and many parting blows
    Their actions beyond a reasoning
    only god would know
And as he lies in heaven
or it could be in hell
    I feel he's somewhere here
    or looking from below
    But I don't know, I don't know

Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is

More pain and misery in the history of mankind
    Sometimes it seems more like
    the blind leading the blind
It brings upon us more of famine, death and war
You know religion has a lot to answer for

Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is

And as they search to find the bodies in the sand
They find it's ashes that are
    scattered across the land
And as their spirits seem to whistle on the wind
A shot is fired somewhere another war begins

And all because of it you'd think
    that we would learn
But still the body count the city fires burn
    Somewhere there's someone dying
    in a foreign land
Meanwhile the world is crying stupidity of man
Tell me why, tell me why

Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is

Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is

For the greater good of God

Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is

Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is

For the greater good of God

He gave his life for us he fell upon the cross
To die for all of those who never mourn his loss
It wasn't meant for us to feel the pain again
Tell me why, tell me why

Even though I'm not a religious person, I found the lyrics to this Maiden song to be telling the truth. People claim themselves to be religious and ... *goes down to eat sushi* I'll write more when I'm done with my sushi.
