  • The 100 Most Essential Albums of the Decade - Volume III

    26. Nov. 2009, 22:55 von DreadfulYgg

This particular list takes a detour from the abundant amount of metal featured so far, as only a few albums here have metal influence in them. I'll come back and add more descriptions later but as of right now I'm feeling too lazy to do so.

    Sunn O)))- Black One

A very blackened atmosphere drenches not only the album cover, but the music as well. Contributions from Wrest and Malefic are top notch, their performances coming across as both terrifying and grosteque. This is a masterpiece of drone/ambient/metal.

    Lifelover- Erotik

It's safe to say that Lifelover are very unique in their respective style, being very experimental with the black metal sound by dabbling with the so-called "depressive rock" genre. Sometimes experimentation can overshadow quality songwriting, but Lifelover are not slouches. Their emotions are genuine and can appeal to metal and non-metal fans alike I think. Although having appreciation for darker music helps too.

    Alcest- Souvenirs d’un autre monde

Le Secret was a phenomenal release in my mind, and it's both a blessing and a curse that that particular sound wasn't further explored. What resulted though was the new Alcest, and Neige presented us a modern gem of shoegaze/ethereal music. Words don't do this album justice, it needs to be wallowed in and experienced for yourself. It's essential to any self-respecting fan of music.

The Angelic Process- Weighing Souls with Sand

This is one of those albums that emotes its genius to you even after the first listen, and each successive listen only increases your appreciation. Some think of them as the metal version of shoegaze, which I don't agree with but I get where they're coming from. This band is much too experimental to pin down and pull in many influences. Just enjoy the beautiful sounds created on this near flawless gem.

    Ulver- Shadows of the Sun

This is a side to Ulver none of us have heard before, and quite frankly they sound stunning. Taking more cues from ambient than anything else, the legendary band has long since created a place for themselves in music history and this album only serves to further cement that status.

    Have a Nice Life- Deathconsciousness

Not many albums impress as much as this one does especially as debuts go. Another band that defies categorization. You can currently download this double album for only $5 here, which is essentially a steal: http://enemieslist.net/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1

    Ice Ages- This Killing Emptiness

Richard Lederer is quite the prolific artist, being the co-mastermind behind the glorious Summoning, and the haunting DVKE, but Ice Ages is a different kind of beast. The atmosphere here is cold, industrial and full of despair. The emotions on this album run deep and it's not one that's easily accessible. Multiple listenings will help to unravel this detailed work, as it's ultimately worth your time and effort.

Bohren & der Club of Gore- Black Earth

A combination that I thought I would never hear, let alone come to love. Bohren marry the unholy combination of dark jazz and doom metal (minus the metal). Ghostly keyboards accentuate the saxophone and drums, creating a sound that is wholly original. There are no vocals here, and they're not needed at all.

Interpol- Turn on the Bright Lights

Taking cues from 80s post-punk, Interpol made a name for themselves in the ever-growing indie rock music scene. This album seriously has no flaws whatsoever. The only flaw I can think of is that it ends. This isn't a happy and upbeat band either. There's a sinister and dark vibe running through the album which makes it that much better.

Explosions in the Sky- The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place

God Is an Astronaut- All is Violent, All is Bright

M83- Before the Dawn Heals Us

    Asobi Seksu- Citrus

Die verbannten Kinder Evas- Dusk and Void Became Alive

The third entry in my essential albums from the great Richard Lederer, this stands as easily the most beautiful and haunting of the three. He has finally found the best female vocalist in the band's history, and her gorgeous soprano vocals are lush and full of emotion. The production here is flawless and the music doesn't sound very synthesized, and comes across as sounding more like a modern classical/ambient release more than ever before.

    The Knife- Silent Shout

    Neun Welten- Vergessene Pfade

    Tenhi- Maaäet

    Crystal Castles- s/t

    Camera Obscura- My Maudlin Career

    Paysage d'Hiver- Einsamkeit

I'll make this short and simple: Best ambient release ever.
