It's been three months since we had everything but The Beast, and I'm still discovering new things about Sparks on every listen. I'm in love.

ive been an imogen superfan a long time, speak for yourself and ellipse are timeless records i'll never get sick of but i find the new record to be rather flat, which seems dumb because there's actually so much going on but it just slips through my fingers, not a single tune i can seem to get into :(

I was a little bit disappointed when I heard Sparks for the first time, but it gets better and better now. It beats Ellipse for sure. I think Imogen went too "experimental" in her music and she'll never release an album like Speak For Yourself, but I'm ok with that. She's still an amazing artist and I'm very curious about her next projects.

It's on UK Spotify. Obsessively bought it on CD as well, since Spotty's 320kb/s quality really doesn't do the production justice.

Does anyone btw know as a fact that Sparks will not become available on Spotify, or is it only an assumption based on it not being there yet?

It really just feels like a collection of songs, rather than a cohesive, flowing work that's meant to be enjoyed as an album [3] I can agree with that, but yes, individually there are some real gems on this release

Such a clever song writer, the ideas behind her songs are original and so thought provoking - unbelievably talented.

Hmm, I'm conflicted. I really like a lot of the songs on Sparks, but as an album it doesn't work as well as I'd hoped. It really just feels like a collection of songs, rather than a cohesive, flowing work that's meant to be enjoyed as an album. Musically, it's nice, but not much stands out as amazing, and lyrically, it's hit-and-miss. Nevertheless, I'm just glad to have some new music from Immi. [2] perfectly worded

"Sparks" does not live up to her previous efforts in terms of my musical taste, however I have appreciation for the intricate creative processes taken, to produce this fine and beautiful listening experience.

  • lightningmonkey

You don't have to like the album, that bit's entirely up to you and your taste. But to say for a moment that Sparks as an album lacked an impressive creative process (as you did) isn't an opinion so much as faulty logic on your part, and I don't feel bad for a moment calling you on it. ;)

    August 2014
  • lightningmonkey

I never said you couldn't post your opinion here, nor that this was the wrong place for it. I disagreed with your assessment for objective reasons, hence my comment about your statement that the sampling in Xizi She Knows was "against your understanding of harmony in music". From there I moved to the subjective, because if your favorite album of hers is I Megaphone, then it's a pretty logical following Sparks wouldn't be to your taste. But keep in mind you also started off by saying Sparks was lame, which from an objective standpoint is not true. Songs made from crowdsourced sounds, music made with pairs of technological gloves, a song that began with the concept "what is the song that has yet to be written?" and you think that these are fallouts of the creative process?

  • ahenathon

@lightningmonkey: I'm afraid You do not understand, or your ego blocks the facts. I have posted my opinion in the right place. You started to analyse me in public and try to convince me to my mistake because it conflicts with your view. That's because You can not accept this as a man. In the network we are anonymous therefore we can leave our ego, phobias and convictions behind the glass. And You know, mocking is also rude and childish. I think I have finished here.

    August 2014
  • lightningmonkey

I hate to break it to you, but things posted to places on the internet that literally anyone can look at don't fall into the category of "private area", haha.

    August 2014
  • ahenathon

@lightningmonkey: Why do people think that the analysis of one's taste is worth the time? In the era of savoir vivre Latin maxim was popularized: "De gustibus non est disputandum". Do not apply to it is rude. Do not go to a private area of my interior. Moreover, music is interesting enough to have to discuss.

  • lightningmonkey

Your comment says a lot more about your preference in music than it does anything about Sparks, heh. "against my understanding of harmony in music" is all you needed to say and that would've completely covered it, seeing as you apparently function under the notion that music must be harmonic to be good music. It's perfectly fine if (going off your listening habits for Immi) you wanted another I Megaphone and didn't get it, but it's been 16 years since I Megaphone, and you shouldn't have expected that to begin with. Sparks is an adventure worth living and growing through, and hopefully you'll come to see that sooner or later.

It had to happen. Sparks, the first lame work from Imogen. Such a shame. I was hoping that singles are fallouts of the creative process, but they are for real. It shocked me to the very depths of my music-loving heart. Good "Minds Without Fear" is above average. Mainly due to the Middle Eastern ingredients. And "The Beast" attained some good groove. "Lifeline" was killed by a grinding, shallow arrangement. But the worst is not even the discotheque-like candy-all-over "Run-Time" but two über-irritating songs. First is "Cycle Song". Can not find the words of my anger when I listening to that cacophony. The second is "Xizi She Knows". Child's samples are against my understanding of harmony in music. At the end we have the most generic thing she wrote. The idea was to be the mood. There is not. Well sums up the whole. This album is not a surprise to me, anyway. "Ellipse" was the announcement. Ended its fuel then and now she operates on fumes. I will be listen to this infrequently.
