Henry Dixon Cowell (* 11. März 1897 in Menlo Park, Kalifornien; 10. Dezember 1965 in Shady, New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Komponist irischer Herkunft.

Bereits früh mit aussereuropäischer Musik in Berührung gekommen, bildete sich Cowell vorwiegend autodidaktisch als Pianist und Komponist aus. Ab den zwanziger Jahren erfolgten jährliche Tourneen durch Nordamerika und nach Europa, wo er 1929 als erster amerikanischer Komponist die Sowjetunion besuchte. Ab 1914 studierte er an der University of California bei Charles Seeger. Ab 1931 vervollkommnete er seine Ausbildung durch ein Studium der vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft in Berlin bei Erich von Hornbostel. Auf einer Studienreise durch Asien unterrichtete er an den Musikakademien von Teheran und Madras. Danach war er Professor an der Columbia University in New York. Zu seinen Schülern gehörten u.a. John Cage und Lou Harrison. Cowell war auch als Publizist und Herausgeber der „New Music Edition“, eine Plattform für neue amerikanische Musik, tätig.

Cowell experimentierte früh mit Clustern und arbeitete mit dem string piano, wobei die Saiten des Klaviers direkt gezupft werden und beeinflusste damit die Entstehung des „Prepared Piano“ von John Cage. Er entwarf das Rhythmikon, das dann 1931 vom russischen Professor Leon Theremin (eigentlich Lev Sergejewitsch Termen, 1896–1993) gebaut wurde und es ermöglichte, automatisch Rhythmen zu erzeugen. Gemeinsam mit Charles Ives, Charles Ruggles, John J. Becker und Wallingford Riegger wird er zur avantgardistischen Komponistengruppe der American Five gezählt.

That you think so just reveals how "white people" still think like they did back in the nineteenth century; just a bunch of colonialist assholes. Cowell's great, and we just need to be a little more contextually forgiving, so to speak. We can be so with him, but you, you're completely out of sync and are a retrograde.

    brendanvox: as basically the founder of the entire field of ethnomusicology I'd say Cowell has done a lot of positive things as far as encouraging people to study and take "brown people music" seriously so whatever ideas you have in your head about the greatest music theorist of the 20th century I suggest you try to correct them.

    The bio's author copied and pasted the first part of Cowell's Wikipedia entry, but edited out the part where it said that the first paragraph is a quote from another composer. I'll re-add it.

    I too discovered Henry Cow through Henry Cowell. The biography on Last.FM is a bit strange, first it tells us Henry Cowell died more than 40 years ago, and next it states that he is a living composer who started his experiments only 30 years ago (that would mean, 10 years after his own death). Any knowledgeable person cares to edit?

    actually I discovered Henry Cow through Henry Cowell... I think I learned about Henry Cowell skimming through Wikipedia. Anyway, both Henries are great. And it seems Henry Cow actually was not referring to Henry Cowell, but I'm not sure.
