Biografie

Graham Parker (* 18. November 1950 in London) ist ein britischer Musiker (Gitarre, Gesang) und Songschreiber.
Obwohl Graham Parker schon als Jugendlicher von einer Karriere als Rockmusiker träumte, musste er sich nach seinem Schulabschluss zunächst mit Jobs als Tankwart, LKW-Fahrer oder in einer Gummischlauchfabrik über Wasser halten. Ab 1970 spielte er in verschiedenen erfolglosen Bands, die von Spanien bis nach Marokko tourten. 1975 kehrte Parker nach London zurück, wo ihm der Chef des Stiff-Labels Dave Robinson die Möglichkeit gab, einige Demos aufzunehmen. Zudem machte Robinson Graham Parker mit der gerade gegründeten Band The Rumour bekannt, die aus Brinsley Schwarz (Gitarre), Martin Belmont (Gitarre), Andrew Bodnar (Bass), Bob Andrews (Keyboards) und Stephen Goulding (Schlagzeug) bestand. Sie sollten fortan für die nächsten fünf Jahre Parkers Begleitband bilden. Graham Parker & The Rumour spielten einen sparsamen und gitarrenbetonten Bluesrock, der sich gleichzeitig stark mit Soul und Rhythm´n Blues vermischte. Besonders Parkers raue Stimme verlieh den Songs ihre ganz besondere Intensität. Diese Musik entfaltete vor allem auf der Bühne ihre besondere Wirkung, so dass Graham Parker & The Rumour sich schnell zu einer der beliebtesten Live-Bands in England entwickelten.
1976 erschien Graham Parkers erste LP Howlin´ Wind, die von Nick Lowe produziert worden war. Das Album bestach sowohl durch die routinierte und doch lockere Spielweise von The Rumour als auch durch Parkers aufwühlende Songs. So rechnete er zum Beispiel in Don´t Ask Me Questions mit der Kirche ab, während er in Back To Schooldays die englische Gesellschaft und ihr Bildungssystem kritisierte.

    Saw him supporting Bob Dylan at Hammersmith Odeon in 1991, he blew Bob off the stage, and I didn't even know any of his songs. Then again, I didn't recognise any of Bobs either, they were indecipherable against the originals and couldn't make out a word he was singing.

    Parker is definitely an under appreciated songwriter and performer. I've seen him a few times--once in the 70s with the Rumour and most recently in a small club solo. Both were excellent high energy performances, that latter with songs from his most recent albums.

    Agree with all of below, a truly underestimated British Artist/singer songwriter,his recent material is still full of energy,jnterest and emotive longing, not to say funny at times, listen to England 's latest clown on "Discovered America" album.

    Too bad that most of the top tracks are from his great, older recordings. His more recent work is also excellent and worth discovering. He has grown up, like Ian Hunter, Dylan and Lou Reed. Clearly an artist that you listen to for the LONG haul.

    He deserved/deserves so much more. Many of his songs are as good as/better than some of Costellos best ones. I'll keep listening to mr Parker forever. Some of his songs mean so much to me. True love.

    Saw him at Brit's pub in Minneapolis last Sunday. I think he is one of the most underrated rock and roll artists of all time. With all due respect to Elvis Costello, he ain't got shit on Graham!
