Gogol BordelloPeace & Love, Borlänge. June 25-27, 2009
Day 1: Me, my girlfriend and friends arrived to a warm and sunny Borlänge at noon on thursday for the Peace & Love festival 2009. Checked in to our hotel, had some McDonalds burgers and then relaxed in the shade under a bush with some wine for a couple of hours.
The first show was Dave Kusworth, he played an acoustic gig in a beer tent. Small crowd, I guess around 10-15 plus around 30-40 people waiting in line for the toilet by the stage. Nice to see him play the Jacobites tunes
Pin Your Heart To Me and Kings And Queens.
After a couple of hours of wine we went to see Thåström... I've seen him a lot of times, first in Imperiet, Peace Love & Pitbulls and solo and have never disappoited. A great mix of new songs with some older Imperiet and Ebba Grön songs. I haven't seen him that energetic in a long time. He was on fire and the manic poses and gestures from the Imperiet era was back. Great show.
After Thåström we had to rush to the biggest stage for Mötley Crüe, childhood heroes... It was very crowded and the large TV monitors was just used to show silly videos and computer graphics. Didn't see much, just listening to Mötley Crüe live is not a very good idea. It gets very obvious Vince Neil is an awful live singer, I love his voice on the albums but it just doesn't work live. Halfway through I found a better spot and enjoyed the rest of the show. In the end it was an ok fun show, if mostly for nostaglic reasons.
Walking back to our hotel we heard people around us saying that Michael Jackson died...
Day 2: In the morning the newspapers confirmed that Michael Jackson actually had died the day before. Spent the day laying in the shade from a tree before a spoken word performance by Henry Rollins. Very entertaining and thought provoking, he talked of pretty much everything, high and low... travels, prejudices, religion, sexism, war/peace and of course Wacko Jacko.
Then it was time to get back to the wine before watching Gogol Bordello. it was crazy, super high energy gypsy punk. One of the absolute highlights of the festival. So cool with accordion, fiddle and girls with giant drums stapped to their chests. A great great live band with an unbelievable energy. I feel sorry for those who missed it.
Next band was Turbonegro, a great band that seldom disappoints. Euroboy is a fantastic guitar player too.
Our last show for the night was Stefan Sundström with Bongo Brains. It looked like Stefan had lots of fun on stage singing in English, he looked like he was acting out his teenage dreams of being Mick Jagger. Fun but I can't say I cared for the music that much.
Day 3: Miss Li started off the day in front of her hometown crowd. The setlist was switched around a lot starting withOh Boy. An unusally short set without surprises but great nontheless.
After the show at Liseberg the month before that lacked the usual energy this show gave back double. 100% energy from both Linda and the band from start to finnish. On a bad day they are still good but on a good day they are probably the best live band in sweden at the moment.
Next up Electric Boys, I loved them when I was around 15 and they just made a come back. Great live band and Conny Bloom is a great frontman. Nice to see them back together. I felt that they didn't have enough great songs to fill the set though. I hope they decide to record a new album.
We had to miss the last Electric Boys songs to get to Hajen (Amanda Bergman) in time. She played on a small, steaming hot stage indoors. An intimate magical show of only 5-6 songs. I had contacted her online asking for more of her songs so after the show I met her and she gave me a very nice CD with handmade sleeve. A very limited edition of 1! Thanks again Amanda!
That's about it... We checked out Faith No More for a while but I got bored pretty quick. Loved them when I was 17. Not so much now.
Great festival though and fantastic weather.
