Biografie

Gary Numan (eigentlich: Gary Anthony James Webb; * 8. März 1958) ist ein britischer Musiker und Pionier des Elektropop.

Seine Karriere begann er Ende der 1970er als Mitglied der Band Tubeway Army, die mit ihrem Song Are ‘Friends’ Electric? 1979 einen Welthit landete. Im gleichen Jahr wurde das Album Replicas Nummer 1 in den britischen Charts, ein weiterer Nr.1 Single-Hit folgte mit Cars. Den Erfolg komplett machten die beiden Nachfolger-Alben The Pleasure Principle (1979) und Telekon (1980), die sich ebenfalls wieder auf Platz 1 der UK-Charts platzierten.

Bis Mitte der 1980er Jahre besonders in England sehr erfolgreich, folgte ein langes künstlerisches Tief, aus dem sich Numan erst 1994 wieder befreien konnte. Das Album Sacrifice stellt einen völligen Neuanfang dar und überzeugt mit seinen düsteren, klaustrophobischen Klanglandschaften.

Numan wird von vielen Bands und Musikern als Vorbild genannt, darunter Dave Grohl (Nirvana), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) oder The Prodigy. Besonders in der Wave- und Gothic-Szene zählte er viele Fans und Anhänger. 1998 veröffentlichte die Crossover-Band Fear Factory eine Neuinterpretation seines Klassikers Cars, bei der Gary Numan sogar als Zweitsänger auftritt. Zu dieser Cover-Version gibt es einen Video-Clip.

Im Jahre 2002 hatte die englische Girlgroup Sugababes einen Hit mit einer Bastard Pop-inspirierten Melange aus Adina Howards Freak Like Me (Text, Melodie) und Tubeway Armys Are ‘Friends’ Electric? (Instrumentalhook).

    @matt_white If you think that "Cars" is the best Gary Numan song of all time you have not listened to his amazing catalog. It sickens me that some folks only listen to cars. Sure Cars in okay but Gary has TONS of albums filled with tracks that take Cars and tosses it into a vat of corrosive acid. Everyone should do themselves a favor and listen to Gary's discography and not only "The Pleasure Principle"

    How can he be so modern? I don't know anyone like him. Numan kicks ass many young bands. He has 25 year old boy voice and plays cool dark music. No matter Numan of 80th or Numan of 2000th - no one has yet surpassed him. I'm not 20, and I listen Gary music!

    I'm thankful machine & soul was such a flop, it was the catalyst for him to evolve and try something new, the releases of sacrifice and exile did not only re-ignite his career it also contributed to his ever growing fan base, as a result he remains one of the only consistent new wave/industrial rock acts touring the UK. I just bloody wish he'd do an exile tour already :P

    @bethymolko: The problem is that a lot of Numan fans (esp. old fans) are not on last.fm. And a lot of these 413,788 listeners know just one song, "Cars".

    then and now, numan continues to infuence the sound of all dark alternative music. pretty sure reznor is now working with fenton, something numan just did a few years back. too many great songs to list, just wish i could keep up w/all the albums he puts out. but..... stormtrooper in drag is just amazing to me.
