20. Tom Jones - Praise & Blame

While I have always liked Tom Jones, I have never really given his post 1980 albums much thought. He has always attached himself to whatever musical movement was hip at the time, from dance, to R&B, to Hip-Hop, with mostly disastrous results. However, when I read that he was going to be recording with Ethan Johns for this album, I felt a glimmer of hope. Like the Joe Cocker album Johns produced a few years back, Praise & Blame is a rootsy affair, with religious undertones. In my view, it is easily the best Tom Jones album released in my lifetime.

Mon 7 Dec – Fleetwood Mac

Wow, wow, wow... Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are just a fantastic rhythm section, and Fleetwood’s drum solo (during "World Turning") was absolutely captivating.

Meanwhile, Stevie Nicks’ voice, beauty and ethereal majesty continue to transfix even now. “Gold Dust Woman” is certainly a highlight in that regard.

But if you’re looking for a guitarist who is both unique and totally in-control of his instrument, you can’t go past Lindsey Buckingham. He knows when to hold back and when to let loose, and those solos (particularly on “I’m So Afraid”) are both raw, powerful and stunning to behold. Unbelievable.
