Epica ist eine 2002 gegründete Symphonic Metal-Band aus den Niederlanden.


Biografie

Epica entstand aus der Band Sahara Dust, die von Mark Jansen (Grunts, Gitarre) zusammen mit Helena Iren Michaelsen (Gesang), Ad Sluijter (Gitarre), Coen Janssen (Keyboard) und Iwan Hendrikx (Schlagzeug) gegründet wurde. Nachdem Helena Iren Michaelsen und Iwan Hendrikx die Band Ende 2002 verließen, stießen Simone Simons (Gesang) und Jeroen Simons (Schlagzeug) hinzu. Als Fans der Band Kamelot benannten sie die Band nach deren Album Epica um. 2006 verließ Jeroen Simons die Band, um sich anderen musikalischen Projekten zu widmen.

Im Juni 2003 veröffentlichten sie ihr erstes Album „The Phantom Agony“, zwei Jahre später das Album „Consign to Oblivion“ sowie das Filmmusik-Album „The Score“, das den von Epica komponierten Soundtrack zum niederländischen Film Joyride bildet. Mit dem 2007 erschienen Album „The Divine Conspiracy“ gelang ihnen der große Durchbruch. Im Mai 2009 wurde „The Classical Conspiracy“ veröffentlicht, welches einen Mitschnitt des Konzerts in Miskolc, Ungarn darstellt, bei welchem die Band von einem Orchester unterstützt wurde. Im Oktober 2009 erschien das aktuelle Studioalbum „Design Your Universe“.


Stil

Epica verbinden in ihrer klassisch geprägten Musik Symphonic Metal mit Elementen des Gothic Metal. Auf ihren Alben werden zur realistischen Ergänzung der Samples neben einem kleinen Orchester auch ein kleiner Chor eingesetzt. Der Mezzosopran der Sängerin Simone Simons wird teilweise durch männliches Grunting unterstützt.

    V yes, but in the REAL setup and the sound of choir and orchestra were more upfront in Retrospect which I found impressive, actually really impressive. For me, songs from DYU were played the best IMO in Retrospect. Like you, I also wish Our Destiny were played, I like the choir parts there.

    rustandsoul: But all the songs there were played with orchestra and choir (as they were composed). And even being Requiem For The Indifferent not as good as the previous one, for me Requiem's songs are the best played live. Not only in Retrospect, when I saw them live, I felt the same.

    @Oscar_Morten: Storm the sorrow was very haunting and powerful when it was played with orchestra and choir. Otherwise I just find it just okay. For me the highlights were Twin Flames which brings tears to my eyes, as well as when they played the orchestral medley until Retrospect track. But, the live performance of Design Your Universe really brings chills to my nerves. I also cried during the last seconds of the song. It was truly epic.

    Monopoly On Truth, Serenade Of Self-destruction and Storm The Sorrow live are freaking amazing, when I saw them live, these songs left me speachless (Serenare the most) and now that I'm listening the Retrospect full audio, I'm still thinking these songs are the best live.

    Deter The Tyrant should never leave the setlist : s Storm The Sorrow should also stay and well yeah obviously Serenade of Self-Destruction. That would be enough RFTI imo :D
